Even if that was true in 2004, that was eight years ago. Might not still be true. MLB had only recently taken over the individual team websites a couple years before, after abolishing the independent league presidents before that, and was consolidating centralized control over all of baseball.

i just checked the canadian trademark office and the nhl still owns the name quebec nordiques. if something would to happen with selling the team, that would be one of the first things to check before the coyotes move.

The NHL didn't sell the rights to the Jets to TNSE until after they purchased and moved the Thrashers.

TNSE didn't want the rights to "Jets" at first, though.

It's still true. MLB hasn't taken control of any of the team histories like the NHL apparently has done.

True, but even if they did end up going with the Manitoba Moose identity they likely would have wanted the Jets name anyway, for throwback nights and the like.

I still don't think we'll see a transfer of the Nordiques intellectual property until after it's announced that Quebecor has bought a team.

The hearing was held today, this is what the judge said today... according to the HFBoards

Judge Fink: I am inclined to rule that section of ordinance which mentions emergency clause be invalidated.

Strike 1?

From the AP via Washington Post

"Residents now have 30 days from the June 8 Glendale City Council vote to gather signatures for a public referendum on the agreement.

Language within the ordinance called for it to be an emergency measure, which would have allowed it to go into effect the day of the vote. But since an emergency measure must be approved by five of the seven council members and the vote was 4-2 ? one member was absent ? that portion of the ordinance was nullified."

Could it be that the missing councilmember being homesick backfired on them? Granted, said missing councilmember was opposed IIRC, but you can never tell with Glendale AZ.

Norma Alvarez had been against any more money. She was hospitalized and has had complication a broken leg after a slip n fall last October. That said, they had a quorum to take the vote, but they still needed five for an emergency vote. Mayor Scruggs and Lieberman were the "no" votes on the lease.

Whitney speaks about the ownership issue

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2012/05/25/ray_whitney_coyotes_need_stable_ownership/?utm_source=Hockey%20lineup%20RSS-Images&utm_medium=feed&utm_content=Whitney%3A%20Coyotes%20a%20%22doormat%20in%20the%20league%22

Whitney believes the Coyotes were at a competitive disadvantage in the Stanley Cup playoffs in comparison to other teams because the club does not have an ownership group to defend them.

"I don't want to go through another year and be a doormat in the league where you don't have ownership and people to stand up for you," Whitney told Sarah McLellan of Azcentral.com.

The Coyotes were frustrated with the officiating in their series loss to the Los Angeles Kings and the Western Conference final.

"It's tough for our management. It's tough for our coaching staff, and eventually it runs down. It's tough for players," Whitney said. "I didn't feel like we had the same competitive edge as everyone else.

"Who are we going to complain to? Our owner gave the trophy out to the other team."

Never heard from the player's perspective but who could blame him?

STFU

Your team's gameplan is largely predicated on unpenalized obstruction and a goaltender who dives like Greg Louganis; you have no right whatsoever to bitch about the refs. "A doormat in the league" doesn't finish 4th, 6th, and 3rd under league ownership. And the idea that "no one stands up for you" is silly considering that if the league didn't "stand up for them" in the first place, they'd have moved to Quebec this summer, Winnipeg last summer, or Hamilton THREE FREAKING YEARS AGO. Just retire already, Whitney, you worthless compiler.

Sure maybe Brown got away with the knee in Game 5, but that was all negated with the inexplicable no call on Raffi in the Hawks series.

Well, someone else would actually have to nominate it. I'm hardly in any position to do so. :P

Was in Pro Hockey Life today with WildWing64 and some others, and we noticed that EVERY SINGLE COYOTES JERSEY WAS GONE. Their "wall of jerseys" featured one lonely third jersey, and the shelves featured none.

Asked the associate, and they "are ordering some more because they sold out"

Pro Hockey Life never sells out of ANYTHING.

To top it all off, on the way out the door, one of us was looking at t-shirts, and noticed that there were no Coyotes shirts on the shelf, but they had been replaced by Quebec with the Coyotes shelf sticker still in place. The row read NYR-OTT-PHI-QUE-PIT-STL

Jesus, Zeus and Buddha watched from the sidelines and ate cotton candy.

Well the amount of signatures GWI would need by July 8th was confirmed today. 1862. That's it. And they tie this up until at least November and that assumes the measure doesn't pass. By July 8th we should know one way or the other if Jamison is still on board.

This is ridiculous. What the :censored:? The judge struck down the measure. Load the clowns back into the car and send the damn team to Quebec. They shouldn't get another two weeks to see if they can get enough idiots to sign a petition to get this on the ballot in November. Just end this.

Actually, the judge struck down their use of the state's "emergency clause" which made the deal immediately effective. He didn't strike down the entire deal.

Now the deal can go before the voters, if opponents can get 1800 signatures. And that could kill it altogether, but would at the very least stall it for months. Which would, I suspect, guarantee another year of failure in the desert.
