Pro Bowl Dead.

This is for the best. It's been two hand touch with pads for years, just get rid of the helmets and pads and go to flag  football. I'd probably make it part of Super Bowl week. I also think it's interesting that the NFL is trying to get flag football into the Olympics in 2028, but since the format works better for a 2 week tournament it makes sense. I figure they can use UCLA/USC and other LA soccer fields for those games.

Of the four major US sports leagues, I feel like the Pro Bowl was the one most people wanted to be changed, as the sports doesn't it lend itself well to a game of varying levels of effort and injury scares.

However, I feel like this is about to be a conversation on the medias about how every league needs to do this. The NHL and NBA have made a few changes in the past ten years or so, while baseball hasn't done much with it. And I think that's fine. I haven't really watched the Pro Bowl in about ten years, so I don't really have thoughts on it even though we're all supposed to have thoughts on everything all the time. But Ihaven't been more plugged into the NHL/NBA/MLB ASGs than I am right now. I really enjoy them. I don't need to them to be cutthroat Pete Rose-style (insert any other garbage person here) events. Most people who chime in on how each sport needs to change their ASG format aren't going to watch them anyway.

That's what they're going to do along with the usual skills competition stuff. I wonder how Robert Edwards feels this morning.

This is like 30 years overdue, but also sort of surprising because the game always got better ratings than the World Series and NBA Finals. I feel like the players kind of forced their hand because last year's game was such a farce, even by pro bowl standards, that they felt like they couldn't go through the charade of dressing the players in pads any longer.

I wish they'd made this decision years ago before Tyler Eifert was injured in a pro bowl and required offseason surgery.

OK…so the Mike Evans suspension was probably appropriate…but did I just hear correctly that Jon Runyon, Sr., father of Packer player Jon Runyon, Jr., upheld the suspension?

Good look.

Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse."

I don’t know about the Mike Evans situation, but it’s ironic because John Runyan Sr. was one of the dirtier players when he played, and was flagged for a million personal fouls (or should have been). Along with McNabb, his signing was really the catalyst for the Eagles 5-11 to 11-5 turnaround in 2000, but by his own admission he played past the whistle and I think he even said that he hated the discipline department.

The NFL never fails to amaze me in the "Needlessly Complicated and Pointless Rules You Didn't Know Existed" department.

They said this wasn't a TD on the field and then upheld the call after a challenge. How's this not a touchdown?

Two feet clearly in with control of the ball, right? Nobody could dispute that. Not a TD because of one of the weirder and dumber rules in the sport.

WHY IS THAT THE RULE? Why is there a higher standard for if your feet are pointing up as opposed to down? My whole life I've seen catches stand because guys got two toes in and now you need both heels in too if your feet are pointing into the field? I feel like I'm being Mandela Effected here.

The Bengals scored a TD on the next play so it didn't end up mattering (save for Higgins getting the old slippery salmon there from the Jets' DB and the Bengals losing their first half challenge and Timeout), but still. WHY IS THAT THE RULE?????

This actually happened last year to the Titans. Maybe now that I've seen it happen twice in my life they'll consider changing it. Probably not since they were regular season games involving Tennessee and Cincinnati.

They basically did their best impression of the Oakland A’s that they possibly could’ve in the way they tried to intentionally make it worse over the years. The Pro Bowl was just fine the way it was after the Super Bowl in Hawaii, but they insisted they were going to “make it better”, when everyone kinda knew they were just trying to intentionally tank any and all interest in it.

I dunno. I’m probably the only one out there that’s sad about this. I’ve been to seven Pro Bowls with my dad and they were all fun (well, the last one we went to in AZ was garbage, but that was post rule changes). It was a pretty fun little event that the NFL just insisted they were going to completely ruin, so, whatever I guess 🤷‍♂️

Why? @Sport just said that the game was getting better ratings than the NBA Finals, so I don't see any reason for the NFL to trash a money-maker.

Goodell made it pretty clear from the minute he took over that he didn’t think the Pro Bowl was a valuable tool, so they tried to “fix” it. So basically either they’re so incompetent that they just completely ruined an event that was fine by any definition in the misguided attempt to “make it better”. Or it’s more of what I expect it to be, in that they disliked it, but instead of doing the unpopular thing of just scrapping it, they just set it up in a way that was meant to fail. Totally bad faith setup from the jump in the attempt to “organically” kill it off over the course of about a decade.

He's going to have to show his work for that one.  I didn't try very hard, but my initial searching doesn't support his claim.

2022 Pro Bowl: 6.69 million viewers across ABC, ESPN and DisneyXD, the smallest audience for the game in 16 years

2022 NBA Finals average: 12.4 million.  Game 6: 13.99 million.

Honestly, I'm shocked that the Pro Bowl was even half of that number.  Regardless, it's not like there's massive bidding wars over it whenever the CBA comes up like there is for the Super Bowl and other major events.  I think the networks will survive.
