Like I feared, the game is a little muddy when both teams share a color scheme of black, golden yellow, and greyish cream.

Individually the Bruins look good, but I don’t like the yellow lids and numbers on a cream base for the Pens at all. Just not a nice harmony of colors.

This is exactly why I really wanted and hoped Pittsburgh would have dipped back into double-blue. This game could really use some color contrast. And also, I think black/gold vs powder/navy would have been stunning outdoors.

Boston looks amazing on thier own though, so the matchup is at least half great.

The yellow looked a bit nicer later in the game when the floodlights came on. Maybe it would have worked on a bright sunny day, but it was pretty overcast, which didn't help the drearyness.

Wonder if the Penguins just wrung all they could from the double-blue throwback look with the Winter Classics and regular throwback from 08-14 or so and it doesn't sell the merch anymore.

This game is the only situation I would have been okay with that. Otherwise, it can stay in the 60's and 70's where it belongs. The novelty wore off quickly in 2008, and while I can't exactly give a good reason why, I hated having a blue third uniform all the way up until they finally nixed it. I can't speak for all Pens fans, but by the time they did stop wearing it, you already weren't seeing much of it around the arena.

This is all pretty funny when you consider the Bruins protested the Pens going to black and gold back in 1980, but because Pittsburgh had an NHL team that wore black and gold before the Bruins did - the Pirates - the NHL didn't stop them.

That probably has something to do with the fact that the Pirates had relocated to Philly and folded well before Boston switched to black and gold, so there was no franchise in Pittsburgh to complain about the Bruins going from brown and gold to black and gold.

Not to mention the Pirates had already changed colors twice by the time they relocated; once to blue and gold, another to black and orange.

Well, there’s the Metropolitans uniform opportunity. No wonder Seattle didn’t go that route for reverse retro this year.

The particular matchup seems a little forced honestly, I’d have rather seen Vancouver against Seattle for this game. That being said, it does make me really curious to see what the Knights do. They’ve honestly done really well with thier two RR fauxbacks, so I’m intrigued how they may take on something more old-time hockey inspired (assuming they go the usual WC route and don’t do something more modern).

It seems a bit desperate that the Kraken are hosting an outdoor game and will play dress up wearing the uniforms of a team that locals have no real affinity for.

?? There are already people wearing Metropolitan sweaters around town. It’s kind of a hipster item IMO, they will definitely sell the sweaters.

I’m not sure what’s desperate about giving a hockey-crazed town a Winter Classic. T-Mobile is an ideal venue given the roof and all the amenities there.

Wouldn't doubt Seattle as a market at this point, but the NHL has been pretty clear about positioning the Winter Classic with the legacy teams, pond hockey, snowy cities, etc. It's right there in the name. It's why Washington and Dallas felt a little odd too, and now it's an even more awkward fit with literally the two newest franchises considering how the game has almost always been O6 or close to it.

If this was a "Stadium Series" game I don't think nearly as many people would bat an eye.

Trying to figure out a Vegas uniform for this seems like a challenge -- lots of fun design inspiration in vintage Las Vegas design culture, but does any of that translate to an old-timey hockey sweater with a felt crest?

They tipped their hand in the Athletic article about the glow-in-the-dark jerseys.

Quote

“You try not to design a vintage-looking jersey for a team’s third, because that’s what the Winter Classic is going to look like,” Merrill explained. “You try not to design a super futuristic-looking jersey, because that’s what the Stadium Series jersey is going to look like. We try not to step on those, or play those cards, until it’s time.

“There are lots of Western-themed casinos, but that really feels like a Winter Classic, so we’re going to wait on that one. There are also a lot of more modern-day casinos like the Venetian or the Cosmopolitan. That’s going to be their Stadium Series jersey someday. Whereas the essential, Vegas-y-ness of Stardust made us say, ‘That’s the Reverse Retro casino.’”

I would bet on Vegas Vic being featured prominently.

Getting into the sporting act, too. Certainly one way to warm up.

As an aside -- what are these panels of faux-snow they have covering the entire field for these things? It's been 50 degrees in Boston for a week and I'm not sure we've had any snow at all this season.

When I headed back east in mid-December it was snowing in Boston, and cold as F too. A great reminder why I don't live there anymore.

I didn't mind the faux snow, it fit's the aesthetic far more than nice green grass surrounding an ice sheet.

I'm fine with it. Let the event evolve.  I had no interest in tuning in this year to see another Winter Classic featuring Boston and Pittsburgh in a venue that already hosted the event. There's only so many times I can watch Detroit or Chicago or the Rangers on New Year's Day before it begins to feel stale.

It makes sense to showcase the markets that are exhibiting peak success, even if they're brand new. It shows how the game is expanding and rewards those markets for their success.

Agree about the event becoming stale if it's rotated around the same four or five teams...but the Bruins are having amazing success this year. I don't think the league or TNT were upset the best team in the league was hosting the game.

I think that Fenway is a perfect Winter Classic venue that won't get old for me, but otherwise yeah -- I don't mind rewarding new markets, I'm just not super convinced that fauxback is the best aesthetic for either of these teams or the ballpark, but now that expectation is set. Maybe we can do "pond hockey in the Cascades" or something.

This will be the first Classic at a stadium with a retractable roof, right? If the weather is heavy rain...do they close the roof?

(nm - roof will be partially closed if it rains, per Seattle Times article)
