Which would be awful. If you want the experiences at games outside of MLS to be dull and empty, that's the way to go. How many people are "fans" of AAA baseball teams? NBDL teams? I've never heard anyone on Indianapolis say they are Indians fans. Sure the games are fun, people go and kinda watch the games, some get season tickets, but it's not like anyone cares about the standings too much. No thanks.

Im a proud Buffalo Bisons fans, and don't care about the Indians or mets, and barely care about the jays.

That's cool. I didn't mean to imply that there were zero people that were fans exclusively of minor league baseball teams. But you have to admit you're minority.

I bet it is more common than you think.

Just as an anecdotal story, very few Lansing Lugnuts fans are actually Blue Jays fans. I would say most minor league clubs that have a parent club in a different market are not supporters of the major league club.

While it's not quite happening for NYCFC just yet, Orlando SC is unbeaten in 5 and third in the east. Plus Kaka has seven goals, including a header off a missed PK today.

If you're looking for an MLS team to get in on the ground floor with, you could do much worse with them.

You're proving my point. People rarely call their local minor league baseball team their "favorite" team. I live in the city with no MLB presence, with the highest (maybe 2nd highest) attendance in minor league baseball and still everyone describes themselves as Reds, Cubs, Cardinals, or other MLB teams before they say the Indianapolis Indians. You'd probably find more people say the Cleveland Indians are their favorite team here before the local Indians.

Doesn't mean going to the games isn't fun, nor am I ripping on MILB baseball. It's been that way for 150+ years so we accept it and it works. But the results are secondary to 80% in attendance. Those numbers of those that care get reversed easily at Eleven games.

Same for San Antonio Missions fans. Most are actually Dodgers fans though the Dodgers haven't stocked the team for years. Even with Houston and Texas up the road most folks remember the Dodgers more fondly here. Mainly because players like Mike Piazza played here in the early 1980's.

I think your point is pretty solid. I've never gone to a minor league baseball game caring about the outcome. The only minor league teams I care about are those affiliated with my favorite MLB team, the Twins. I live just a couple miles from Arizona affiliate Hillsboro Hops. Really enjoy their games, but don't particularly care if they win or lose.

I'd disagree. I think people care about as much about MiLB games as they do any of the lower level soccer leagues. And they're no more dull or empty of meaning than minor league soccer is now (affiliated or otherwise). I mean most teams that you see fire for in minor league soccer get that in part from a hope they'll move up to the upper levels some day. But eventually MLS will fill out and the lower levels are going to have to adjust into a permanent minor league roll. That will be much easier to sustain if they have some form of support from above rather than detached existence as permanent lower level teams.

I don't mind having lower division teams with MLS affiliations (like Orlando did with SKC when they were in the USL) but I don't think lower division teams that aim to field actual teams should be mixed with "2" sides.

That's the thing, I think we're heading toward all teams being "2" teams. Be it direct owned 2 teams or affiliated teams, not unlike how you have a similar mix in MiLB. I mean D3 USL is already there (and it may soon be D2 USL). NASL seems to be the odd duck out right now with it's independent teams, but I can see them eventually falling into the same model once they give up the ghost on their dead dream of competing with MLS (or USSF finally makes them adhere to D2 standards which they so far fail to do).

I don't see why there couldn't be MLS 1, MLS 2 and MLS 3, with the leagues breaking down as MLS, NASL and USL. Surely there are some existing USL franchises that could move up to a second tier.

It's not that easy, of course, but it seems like brokering a deal would be better for NASL's legacy (such that it is) rather than waiting around to go extinct.

I think the NASL can be a good D2 league without having a bunch of affiliates and reserve squads.

Peterson also stated at halftime of the Jacksonville-Cosmos game that they would be announcing more teams during the fall season so a West Coast team might pop up then.

I hope they aren't trying to match the USL team for team. Quality needs to be the rule, not quantity.

I think they are looking for replacements for Minnesota (leaving for MLS), Atlanta (probably gone), and San Antonio (good chance they might leave for MLS eventually).

Tonight I'm going to see the Earthquakes host Sacramento Republic FC at the new barn in San Jose. Pretty excited to see the new spot!

I hope they have a decent lounge area too, because I'm sure im gonna miss at least the first part of the first half watching the Warriors game.

Anyone been to the new stadium yet?
