Dude, Where's My Country???

I'm weary of this pandering: they DON'T do it for other ethnic groups (Okay, St. Patrick's Day Unis, and Negro League Unis which ought to be recognized).

Nice job contradicting yourself.

Really, what is the harm? Would you not attend that game out of protest? Besides, what to you mean by "My Country"?

What do the hispanics think of this? do they really even care? Is it really going to attract any more hispanics to the game by making a hispanic version of the jersey? I don't know what do they think about this? i know what the whites think of this but what about them?

UGH... this is even worse than Real Salt Lake.

Gigantes and Cerveceros makes sense... those are literal and equivalent translations of Giants and Brewers respectively.

But Los Mets? That's a pathetic attempt at making a generic word with no meaning outside the anglosphere sound foreign. Not to mention it borders on insulting.

Hey, maybe they can get Christina Aguliera to sing the national anthem...

I Agree, rather than "Honoring" Latino players this kinda says "Hey, we tried to think of a way to honor you, but we were too lazy to come up with anything original, so we half assed it and just tossed a Latin word in front of the name. Cool huh?". Hell, I could thik of about a thousand ways to better serve Latinos everywhere. Maybe add a patch of a different Latino influenced country to the sleeve of all the players jerseys and auction them off after the game and give the money to a Latino Charity, change the pinstripes to red and green, give the Mets baseball patch more of a Latino feel, or hell, even my personal favorite, just take all that extra money you were gonna waste on these crappy Los jerseys and donate it to a New York based Latino charity.

Actually, maybe I should change my name to Los Bucfan56 to honor the Latins.

That's just abysmal. It might have even been better if they had put Nueva York on the front. Those look ridiculous.

Somehow, they will reap the benefits of appealling to the Latino community with this vulgar Public Relations move.

Political Correctness must be destroyed!

The Stupid?

In terms of appealing to a certain ethnic group, I think MLB, and to larger extent all leagues, has it backwards. What they should be doing is trying to appeal to the non-traditional ethnic groups. Asians other than Japanese, Korean or Taiwanese, the Germans, the French, the Swedes, the Greeks etc.

Meet los Mets, meet los Mets,

Head for los park and greet los Mets.

Hot dogs, green grass all out at Shea,

Guaranteed to have a heck of a day.

Because those Mets are really rockin' that ball,

Hittin' those home runs over los wall.

Long Island, New Jersey, Brooklyn, Queens, Uptown and Down,

Let's Go Mets: that's los cheer all over New York town.

^_^

I saw, I came, I left.

See... the only reason I don't have a problem with it being so small is because their de-emphasizing the word "the". Let's put it in English terms... which looks better across the front of a uniform:

THE METS

The

METS

I think it can be misconstrued as pandering because the change is so small, but I think that's the reason behind it.

Well It's not as bad as I thought it'd be...not a fan though:

I almost feel less embarrased about these now.

It could be worse: "Filadelfia" or "San Luis" for the Phillies and Cards, anyone?

And I wouldn't be surprised if the Mariners had Japanese jerseys one day -- oh, wait, you can actually read the word "Yomiuri" on the Giants' jerseys. My bad.

Don't be like TNak. Please.

How about "El Birdos" for Cardinals Latino day. :P

Whoever thinks this is an issue is being ridiculous. They are trying to do something nice. It is better than what they do on Jewish Heritage Day when they announce the lineups using made up Hebrew names for the players!

losmets.com is also the Spanish version of their website.

I think the main issue some people are having, myself included is that its kind of ingenuine and forced. Although there is some sincerity behind the move the execution leaves little to be desired.

BTW, do you have any examples of the names they use during Jewish Heritage Day?

I'm just curious.

Interesting. Well then, the little "Los" just got a bit better to me. Nice.

Know what I'd like to see? A Japanese Mariners day. Ichiro and Kenji are big-time here and across the ocean. Mariners uniforms written in Japanese characters would be pretty neat to see. They'd sell a whole bunch too.

I'd like to see it too, but it would be pretty ironic, considering that uniforms in Japan use... the Roman alphabet with Arabic numerals. :D

Who ever said pandering...I mean, cultural celebration...is ever 100 percent rational?

Dude, Where's My Country???

Another one, huh? Sucks being the dominant gender, presumably race, and nationality in the universe.

Wow, you took my post way too seriously, you'd think with my "Dude, Where's My Country" reference that I wasn't being that uptight about it.

For the record, my idea of Hell is a planet that is Caucasian American Male, I'd like to see the US be diverse but speak a common language (and it doesn't have to be the Queens English...it can be a funky English shaped by diverse American influences), AND I always refer to my team lovingly and not sarcastically as Los Bravos. I would much rather have Latino Celebration days for Los Bravos than the Faith Based Day they hold.

So keep up the good work with your knee-jerk political correctness. The Northwest Needs You. :)

My real beef is what powersurge said, it's so forced...otherwise I don't really care.

Ugh. Then if you're going to make jokes, be funnier. There's no shortage of white guys who feel gravely impugned every time another culture is celebrated and I thought you were another one.

But you have just 11 posts. Perhaps your particular brand of humor will be more apparent the longer you're a member of this community. In the future though, I'd avoid sarcasm unless it's incredibly obvious; it most often doesn't translate.

No it doesn't translate well on this board because sarcasm is an example of higher level thinking.

:P
