MLB 2022 Uniform/Logo Changes

Of all the team names that occur twice across the major sports leagues, I would say offhand that only the New York Rangers and St. Louis Cardinals have greater brand equity than the same-named team in the respective more popular league.  With the Cardinals, I mean, NFL and MLB are at least close, but MLB and the NHL, that's saying something.

I guess what I'm trying to say is I never liked this identity at all. I don't like that there had already been a Rangers team in a major market for 50ish years. I don't like claiming the entirety of Texas when the Astros were already there and Dallas-Ft. Worth is sprawling enough that no one should worry about hurt feelings in the suburbs. If you even wanted to argue that it's a more offensive name in and of itself than "Cleveland Indians" given what the inspiration for their name has gotten up to, you could probably make a halfway persuasive case. Too late to do a wholesale rebrand of a team that's been here for 50 years but what a botch.

Dallas-Fort Worth Abels, the play-by-play would be like the time the guy had a stroke and said "the runner is on fifth as part of a botched robbery" but for 1500+ innings a year

The name was taken from a racist police organization, the nickname is already used by a much more famous and long-lasting hockey team, and I don't think they can get a good visual identity out of it.

Are there any other MLB team names that people find problematic?

Really? I haven't heard this one

To a certain extent. Yank is a derogatory term the British mostly uses to make fun of Americans but hardly anyone here even knows this so it doesn't work.

Well now it’s what southerners call northerners in a derogatory way.

Yeah but that’s different because, historically, the Yankees smash.

Risking this going down a bad path, it’s like the whole calling someone a cracker thing. Hard to really land a blow on somebody who’s always been on top.

I could see people making a case that these names are problematic.

If you're going to include the Angels then I'd argue you could add "Padres" to this list since their name is inspired by a religious order and some people might find that "icky."

Note: I don't personally feel the Padres should ever change their name nor am I aware of anyone currently demanding they do. But this might be where the road we're heading down leads us in a few decades (if not sooner).
