NFL Sept. 11 patches?

I'm writing a column for next week's paper on how sport brings people together in the face of tragedy, and I'm wondering if anyone remembers if the NFL had any special patches, helmet stickers or the like after Sept. 11. I can't remember for the life of me. Thanks.

The league had twin tower decals on backs of the helmets. White and blue. I'll try to find a picture.

EDIT: Clearly not the best picture, but it's the best I could find in two minutes. Look at the Jets player.

Jets @ Pats 9/23/01

Smart is believing half of what you hear. Genius is knowing which half.

The entire league didn't wear those. I think it was just the NYC teams.

This was the first Packer game after 9/11:

Washington added a design to some sideline stuff - a flag in the shape of a pentagon to honor, well, the Pentagon.

They did add a flag to the back of all teams' helmets, still worn today. Here's a picture (which also shows the Pat Tillman tribute worn by all teams for one game on September 19th, 2004 (Week 2):

You also have to remember that they completely redesigned the Super Bowl logo that year, from something hideously reflective of New Orleans to the patriotic spread that utilized the United States covered in the flag.

The September 11th Twin Tower decals, were worn on the back of the helmets of the New York Jets and New England Patriots as they played each other at Foxborough Stadium on Sunday September 23rd, 2001 @ 4PM. The decal was only worn by both teams for only the one game, the next week they were gone. it featured a white decal of the WTC towers detailed and highlighted in blue.

I do not know if the NY Giants or Buffalo Bills or for that matter any other might have worn them as well. The two teams that I know wore them both had significance in wearing them, New York might have been the city where the planes ended up, but both planes that hit the WTC orignated out of Boston's Logan International Airport. It was fitting that both cities whom usually harbor much animocity towards one another in expressing sports rivalry should come together in this period of mourning- it was only by chance the football schedule should happen to do the same.

The game was opened by a moment of silence and the teams were lead onto the field by flag-waving Patriots offensivie lineman Joe Andruzi as he had his father & 3 brothers who were all New York City firefighters. Thankfully, none of them were lost on 9/11. They were there with him at the game's coin toss all wearing replicas of his #63 jersey under their firefighter gear. :flagusa:

The game was particularly memorable because not only did the Patriots lose to the Jets by a score of 10-3, they also lost their starting quarterback Drew Bledsoe in a freak injury, the game and for that matter for the rest of the season the position was filled in by the Patriots 2nd year back-up. Some hack out of Michigan, you might have heard of him...

and the rest they say is history.

We all have our little faults. Mine's in California.

Best Super Bowl logo ever. Hands down. They changed the Pro Bowl logo also. Both were the best logos for their event to ever come out

The NFL did put banners along stadium walls with the NFL shield flanked by red, white and blue streamers and the words "UNITED WE STAND" for the rest of the season.

the mets wore NYPD and FDNY hats for a while after that. the yankees i think might have done it for just one game-- but that might have been only torre i cant remember right now. the yankees did change their NY logo on the field to a red and blue with white stars NY logo.

the NBA had te red white and blue ribbon on the courts and a ribbon with an american flag in the middle of it on the and jerseys - the raptors flag was split canada-usa.

rangers and sabres both wore commemorative NEW YORK jerseys instead of RANGERS and the sabres logo.

The NFL coaches wore a U.S. flag with 9-11-01 underneath the following year the week before the first 9/11 anniversary.

I will be in England playing in a football(soccer) tournament on 9-11. We will hold a moment of silence before each team's opening game of the day. Last year it was the opening day of the tournament, this year it will be on the closing day.

BTW, MLS teams wore the Liberty patch on the right sleeve. They even wore them through the 2002 season if I remember correctly. The proceeds from people buying the patch went to the families affected.
