Chris Simon about to be suspended a long time

After seeing this replay 75 times, I totally agree, Pat. He's got a history. He needs to go, for good. He's a punk with no respect for the game, his opponents, or his team even. There's no place in this game for a criminal like this.

Anyway, the initial hit was, in my opinion, from behind, and therefore a bit dirty. However, there is NO EXCUSE for Simon's actions. None whatsoever. No explanation will ever be satisfactory, no circumstances even remotely relevant. A good long suspension and hefty fine are in order here.

I still think Bertuzzi's was worse, because he didn't face the guy up. But this isn't far off.

I use the same line because it always fits. When they stop acting like punks with no respect for the game, I'll stop saying it. Deal. You choose to get all sensitive when I comment on stuff like this. That makes it a 'you' problem.

Anyway, I pretty much agree with you about the initial hit, it was dirty. At first, I thought Simon sitting for remainder of the season was enough...at first, but the more I saw that replay, the worse it looked. Simon used his stick as a weapon, in a much more vicious manner than Marty McSorely. I look at the 'intent' moreso than the result which is why IMO this is much worse than Bertuzzi's hit on Steve Moore and much, much worse that McSorely's hit on Brashear.

I don't think this is anywhere close to the Bertuzzi incident. This was more of a spontaneous thing where the Bertuzzi thing was something that was planned for 3 weeks and was premeditated. Hell the teams even played a game against each other in between the Moore on Naslund hit game and the Bertuzzi sucker punch on Moore game. Nothing happened in that game because Bettman and Campbell was there. The Bertuzzi thing was far worse.

Simon will ultimately get a nice long suspension after the hearing given his history.

I'll echo the prior comment. Spontaneous reaction, albeit disproportionate to what precipitated it. It wasn't a planned hit like Bertuzzi's. That said, take him out for the balance of the season, maybe the first round of the playoffs too. We needn't kick him out of the league.

Also, "suspended along time"? As in along the time-space continuum? That actually might be a stiff punishment indeed.

I disagree about the dirtiness of the original hit. Although he approached Simon from behind, it looks to me like he did everything he could to make it shoulder-to-shoulder (of course, I only saw the replay a couple of times, as I don't have the benefit of youtube at work.)

However, Simon needs to be punished hard. I'd give him the rest of the year, and at least 20 next year too. But Campbell won't, he's as gutless as Burke was.

The initial hit on Simon is clean. His embellishment of that is quite sad. His actions after that are beyond disgusting. If Bettman and Campbell don't throw the book at him, I will be very upset with the league.

But while kicking him out completely may be considered too harsh Im just thinking, this guy has a history of unnecessary violence. Then he goes and swings his stick like a bat at someone's head. If I was running the league I wouldn't want someone like that playing and representing the league.

Anyone else outraged by Simon's teammate Brendan Witt downplaying this? If you haven't seen it elsewhere, here's Witt's comment quoted on ESPN.com:

"It always looks worse," Witt said. "I saw the guy after the game, he looked fine. That's enough to tell me that it wasn't that bad. You know what I mean?

"The ref obviously thought it was clean," Witt said of Hollweg's hit. "Maybe if there had been a call, it would have never escalated to that."

Unbelievable. The league ought to give Witt 3 games just for implying there might be the slightest hint of a justification.

I have a question though. I've only seen the video of the hit and nothing afterwards. Did anyone on the entire Rangers team go after Simon? Why wasn't he bloody on the way to be escorted off the ice? This is why thing like this can occur. The player who commits the act knows that the teammates will do nothing. If I was Hollweg's teammate, I would of gone after Simon. I don't care if I get suspended with Simon or I get a penalty for it.

But that's just me. That's how I play the game. Stand up for your teammates even if it means you neck.
