I wish they could come up with a way (and why can't they?) to make this work and match up:

There are only so many colors available for coating the facemask. Metallic gold is not one of them. They could however, use the same paint as used on the helmet and paint the facemask. The problem with this approach is the wear and tear of the regular season taking it's toll on the paint job. Does anyone remember Ken Anderson's old two bar BD9 facemask after a few games with it painted black?

Triple-thin-white UCLA or USC stripe would have solved the stripe problem nicely.

The solution they chose sucks.

What's worse, is that it's carried over to the replicas, where it's not needed. They could (should) have had one version for the on-field uniforms, and another for the replicas, so that they wouldn't appear totally stupid while being worn.

The better solution would have been to not change, but too late for that.

Yikes. They either need to change the facemask to red or the outline from black to white for this to work. As is it looks really mix and match.

I don't understand what they were thinking there. 90% of the on field Pittsburgh Steelers jerseys have stripes that are cut off by the short sleeve yet none of the replicas appear that way. If I'm a 49ers fan then I'd just buy one of the throwback replicas they sold last season. Maybe if a lot of people do the same then they'll get the message.

That's a really good point, McCarthy.

BTW, I give the 49ers a B+

I think these stripes are going to grow on people a whole lot, and you will see a team or two copycat what the Niners did in the next few years. Just a really cool feature about this update.

Since people are throwing grades around like they're Mel Kiper Jr. or something, and saying this update gets a D because of the facemask color, I'm giving it an A+. The 49ers organization and most of the fanbase can't find anything to not like about the new uniform.

I'm guessing the angled stripes were made to make the stripes appear straight with the pads on. On the throwbacks from last season, they appeared slanted.

If that indeed was the thought process behind the design, then I change my grade to an A+

Why doesn't the NFL just start selling their replicas with sleeve lengths that are comparable to the ones the players actually wear? Not lineman who almost don't have sleeves, but say QBs.

It'd make the whole transition thing quite a bit better.

Regardless, the 49ers over-thought the sleeve stripes. They should have just simply moved them up.

Another look at just how ridiculous these sleeve stripes look. Actually, it kind of looks like a little bit of an adidas mark now. Not out of the question that it might be intentional, considering the manufacturer.

Yeah, that's just an EA goof. They don't have the facemask color right either, and that face looks nothing like Crabtree's. I trust that the stripes will look "right" on the field on Sundays.

That looks more like Darren McFadden that Michael Crabtree.

Back to my comment about my theory behind the angling of the stripes, I believe that they did it to attempt to replicate how the stripes were straight across on the long-sleeved 80's jersey. So, they attempted to replicate that look by angling the stripes on the cap sleeved jerseys to make them appear straight with pads on.
