It's "blackletter", y'all...Old English is just one variant of it. And me personally, I've long felt if any team were to try the blackletter-inspired route, it should be the Lions—but alas.

Nah Carolina’s current look is a few minor tweaks away from being perfect. It’s only “stale” for the same reason the Titans old look got “stale”. They started using wacky combinations that made little to no sense and didn’t fit together properly. Guarantee you we’re going to get some crap similar to the Titans but with dumb random cat scratches on the shoulders instead of a sword blade.

Cardinals I’m interested in, but they have the potential to really easily :censored: that whole thing up. The only two things I’d like to see with them is either go WAY traditional and simplified (think a red and white version of the Raiders) to match how old the franchise is, or go in the other direction and go full desert Cardinal to match the area. Replace white with sand or whatever. I’m sure we’re going to get something that straddles those two, tries to keep everything and please everyone, and therefore won’t please anyone.

Yup, you know the ol' trope: "respect the past, embrace the future" or some variant of such...

I think they’d use the 2022 alt helmet, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the new set was close to that. I’m guessing most of the silver is gone.

Silver with the Carolina Blue is kinda what makes their brand so unique.  Plenty of teams in sports use Columbia Blue/Carolina Blue/Light Blue whatever you wanna call it, but I can't think of another team that uses it with Black & Silver.  If they ditch Silver, it'll be a tragedy.

I know, it's not technically Carolina Blue, it's "Panther Blue" or Electric Cyan or whatever, but you get my point.

Agree on Carolina.  They have what I call a "new classic" and the fact that they've not changed it once in almost 30 years, except for minor updates, while Jacksonville, who they entered the league with, has changed their look more times than I can count, just makes me sad to know they're going to finally ditch the look.  I hope it's just a tasteful update; I truly hope they keep the Silver helmet and standard block number font (with no team name), but I'm sure the font will be the first thing they look to update below a fire new team name logo on the front chest.

The Cardinals have such a terrible color palette when you consider it's basically Cardinal Red & White.  I'd be happy to see them expand their brand with a Sand color as it actually makes sense and wouldn't be a forced add.  Highlights of Navy & Yellow-Gold from the state flag on a Cardinal & Sand uniform could result in something pretty unique to pro sports, and that's the kind of revamp the Cardinals desperately need to gain some brand relevancy for the first time...ever.  I would be hard-pressed to name a team in the NFL with less brand power.

🤔 ... I don't hate it.

With the NFL allowing 2 official helmets next season, would y'all actually want to see this design? (this was originally posted a year ago before the new helmet rule) : r/AZCardinals

I like the idea of the Cardinals adopting a sandy gray into their color scheme, but only if they do so tastefully. I'd prefer they lean more traditional, but I wouldn't mind moving forward to something more modern as long as it isn't gimmicky or overly complicated, but I don't think Nike is capable of creating completely new looks without going way off the deep end anymore. I especially don't trust Nike with either the Arizona flag or adding extra colors.

If it were me, I'd go with something like this, inspired by Andrew Lind's idea. Keep it simple, limit usage of sandy gray.

Honestly, if the Cards just did the Jaguars set but in their colors I wouldn’t hate it. Add the number outline and boom, I think it would be the perfect (or at least safe) set.

I can support the design, I just can't support anything in life that is "greige".   Ask my wife.

Also, I will say, I love the idea of them never having a Cardinal pant again, if the helmet stays White.  I absolutely deplore it when a team's pant color is darker than their helmet.  So unbalanced.

I don't want to see a Sand helmet/Sand jersey combo, but I would be interested in seeing a Red or Black facemask on that "Desert Sand" helmet...

I could even look forward to a Desert Sand helmet/Black alt jersey/Desert Sand pant/Black sock uniform with Cardinal Red accents sprinkled tastefully throughout.

I'm now a believer in Sand, Cardinal, and Black, thanks to Nike's "Serpientes" City Connect uniforms for the Diamondbacks.  I needed to see it in real life.  The Cardinal logo and Cardinal Red would pop off of the neutral & strongly-contrasting palette of Sand/Black:

Agreed, but I don’t necessarily think it’s the brand that’s the problem. It’s the way the organization handles it that’s the problem. The Cardinals are the oldest team in the NFL, but you wouldn’t know that by just about anything they do. Be it the uniforms, stadium, and even the location, you would be hard pressed to guess that the Cardinals are older than the Bears unless you already knew that. That’s the biggest reason why I think the Cardinals should sort of just do what they did until the most recent update. Go simple because it reflects the longevity of the franchise, and I do think that’s something to be celebrated in the most popular sports league in the country.

Adding sand would kind of rock, but the truth is the best solution for the Cardinals is the most simple one.

The Diamondbacks Serpentes jersey is my alltime favorite behind the Tigers home. If the Cardinals could integrate some sand into the uniform whike making it classy. I'm all for it.

I just get Ohio State vibes from this. As Michigan fan I can't get behind this. This is my hometown team and seeing them as the Buckeyes will disappoint me

FWIW - PHNX podcast also confirmed that it's happening. Logo is staying, white helmets are staying, and everything else is potentially changing including the face mask.

I always really thought this is what the Cardinals should look like, though I really doubt this is what they'll go with. Their the oldest franchise, Red and White is not a super common main color combo in the NFL despite being classic, and it looks good. But I really doubt it's what they'll go with, I think they'll either really lean into black, which would stink, or lean into the Sandy, Arizona flag look, which...I think can look good, but I haven't seen many concepts or examples where I really love it.

Hot take: the football cardinals brand no longer has any value, and hasn’t for decades - probably since the change to “Arizona”. They probably should have been totally rebranded then, and should be now.

I don’t personally care about how old the franchise is, and I doubt people in Arizona care about what happened in Chicago, or Tom Tupa, etc. Its essentially a new team, and should have a more meaningful identity.

Thumbs down all you want, as I’m sure I’m in the minority. But trying to force a team that plays in space ship and has relocated (or changed location names) 3 times to be hamstrung by a classic identity doesn’t feel right. Just retire the whole thing.

Visually, I'm a big fan of the old St. Louis Cardinals look, especially the all white set. It's one of the most underrated looks in the history of pro football.

I otherwise think your hot take might be spot on.

I always thought it was strange that a city would have two professional sports teams named the Cardinals. (I came to learn after moving here that locals referred to the football team as "Big Red.") That alone would have been logical reasoning for a name change. And even as a 12-year-old in 1988 I thought it was dumb that the team didn't change upon relocating to Phoenix.

At the same time, though, I kind of hate being the guy who suggests to longtime fans that the team you follow should just start over.

I’d like to see the Cardinals look like the red and white version of Wazzu or the Jaguars, simple, but contemporary. I think the yoke on the white jersey is a salvageable idea if you want to have a little more going on with the white jersey. Maybe a copper or sand colored beak would be a nice local nod. I hope I’m wrong but I’m afraid we’ll get something less Jaguars/Bengals and more Titans/gradient helmet Jags…with LOTS of black.

shameless plug: (3 years old, don’t really love the sunburst anymore)

Wow, Tom Tupa catching strays in here…It’s a cold world! 😂

I do agree with everything you said, though. There’s really nothing about the Cardinals brand anymore that says “historic franchise.” A simple modernization can work. If the rumor about keeping the logo and white helmet is accurate, it sounds like a promising start.
