Washington Commanders to debut new NFL identity

I’m actually pretty disappointed it’s not Redwolves. I thought that name had a lot of promise. Honestly, Washington Football Team is probably better than anything else they have come up with at this point. They’ve developed an identity around that IMO. The logo package is pretty weak but the name is unique and plays on the long history of the team. This new look appears to have some trendy stuff going on. I would have leaned into the longevity and history of the franchise instead of what appears to be a pretty big departure visually

The new WFT logo is visible on the football behind the helmet at the 5:53 mark.

I don't think the team would be that inept at blowing a reveal in their video. It's the current logo. Taylor Heinicke stole the show in Washington's loss to Tom Brady's Buccaneers - Sports Illustrated

Idk that just seems like the temporary roundel logo they’ve been using for two seasons now

If they go with a military theme it could be a roundel logo akin to a challenge coin which is a really big thing in military circles.

Can't figure out how to post a tweet that's part of a thread without posting the parent, so sorry for the redundant post.  But the second one links to an article about how any variation of Wolves won't be the name.

EDIT: They specifically say Wolves or a variation like Redwolves (one name) but they didn't say anything about a modified name like Red Wolves (two words).  It would be stupid of them to say it's not Redwolves but then go with Red Wolves, but they kinda left the door open (Though based on the stars on the jersey, I think it's Commanders.)

Legal issues, i.e. the lawyers couldn't reach a trademark settlement amount that Snyder would pay.    The DC flag has 3 stars, but it does also lend to a military name, which could also be Red Tails.   I also think it'll be Commanders.

From what I'm seeing, this has all the makings of "piecemeal for piecemeal's sake". That said, until we know for sure how involved the Nike creative team was in this, I'll hold judgment on this.

If that 17 is indicative of the rest of the number font, then they already deserve props for not going the unnecessary serifs/opposing corners/hackneyed chopjob route, a la Tennessee. (And speaking of Tennessee, yeah, um, about those three stars on the inside collar there, Washington...yyyeeeeaahh, about that 🤔) I too see some kind of patterned gradient fade on both the white jerseys and the numbers on those jerseys, which leaves me really curious. (I hope they're not trying to pull a SF Giants City Connect jibe with those road jerseys.) And, again, with the road jersey numbers being outlined in black...why? (But then why add black period to an already good colorway? Sales, I guess.) I want to see the pants and socks, which I guess we all will when WTF breaks the internet--and these forums--on 2/2/22. (You think they planned that day on purpose??)

I've seen some of those concept logos before--I know the.guy who made one of them, the one that looked like a W in a shield shape. The Redtsils concept logo in the shield shape was an interesting take; it looked more like a soccer crest than a football logo, but I don't necessarily see that as a bad thing. But, those helmets...no way around a facepalm on that one. And "one of...the main helmets?" How many helmets they got...three? Sixteen? Guess we'll see.

And as for the potentially leaked name...I that's it, it doesn't surprise me in the slightest. That's about the only military-themed nickname that could work with the three stars and actually be half-accurate...the three-star rank is Vice Admiral, and being that the Navy Yard is right there in DC, I'm sure that'd have been their inspiration.  If that's indeed it, I wouldn't mind it; in fact, I already kinda like the idea of it.

According to comments, it was registered in 2008 and as of now doesn't seem to have any affiliation with the NFL team...

I’m a little suspicious about it being Admirals because of the reasoning they gave for not using “Red Wolves”; if a name like “Red Wolves” gave them that much legal trouble, I’d have to imagine “Admirals” would too (Milwaukee, Norfolk, etc). I could be totally wrong and they actually did make that work, but who knows.

If it IS Admirals, then I think it’s okay. Not spectacular, but it’s good and safe.

As for the comment about the helmets, I’ll reserve judgement until we see what that possible extra helmet actually is, and the uniform it supposedly goes with. It could always be a re-worked fauxback of sorts - I wouldn’t be all that surprised if they tried something like that.

I think the logo is actually in this tweet, just zoomed in really far.

I think its the current W, just in outline form. the top right serif looks to be the same. But you could be right, and the new logo features that W
