Reno's PCL team is named Aces

Yep, I was expecting the diamond and spade tie-in when I heard it was going to be the Aces.

The primary logo is in a way classy, yet VERY generic. The secondary/alternate logo isn't half bad though.

That said, unlike Pete Rose, I am NOT onboard with team's gambling reference. Bad call, Reno.

The full compliment of logos and uniforms.

I mentioned today that I didn't want to see a cliche'd spade logo...and the away jersey mark looks similar to the New Orleans Hornets.

I really like the sleeve logos, and that road "Reno" font, but agree that the primary logo leaves something to be desired...

Uggh, the more I see of these the more disappointed I am. They had SO much potential and completely copped out with a TERRIBLE gambling reference. Even the cap is bad, and that's usually impossible to mess up. At least slap an R on one of the caps to represent the city a bit better

And a white word mark on a grey uni? Are you serious?

Exactly what I was thinking. Those are going to be impossible to read from anywhere in the park.

Frisco RoughRiders have white wordmark/numerals (front & Back)/player names on their gray aways. Looks somewhat good/different up close, but from a distance, looks like really bad bleach stains on their jerseys.

I like the secondary logo better. The "Aces" word mark doesn't flow within itself. The right of the "A" and "ces" looks nice. The left of the "A" looks odd and creates an Illusion of some sort of rotation. The "RENO" word mark on the away is nice, but it is totally unrelated to the rest of the logos. I might like to see "ACES" in that same word mark. Being baseball, I like the "Ace / Diamond" reference. I love Altoona Curve as well.

I'm loving all of these marks and uniforms, especially the road uniforms. I don't mind the gambling theme -- it doesn't feel explicit to me.

If I had my choice, I'd try the secondary mark on the cap. It may seem clunky, but I like it far better than the "A" that's on them now. Those road jerseys, though, are beautiful, as are the BP jerseys.

Just to clarify - is there any gambling reference that you would have found palatable?

No, not really. But at least had they named the team the Aces and made it a plane theme it would've at least been tolerable. But to toss in a spade is just a cop out. Reno has so much to offer other than gambling. It's not my favorite city in the world, but it's the closest city to my home town, and to come up with a theme that can lead to players getting banned from the game your unis represent (In some cases) is just bad. Hell, even Vegas didn't go there.

Sums up my feelings exactly. The "Aces" script is OK, but with a slightly better-rendered A it could have been mind-blowingly awesome. And the "Reno" script is mind-blowingly awesome, but it's completely unrelated to the rest of the identity package. The A on the cap is too crooked to stand on its own like that. And the numbers on the front of the jerseys are much too small to stand next to the very tall scripts while the names and numbers on the back are too low.

All in all, this is a set of solid B or B-plus elements (well, a high A on the "Reno" mark) that are assembled with no coherence whatsoever, producing a mildly attractive C-minus uniform. It's a shame; this clearly was very close to being a great redesign.

The idea that playing cards can "lead players to getting banned from the game" by gambling on baseball makes just as much sense as the idea that drinking liquor can lead players to getting banned from the game by becoming addicted to hard drugs, and therefore the Brewers have an unconscionable name. Fact is, it's quite common for drug addicts to have had a drinking problem first.

But the prevalence of card-playing among ballplayers, including in team clubhouses, should be pretty solid evidence that there's really no potential harm in adopting a team identity based on playing cards. After all, the vast majority of grown-ups understand the difference between playing nickel-ante poker with your pals or even casino blackjack and placing bets with sports bookies. And even then, the gambling angle here is implicit. All the uniform elements communicate is "playing cards." If that causes you to think "gambling," that's about what you're bringing to it as a viewer, not anything inherent in the design itself. (Though I should say I also see the implicit "gambling" theme here, so you're not alone. It's just that it's important to realize that there's nothing in the designs themselves that require us to see "gambling.")

I do agree with you that it's a shame a more distinctly local, less touristy cliche name was not found.

Why does the card-theme have to associate with gambling? Should you go to Gamblers Anonymous if you're addicted to Solitaire? That game uses cards.

"Hi, my name is McCall, and I've have a gambling problem. I've been addicted to Go Fish since I was 4."

You sick bastard. At least play an honorable game like War or 3-Card Monty.

Yeah I have to agree with you, it was an over generalization of me to say that a card reference can be linked to betting on baseball. For that I am sorry. But, you basically hit the nail on the head of how I am feeling with that final line. Sure, Nevada is a state where gambling is legal. Sure Reno is a town with casinos. But truth of the matter is Nevada has so much more to offer that doesn't involve gambling or the use of meth ( a HUGE problem in the Reno-Stead area, and generally the only two responses I hear when I tell someone I'm from Nevada). It would be nice to see the state's own people try to focus on more than just what everyone already knows. It just reminds me exactly of when the Reno Chukars changed to the Reno BlackJacks

That and the set is just plain ugly.
