Outlaws has way more of a Western feel to it than Knights or Cougars.  That's kind of undeniable.

So? I don't see why that's so much better or so important. If anything, I think Outlaws is probably more used, has more awful clipart logos associated with it, and I don't think a "Western" theme is necessary.

just like everyone insisted that the Dallas Stars should feature some sort of cowboy/sheriff look, and look how well it's worked out without it. Avoiding the obvious is important as well.

I'll respect any opinion that you can defend.

Are there a lot of Big 4 teams with Outlaws as a name?  It it overly used in college or minor league baseball or hockey?

No?

The NHL is a league where the teams names are primarily local.  5 of 6 Canadian teams have names directly tied to Canada.

Smart is believing half of what you hear. Genius is knowing which half.

I would say 3 of 7, but to each their own.

Canucks, Canadiens, Oilers, Jets for sure (I forgot the Jets in my original count). .  Senators aren't uniquely Canadian but it fits in the capital city.  Maple Leafs were named for a Canadian regiment and tie in to the country's flag.  Flames are the only team (IMO anyway) whose name isn't a direct homage to Canada.

But the US teams are highly local as well.  Avalanche, Wild, Blues, Panthers, Islanders, Hurricanes, Coyotes, Lightning, Capitals, Flyers, Blue Jackets, Devils, Predators, Sharks.  Historically...Flames, Rockies, Whalers, Nordiques, Seals... et al, et al

Outlaws is in every create-a-team selection and (as mentioned) has ridiculous amounts of clip-arty logos already available (mostly the same profile of a guy with a bandana covering his mouf.)

Could the same be said about Knights?  Yeah... probably.  I still think it's a more professional-sounding name than Outlaws, and allows designers much more freedom to come up with something unique.

I could live with Knights (not Black Knights), I mean at least you can argue a play on words kinda of thing with Las Vegas (K)nights. Even though Aces, Scorpions and Outlaws are all better. (Gamblers would be great but it seems they want to stay away from that). Hell, I'd even take Flamingos, with a black and pink color scheme. If we have the Pelicans we can have the Flamingos.

It's a shame the color scheme will almost undoubtedly be black and tan (which they will call gold but will look tan like PIT did) with maybe a splash of silver. Just as the Pens go back to yellow and the Ducks at least added more orange to the drabness we'll get another drab team.

I hope the logos are at least cool and it's not just like a knight helmet with swords behind it in a circle that says "Las Vegas Knights Hockey Club."

MEANS, I know that you can't divulge any details. I get that.

But this is exciting stuff for us fans of sports logos.

This is the creation of a new entity right from scratch!

What's the process?

Do you focus on name only at first? Then colours, Logos, etc.?

Are the results of any of the many polls out there a factor at all?

Is the colour scheme of gold, silver/grey, and black, still set in stone?

How many people working on this?

Is there an anticipated release date for the new identity? etc...

You're describing the NHL of ten years ago.

Now? The Oilers, Penguins, and Islanders have all turned from their drab late 90s/early 2000s dark colour schemes in favour of bright, vibrant older looks.

Sure, a few teams have lightened their overall look, but the league, as a whole, is still significantly darker. Since the beginning of modern expansion (sharks to now):

Anaheim moved to black primaries

Buffalo tooled with a few looks, but settled on a similar look to their classic one, replacing royal blue with navy

Calgary moved from red and yellow to a darker red and black

Colorado darkened their maroon/burgundy

New Jersey abandoned green for black

The Blues minimized yellow and ipped their use of black.

Sure Dallas is lighter than a couple of years ago, but it's still significantly darker than their Minnesota days.

I said there is little bright color in the league, and it's true. A few teams doesn't negate the fact that the vast majority of teams aren't using much outside of black, dark tones of blue, red and green, then relying mostly on white to fill in areas not covered by those colors.

Maybe it's me, but I feel like, of the big 4 leagues, the NHL has the darkest overall use of colors.

I would love to see Vegas used as an opportunity to do something visually fun, without going overboard.

Not sure if you're aware, but a cougar is another name for a panther (one primarily used out west). Cougars, panthers and pumas are all the same species on North America.

True, but there midwest Cougar teams like Kane County (MiLB) and Houston (NCAA).

According to the Las Vegas RJ, the team owns copyrights, trademarks and domain names to several different names, most notably Silver Knights.

At this point, I am convinced come hell or high water, Bill Foley is going to somehow encorporate Knights into his team name.

Oilers isn't really a direct homage. Yes it refers to the Alberta oil fields, but I mean, you could use the name Oilers in half of North America. Same with Jets.

You can't have a team named the Dallas Canadiens, Maples Leafs or Canucks. You could have the Dallas Flames, Jets, Oilers or Senators (would be weird, but what the heck)

Damn...and here I thought Black Knights was unnecessarily cumbersome. I realize Nevada is the "Silver State", but just call them the Knights already and have silver as the primary color.

Yes, Knights is a generic name, but very rarely is a name improved by including an adjective in front of it. As proof see all the Ice Noun or Red Noun teams out there.

I did this one up last night for fun...

I was thinking of the 'animal' angle, that you guys have been discussing.

Nevada is full of "Black-Tailed Jack Rabbits" or "BlackJacks" for short.

Yeah, I know...it's a gaming phrase so it's a non-starter.

This would probably be better for an AHL team.

"BlackJacks"...

-rabbit-ear fan headgear

-"Puck-Bunny" T-shirts

-fun colour scheme

-"Wascally Wabbit" fan club

-Big Inflatable Carrot Thunderwhackers...etc. etc.

-"BlackJacks"...

Gotta go Outlaws, has a nice intimidation factor to it and speaks the region without directly pointing at the casinos and mobsters, or wild west cowboys wherever you want to take it. But Las Vegas Outlaws has a real nice ring to it, much better than Las Vegas Knights although I do love the dual meaning it could have.

Both Oilers and Jets are based on local activities in both of the Canadian towns, so yes the team names are a homage to the locals.

As far your latter paragraph...you could have the Calgary Cowboys in football, too, but everyone knows it ties in pretty nicely to Dallas.
