....That may in part explain why the clipper ship may be rendered as if you're looking at it head-on from a perspective point somewhat below the bow.

I thought about that as well, but I'm not buying it.

If that is supposed to be a ship with sails, the proportions are ALL wrong. The hull is far too large in proportion to the sail area, and has the same dimensions as a more modern propeller driven craft.

You could say that it is a matter of perspective, that you are looking at it head-on from low in the water, thus the hull looks so big in proportion to the sails.

I'm not buying it. Look at these two pictures, one a print of an old clipper ship and a photo of a cruise clipper ship from head-on, very low, almost UNDER the bowsprit:

The sail area will always be  SO much larger than the hull size; no matter how you look at it.

I like the general idea of going back to the nautical nature, but the new logo's execution is TERRIBLE, and for that I give it a fail.

By the way, the three triangles on the old San Diego Clippers logo were not representative of the mainsails, but three jibs attached to the bowsprit:

One other thing, although Los Angeles is on the water, Los Angles Clippers is about as appropriate as "Los Angeles LAKERS". Los Angeles has no natural harbor and was not much of a sailing or ship port of call until dredging was undertaken in the late 1800s and breakwaters and major wharf/harbor facilities were built around the turn of the 20th century, well after the age of sail.

Just a quick idea I had trying to combine the San Diego colors and the unused '90s colors with the new logo:

I liked the one on the left better first, but now I'm starting to prefer the sublety of how the seafoam green and light blue almost blend into each other in the one on the right.

Probably a little too much for a permanent logo but both are cool colourways for a one-off or for merch.

Another reason not to use the clippers name in Los Angeles. Thank you.

Is San Pedro not a natural harbour?

(Side note: the pronunciation "San Pidro" annoys me.)

Do you listen to the Minutemen enough that you encounter it that often?

I've never listened to them, though I gather that that's one of their songs.

I know of this pronunciation from a friend from California who expressed to me his intense hatred for that mispronunciation, as well as for the mangling of the name of Northern California's San Rafael, which is usually pronounced "San Rafel".

We got onto the subject in the first place by talking about the fact that the movie Hoosiers is set in an Indiana city whose name Milan is, for some unfathomable reason,  pronounced "Mylin". I then complained to him about the unfortunate pronunciation of the name of the New Jersey town of Bogota, with the stress on the second syllable, whereupon he topped me by mentioning San Pedro and San Rafael.

Nope.  In fact, the main port until they dredged the now Port of LA and coverted Rattlesnake Island to Terminal Island was Redondo Beach.

As per Wikipedia:

The south-facing San Pedro Bay was originally a shallow mudflat, too soft to support a wharf.  Visiting ships had two choices: stay far out at anchor and have their goods and passengers ferried to shore, or beach themselves. That sticky process is described in Two Years Before the Mast by Richard Henry Dana Jr., who was a crew member on an 1834 voyage that visited San Pedro Bay.   Phineas Banning greatly improved shipping when he dredged the channel to Wilmington in 1871 to a depth of 10 feet.

The Southern Pacific Railroad  wanted to create "Port Los Angeles" at Santa Monica, and built the Long Wharf there in 1893.   However, Los Angeles Times publisher Harrison Gray Otis and U.S. Senator Stephen White pushed for federal support of the Port of Los Angeles at San Pedro Bay.  The Free Harbor Fight was settled when San Pedro was endorsed in 1897 by a commission headed by Rear Admiral John C. Walker.

With U.S. government support, breakwater construction began in 1899, and the area was annexed to Los Angeles in 1909.

In 1912 the Southern Pacific Railroad completed its first major wharf at the port.

In the early 1930s, a massive expansion of the port was undertaken with the construction of a breakwater three miles out and over two miles in length. In addition to the construction of this outer breakwater, an inner breakwater was built off Terminal Island with docks for seagoing ships and smaller docks built at Long Beach.

I spent a part of my honeymoon in the San Pedro Harbor and the entire time I could hear the Jackass theme and “punk rock changed our lives/ grew up in peedro” in the lead singer’s voice.

Similarly to @Ferdinand Cesarano, I hate the way they say Prescott, AZ, and hate even more how everyone jumps down your throat about it.

But I get it. The constant mispronunciation of Nevada fills me with an irrational rage.

I hoped for the old San Diego colors - but something about this red- especially contrasted with the Navy - gives an orangey pop that I love. Reminds me of the original Bobcats orange.

I wonder if the same reasons make me dislike the shades for the Wizards, who would be better with more traditional r/w/b

Logo is too monotonously blue. Reminds me of the original /temporary Hornets CH that got relegated to the waistband.

Thanks for this summary.  The ship rendering is the one thing about the rebrand that bothers me, but I couldn't quite articulate why.

To me, it looks more like a destroyer (see below).  The hint of crosshairs created by the compass marks adds to the impresssion, almost as if the viewer is looking through a periscope.

That's true. Although I don't mind them sticking with navy as it helps differentiate them from Montreal a bit more.

I do because the navy color combined with their dated uniform design leads to one of the dullest, most uninspiring looks in the NHL. They're essentially stuck in 2008.

Considering we’re at the tail end of the “message board internet” era, I swear some weirdo is gonna eventually make a documentary about this place for Netflix or something.

I would watch the hell out of a documentary about board culture in general. If you spent 2005-2006 arguing with a guy from Kitchener, Ontario eight years your senior whose avatar was the cover of If You're Feeling Sinister subtitled "turning down sex like my name's Al Bundy," you have lay awake wondering what possibly could have become of that guy. Maybe such a movie would find the answer.
