2009 NFL Off-Season Thread

Time to defend one of my (fantasy) players:

What else do Lions fans want to hear Kevin Smith say? "We're gonna suck mightily, but please buy Lions tickets despite most of you folks losing jobs!"?

I'm not saying the Lions are heading to the playoffs, but did anyone expect the 1-15 Dolphins to make the playoffs the next season, or the 16-0 Patriots to not make the playoffs the following year?

Plus, the Lions are in a division that was relatively weak in 2008. A 9-7 record very well could win the NFC North.

That is EXACTLY why I'm not dismissing this as crazy talk. The NFL's landscape can change on the drop of a dime, this could damn well happen.

I love the heart here, and I do have some hopes for this season, but really, playoffs?
On his personal blog, Smith34.com, Detroit Lions running back Kevin Smith(notes) predicted, no wait, promised the Lions will make the NFL Playoffs in 2009. It makes you wonder, did he watch the video tape?

"I won't make a prediction about how many games we're going to win, but I will say this: We will definitely make the playoffs this season.

"Believe it or not we weren't far off last year. Almost every game we could have won, we were one play or one player short. Except for Tennessee on Thanksgiving, they just came out and beat us to sleep. They manhandled us, but nobody else did.''

The Lions weren't far off? They were 0-16.

The Lions have made a bunch of good off season moves that aren't necesarily top headline material, but I do think the Lions are pretty well set up for 2009, bearing made how bad 2008 was. I think Culpepper can lead the offense pretty well for a lot of 2009 and take the pressure off Stafford's progression, I think the defense in particular has upgraded significantly. And Schwartz has impressed me as a coaching appointment do far. Seems a good guy, so far quietly going about getting a half decent team together.

The playoffs? Well who knows, why shouldn't they finish ahead of the Vikings and Packers for certain, and the Bears I think are putting a lot of faith in what a new QB can do for your team!

HBO Hard Knocks series to focus on the Bengals this season. Wow so exciting.

If you want dysfunction and drama, they couldn't have picked a better club.

a ton of people will tune in hoping for that and it won't happen. I'm predicting a huge letdown.

I know exactly what you guys are saying?but as a Bengals fan, I'm effing STOKED.

I'm a Cowboys fan and I wish they'd go away. Buyer beware.

True that, yo. Hopefully the entire team won't get arrested on camera. Bastards.

Mike Vick leaves prison undetected by media.

LMAO. How do you miss that? Reporters at both exits.

Really, really simple Flame. Get the hell out of there at 4 in the morning when all Good reporters should be sleeping.

Now, it's off to Hampton, Virginia and two months in house confinement (Whatever the hell that means).

#1: lmao. Nice job getting him out at that time so that there wouldn't be a media frenzy. Last thing they want is to have the media and crazy ass PETA staked out waiting to hound the man as he's released.

#2: lol @ Drew becoming the new Flame now. I guess the torch has been passed. :(

And naw man. You still have the Atlanta CCSLC torch. I'm just second in command.

I'm glad, Vick deserved to go to jail, but the Justice system now says he paid his debt so let him get on with his life, and the media wanting to make a circus failed.

I agree. It's the reason I'll remain a Vick fan. He paid his debt, now it's time to get back to work.

There's parking everywhere. Ample is the word I'd use to describe it?seemingly every business within a three-block area shuts down and rents out their lot.
