The best uniform of all time

You can call me biased if you want, but in terms of originality, I believe my Buccaneers have the best current set in the NFL.

Now keep in mind I said on terms of ORIGINALITY...and here's why I say that:

-Everyone knows red represents blood. Not to mention that red draws a connotation with "fierce". A lesser known aspect: red was often a color used to signify a fort's headquarters in battle.

-Pewter. Think "cannonballs". Now think "pirate ship". See how well those two come together? Now, add this aspect in: ever seen a thinderstorm? What color is the sky? GRAY. Now envision this: pirates coming in a storm. Kind of a fearsome sight, if you can envision it. Add to that the fact that the Tamps Bay region is the lightning-strike capital of the world (which means it sees more than its fair share of thunderstorms) and it all comes together.

-The way that flag just pops off that helmet...can't nann 'nother helmet in the league match it.

-The Bucs went from one of the most unique color schemes, however garish it may have been to most, to...one of the most unique color schemes used currently. (What other team in any sport used any kind of gray before the Bucs featured it prominently?

-Lost in all of that is this interesting little tidbit: it was the Buccaneers redesign in 1997 that touched off the NFL black shoe revolution. How many people can think of one team in the league that had black shoes prior to that? (Well...during the '90s, anyway)

Absolutely brilliant, Bucco. Couldn't have said it better myself.

I am going to say the Montreal Canadiens red. Although I think red and blue is one of the worst, most overused colour combinations in sports les Canadiens pull it off beautifuly. The thick blue stripe across the middle breaks up what would be an overdose of red otherwise and the logo is one of the most recogniseable logos in professional sports. It's more than just a uniform, it represents the proud history of the Montreal Canadiens, the most storied franchise in hockey history, it represents 24 Stanley Cups. It has been worn by some of the greatest men to ever play the great game of hockey: Maurice Richard, Jacques Plante, Guy LaFleur, Patrick Roy just to name a few. It is for these and so many other reasons that the Montreal Canadiens red uniform is the greatest uniform of all time.

(the Yankees pinstripe was a close second)

Yeah, yeah... Bears, Canadians, Yankees, blah, blah, blah. How shocking... didn't see those answers coming. How about this? Take out any consideration of tradition, or of how long a uniform has been around. Look at it purely from a design stand point. Just pretend every uniform suddenly winked into existance TODAY. Now seriously... you'd still say the Bears? The Yankees? I don't think so.

Actually, let's do a "Who's Now?" version ... Detroit Tigers, New York Yankees, Carleton FC, Glasgow Celtic, FC Barcelona, Juventus, Chivas, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, D.C. United, Ajax, Manchester United, Chelsea, Boston Celtics, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears, Michigan football, Notre Dame football, Indiana basketball, Harlem Globetrotters (before the Reebok era), St. Louis Cardinals, Durham Bulls, Ohio State football, UCLA basketball, Boston Red Sox, Penn State football, Oklahoma football, Nebraska football, Detroit Red Wings, Ohio State football, the Argentina men's soccer team, Brazil's selecao ... stop me before I pull a Weekly World News and my head explodes!

Each of the above are classic and eternal -- the 60s and 70s and the 1995 third jersey craze notwithstanding.

These are both minor league uniforms and they are very personal. First is the Rochester Americans from 1959-69. The simplicity of the Amerks' style during that decade was and still is timeless. The classic crest, sans the lettering, is the best version they ever used. Secondly the Rochester Red Wings baseball team from 1947-64. The Cardinal-style striping with the classic "Red Wings" script and the ball-and-wings emblem are baseball perfection. These were the uniforms of my youth. Plus I'm very prejudiced because the sporting goods store that I worked for supplied both teams. They were the class of the AHL and the International League.

Without a doubt Michigan football. Simple, clean, classy, and the only team that could ever pull off that helmet style.

The only team???

Are you sure?

Man--I could sworn that...

Wait--hold up--wait a minute...

I mean...cuz I coulda--ah wait--that's right:

Chuck307.jpg

This team had that style first!

(That style was brought from Princeton to Michigan back in like 1938 or something like that when the then-coach of the Tigers, whose name I cannot recollect right now, took over the Wolverines. But yes--the Wolverine helmet is easily the most recognized helmet in all of football. I'll give you that.)

*Disclaimer: I am not an authoritative expert on stuff...I just do a lot of reading and research and keep in close connect with a bunch of people who are authoritative experts on stuff. 😁

NFL - Da Bears! (Honorable mention to the Jets and Raiders; those jerseys are more of an attitude than a jersey.)

MLB - Dodgers. (Never mind the fact that my adopted Japanese team ripped off their look until 2005. :D)

NBA - For the sake of something different, how about the Pistons? I liked the horsie logo (after re-coloring), but the current ones are good too.

NHL - Too many to mention. I'll be different here too and say the Blues' current ones (especially the blue ones), with the Wild's whites close behind.

CFB - Michigan

CBB - UNC

Say what you want about who had the winged helmets first, but you think of Michigan when you see that style. And the folks at Michigan know it -- so much so that other sports (such as hockey) use that style on the helmets.

I'm going to follow the original post and just pick ONE, but it's a tough call.

For me, it's got to be the home version of this:

nl_1962_houston.gif

I love everything about it - the way the orange and blue are perfectly balanced (especially the way the "Colts" jersey wordmark pops, the politically incorrect pistol underlining the wordmark, the fact that the cap and jersey both refer to the team nickname but are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT, the kick ass stirrups...to me, this is just about uniform perfection. And the shooting star set that followed this is pretty damned close as well.

My picks are all over the map. Some conservative, others wild, simple sampling of my favorite uniforms.

College Football- K-State Bill Snyder Era uniforms 1989- 2006

College Basketball- Tulsa Nolan Richardson era unies. Wild design for a wildly entertaining team

MLB- Home San Francisco Giants 2000-Present, true the cream color is cool and undervalued

NBA- Old school rainbow Nuggets

NFL- Chargers in the powder blues with gold pants
