Watching the Saints/Bears game and the Celtics on TNT, I must say the small scorebox is the way to go. NFLN, TNT, regional FOX Sports Net(s). Smaller is better. The long, screen to screen bar on ESPN and FOX NFL/MLB is really annoying. I wonder if FOX will take the box they use for regional telecasts and use it for NFL or MLB anytime soon because it's really a much better look.

Agreed. Although I don't mind NBC's bar on the bottom of the screen too much.

One thing I can't stand is ESPN's new Monday Night ticker. It takes up 1/4th the screen which is just ridiculous. I mean there is really no point for it needing to take up that much room. So much space is wasted with tickers. FSN has done the right thing though with their new small tickers, those are beautiful. They get what is needed across.

Small tickers that occasionally show stats & information is the way to go.

I think you are referring to a DOG (Digital OnScreen Graphic) or bug, as opposed to a "scoreboard"/"scorebox"/"foxBox". A scoreboard is what i look at wehn I attend a game. And Daktronics makes the bests ones.

As for DOG, personally I like the NFLN one followed by the ESPN College football one. Monday Night Football has too much at the bottom of the screen and it gets more jumbled when not on an HD set such as when I am at the gym.

The Monday Night Football one isn't bad when you have an HDTV.

I think with baseball you need the full screen one. I like being able to see the pitch count, the runners on base, the speed of the pitch etc...

For basketball like the TNT scoreboard all you need to see is the score and the time so it is easier. For Hockey the local FSN ones they have score and time and the small also works. For the NFL they do not need the full screen, but just enough for the downs score and time. I have to say though I hate how CBS and other channels do not have the timeouts below the score. After watching the ESPN games the three yellow dashes really are a nice touch compared to the CBS scoreboard without them.

The thing that annoys me is watching an ESPN HDTV broadcast where the game wasn't filmed in HD, and they have those huge ESPNHD bars on either side.

Other people do that, mainly NFL Network and Comcast SportsNet (at least in Chicago)

I like the new FSN scoreboards, but will be interesting to see how they use them in baseball, since those are brand new. CSN is now using the Bay Area's graphics nationwide so that's not much of a surprise there.

As far as football, NFL Network and CBS are my favorites.

That can still be presented in a condensed form, as they were on ESPN and WGN until only recently.

I have to say though I hate how CBS and other channels do not have the timeouts below the score.

They're just timeouts. They'll tell you about them when you need to know.

Good place as any, so here goes....

I have a real problem with the tv generated on field graphics in the NFL. Every year they add and "enhance" something unnecessarily, it's becoming overkill in my mind.

I grew to like the yellow first down line. It really does help to clarify roughly where the marker is, and I can't imagine watching a game without it.

However.

I don't need the stupid blue line. If I don't know where the the team was in the first place, I should change the channel. I understand its the NFL's way of selling its game to everyfan, but enough already.

My biggest beef is the down and distance marker. Again, helpful for two seconds....and then YOU LEAVE IT ON THE FIELD. Amazing plays being made by amazing players and there's a giant "3rd & 8" virtual team-colored arrow, that never goes away. Really annoying.

I've always prefered a scorebox in the corner of the screen, rather than a bar across the top or bottom. It seems less intrusive.

As for baseball, ESPN's old scorebox in the corner was quite effective and compact. The bar is too big.

My favorite, however, was the old MSG Network scorebox for Yankees game, before the YES Network was invented. They had the two teams abbreviated with their scores, of course, and the number for the inning to the right. But the inning number wasn't centered - it was lined up with whatever team was batting, top or bottom, like this:

CLE 1 6

NYY 3

or

DET 2

NYY 7 4

Under the home team was the count line, 3-2 2 OUT, or whatever, and the baserunners were in words under that on the very bottom line - no illustrated diamond. For example: RUNNER ON 2ND or 1ST AND 3RD or BASES LOADED.

I prefer it on the bottom if it's a screen to screen bar. Also at least "appreciate" how CBS attempts to fade it out on the edges, unlike ESPN who just makes it solid black.

Was that typical in for their SEC broadcasts, or a new thing that they are hoping to spread to their other broadcasts? I'd hate for CBS to lose the box, but that's mostly because I don't care for bars.

College football always had the bar across the top this season on CBS. NFL retained the box from prior seasons.
