I love that we all seem to have different hills to die on. I'll never not chuckle at this one.

Haha, this is definitely one of the things I'm peculiar about, to say the least.  I love that the NFL doesn't allow it, in a way, as it keeps things uniform and traditional, but at the same time, it has the potential to take some new helmet designs from a B to an A+ real quick.  I almost want them to allow it for redesigns only for teams that have Black as a color;  I don't want the Steelers or Raiders to start using Black helmet bumpers, even though it's a team color, because it would ruin their classic signature helmets with the White bumpers.

Agree.  The XFL 2.0 version of the Renegades helmet was far superior to the 2023 version.  Dwayne Johnson should be slapped for letting this Renegades helmet on the field.

Still, this wouldn't look nearly as good in the NFL with the ban on Black helmet hardware, and it also would destroy the Panthers' best look, which is this:

Panthers got it right the first time.

I dunno about that one. The A’s have moved twice and are possibly about to make a third move (probably into some hyper modern dome/retractable roof stadium). I certainly wouldn’t want them to ditch their brand for something new. I think that’s the thing about classic brands. If done right and with enough recognition, those brands should be able to transcend their location. Now, I wouldn’t argue that the Cardinals set is more iconic than, say, the Raiders, because that would be tremendously silly. But the truth of the matter is their brand is nearly a half century older than the Raiders (you could argue it’s closer to 80 years of you want to include pre NFL days, which I’m hesitant to), and I really do think there’s some heft to that that the Cardinals have never figure out how to utilize properly. And it’s kind of perfect for a place like Phoenix/Maricopa County, because that area lacks a lot of that classic culture just due to being a more recent city in terms of population growth (and that’s not to knock the Phoenix or AZ culture, because it’s definitely rich in its own right. It’s just more overlooked outside of the area).  It’s definitely an area, mainly due to having so many transplants, that’s more receptive to assimilating parts of another area’s culture. You could even find a way to play up the old Chicago connection due to their being so many people who live there who are originally from the Chicagoland area. It might be a bit of a reach, but I think with enough tact, that could be done effectively. “Did you leave Chicago because it’s too damn cold? Are you sick of the Bears? Well, so did the Cardinals! Come join Chicago’s other team!” Or something like that, anyway.

The thing is that the A's did a color change in 1963 from Red, White And Blue to Kelly Green and Gold. So, the A's set radically changed while in KC- about 3 yrs after leaving Philly.

Carolina needs to add an outline to the current logo if they are going to make black the primary helmet. Personally, I hope they don't.

I don't think so. The Panther needs to be hiding in the helmet for it to even work. Adding any outline would screw it up. It should be a transparent decal so that it blends completely otherwise it just looks weird and off like the alternate helmet.

How they did it:

How they should do it:

By the way the fact the logo doesn't have white eyes and teeth on the alternate helmet is one of the dumbest things ever.

The point of a logo is to stand out. Yes panthers track their prey and blend in, but this is football. It's why I hate Louisville's helmets so much.

You can't even see where the cardinal is at times, and you know it's on the helmet.

That’s definitely true. But even with that, they still kept the same basic script style, the A, and the elephant. I’m more talking about the Cardinals doing a full rebrand away from the bird.

Although, now that I think about it, they probably could’ve rebranded as something like the Phoenix Firebirds, which would’ve given them more of a local flare AND let them keep the Cardinal bird.

I dunno, I’m biased. The only AZ based team I like (other than the Sun Devils) is the Cardinals. I’d like to see the brand stay, but there have been quite a few good points made here about changing it 🤷‍♂️ I guess I can be easily swayed!

PVC patch...is that a first in the NFL for on-field jersey use?

i think the 1st were the SB50 "patches", but not 100%.  Panthers 25th was like this.

If Carolina is in fact switching uniforms, they will have NEVER worn a colored jersey with the current uniform set against the Texans, who they host this season. I really hope that game is scheduled in November or December so that Carolina wears black (assuming that is still the default home jersey color).

For what it’s worth DJ Moore tweeted this right before he  got traded to the Bears

Would excite & sadden me at the same time.   I've long wanted someone to use Matte White b/c it can be so sweet with the right mask/decals.  It would sadden me because again, it looks best with Black, and therefore Black hardware, which can't be used in the NFL.  It would also sadden me because that means no more Silver helmets for the Panthers.

I'm telling you, the Panthers just need to keep the same helmet and change the striping out for a solid thick Black stripe with a thin Panther Blue stripe in the middle and it would be perfect.

I think I tried that not long ago...

Yep, that would do it for me.  If that thin Panther Blue stripe ended in a point, about an inch or so from the bottom of the helmet in back, cool too.

Gotta burn the Black pants, though.

If it were up to me personally, gray pants would be the only option, but it seems like for the NFL in 2023 that ship has sailed.

More draft hats (though not all) in snapback form:

Looks like they'll be for sale at the major stores this week (this UK store on eBay and another store from Australia have posted some ahead of time)
