Best Sports Team Ever

Best One-Season Team:

1948 Cleveland Browns or 1972 Miami Dolphins, take your pick.  Going undefeated in pro football, then or now, is hard as hell.

Best Multi-Season Team:

Boston Celtics, 1960's.  The Bulls might've won 6 in 9 years, but the Celtics won 8.  In a row.

Best Multi-Decade Team:

New York Yankees.  You could kinda make a case for the Canadiens, but most of their Stanley Cups were won in an era when the NHL had 6 teams and 4 made the playoffs every year.

then let me add-

Single season-

1948 Calgary Stampeders--unlike the 48 Browns--the Stamps won the playoffs-and started the record for consecutive wins by a CFL team (continuing into 49)

Multi-season-

Have to agree with 60's Celtics--with the 50's & 70's Habs as runners up.

Multi Decade-

Maybe the Yankees, but the Habs have also won more Cups post 1967 as well.

(71, 73, 76-79, 86, 93)

NCAAF: '04 Southern California Trojans

Wait...you've been saying this year's USC team is the greatest ever? What gives? Did you finally wake up?

'03 '04 '05... All those USC teams were/are great. It will be the 2005 team for sure once they win the National Championship :D

I find it ironic you list the '04 Trojans, but not the '04 Auburn Tigers...they did split the national title after all.

Tell me ... What poll did Auburn win in 2004??

The Trojans won 2004 outright. You're probably mixing Auburn up with 2003 and LSU.

Because it was mentioned that any sport here is my best team ever. 1984-1988 USA Men's Volleyball Team>1984 & 1988 Olympic Gold Medals, 1985 World Cup Champs, 1986 World Champion Gold Medal, 1987 Pan Am Gold Medal.

What do we mean by "best sports team"?

Best franchise?

Best team in a particular year.... or over a ten year span?

This is like comparing apples to oranges. This topic is absurd, but I would love to see these match ups.

Pretty much boils down to this, off the top of my head:

Baseball - '27 Yanks vs 70s Oakland A's

Hockey - 70s USSR team vs 80s Edmonton Oilers

Football - don't even no where to begin on this...

72/73 perfect season Dolphins vs. 80s 49ers (I was gonna say 70s Steelers but the perfect season Dolphins beat them in the playoffs that year)

Basketball -

60s Celtics vs 90s Bulls

I guess a lot of you were too young, but those mid-80's Edm. Oilers teams were just unstoppable. I know, I watched them take everything the Flyers could give them.

I guess a lot of you were too young, but those 70's Montreal Canadiens teams were that good and that dominant-

4 Cups in a row, and records for Regular Season records, and playoff win/loss records as well.

If you think about it logically and speculate, the Broncos could have won four straight Super Bowls. I know you're all laughing but bear with me here. They were the best team in the NFL in the regular season in 1996, and if Elway hadn't retired, they most likely would have rolled to a third straight at least in 1999. So that could have been four consecutive.

By that logic, the Eagles are the best team ever.

If...

- Freddy Mitchell caught the pass in St. Louis and knocked off the Rams;

- Ronde Barber didn't take the INT 90 yards as the Birds were driving late in the 4th at the Vet;

- Todd Pinkston wasn't a 90-pound weakling that allowed Ricky Manning Jr. to steal his lunch over and over again; and

- McNabb and Reid actually devised and ran a real 2-minute offense, we're talking about a 4-time Super Bowl winner.

But Best Teams Ever don't use the word "if". No conditions, no ifs, and or buts. Sorry Broncos - good doesn't make you Best Team Ever. ^_^

In order for the Mets' run of 12 losses in 17 games to mean something, the Phillies still had to win 13 of 17.

Using the same logic...ANY TEAM IN HISTORY could be a dynasty. Even the 1974-78 Washington Capitals.

I said it because it's something I have thought about for a while. I never even said they would have been the best team ever, I just said the COULD have won four straight Super Bowls but did not. They won two and that's it, nothing more.

I NEVER said anything about them even possibly being the best team ever. You should go back and read my entire post.

Overall I still say the Yankees if for no other reason than how long they have been doing it. But for the fun of it here are my personal picks broken down by overall, dynasty and single season. (geez I think I am putting way too much effort into this...)

NFL Overall: The 49ers. From 1981 through 1998 they were one of the elite teams in the league. 5 super bowl wins and they dominated the 80's. They also had some playoff seasons before their run in the 80's.

MLB Overall: Yankees. Period.

NBA Overall: The Celtics were the 60's but for overall excellence it's gotta be the Lakers. They have won titles in every era but the 60's I think.

NHL Overall: The Canadiens. Period.

Dynasty Teams.

NFL Dynasty: The 70's Pittsburgh Steelers. Had the talent to win 6 straight Super Bowls.

MLB Dynasty: The 50's Yankees were great, so were the 90's Yankees but my pick is the 70's Oakland A's. If Charlie Finley hadn't been so cheap that A's team might have won 5 or 6 World Series.

NBA Dynasty: The Russell era Celtics. 9 out of 12? Nuff said.

NHL Dynasty: It's a tie between the 80's Islanders and 80's The Oilers. Look at all the talent between those two teams. I honestly can't say one team was better than the other.

Single Season Teams.

NFL: The 1985 Chicago Bears. Best defense ever. When Bob Trumpy was asked if the Patriots had a chance in Super Bowl XX he replied "I don't know how they're going to score a point against The Bears."

MLB: Here's one out of left field...The 1984 Detroit Tigers. Not one Hall of Famer that I can think of on that team yet they started out 35-5 and crushed everything in their path. 25 pretty good ballplayers but no great ones...except Jack Morris.

NBA: The 72-10 95-96 Chicago Bulls.

NHL: I'll take the 76-77 Habs. 60-8-12 and won the cup. 8 losses? In 80 games?

My 2 cents... :D

OK. Greatest sports team IN THEIR RESPECTED LEAGUE AND DIVISION has to be the De La Salle High School football teams of the 1990s and early 2000s. Any team that has a winning streak of 150+ games, has to be placed very high on the list. And no, i dont think that they could beat the 1998 Denver Broncos in a head to head matchup. Thats not what im saying. And BTW, De La Salle is in Concord, California

heres an article on the school. Hey, it taught me something, Ted Ginn Jr. Went there
