How Good Will the ATL Falcons be in 2009?

Ok, ATL went 11-5 last year and was never out of any game they lost. Matt Ryan was wayyy above average for a rookie with an 87.7 rating....3440 yards passing and a 61% completion percentage. Michael Turner had one of the best running back campaigns of last year...Roddy White has developed into one of the best and for those who dont track him...one of the most unique receivers in the game.

Jerious Norwood is one of the most overlooked playmakers in the NFL. He brings the same type of excitement and home run ability that Vick did...if not more!! Everytime he touches the ball the stadium holds their breath...and it seems like Norwood refuses to score touchdowns unless they are more than 50 yards long. ATL only allowed 17 sacks last year!! That might be the best stat of them all.

Now we have Tony Gonzo...so basically we have a top qb, wr, te, two cornerstone tailbacks and a stud offensive line. The defense is the only issue. Like we did at offense last year with the releases of dunn, crumpler, and gandy...the defense lost brooking, boley, foxworth, milloy and grady jackson  . Jackson will be raplced by Peria Jerry. Milloy will be replaced with rookie William Moore. Foxworth will be replaced with Chris Houston, who is one of the most talented yet risky corners out there...and Brooking will be raplced with stud linebacker Mike Peterson, who quietly led one of the best defenses of the past few years down in Jacksonville.

I am scared about the defense, b/c Brian Van Gorder admitted that the defense won with smoke and mirrors last year. The new starters on D will be younger and wayyy more talented but less experienced.

So in ATL we have one of the scariest offenses... in a good way.... with one of the scariest defenses...in a bad way. ATL has to play the NFC West and the AFC East this year. How good do yall think they will be? CBS sportsline has them listed at #3 in the power rankings...behind NE and Pitt. ESPN has them all the way at 11. So, it doesnt appear anyone can figure the Falcons out.

What do yall think

In the past few years the Panthers and the Saints have had a big off season or two that have kinda made me a bit uneasy. But as I predicted, they have for the most part fallen flat on their faces after those big off seasons. As a Buccaneers fan, this Falcons team scares me. Not only did they keep a LOT of last years team around, but they also signed depth and brought in the smartest Tight End in the game. That D is gonna have to play even better than they did last year, and last year they went absolutely bananas.

I believe it is against the NFL rules for the Falcons to have two consecutive winning seasons.

1- You are one injury away at a skill position on offense, all teams, for your season to fall apart.

2- Training camp has not even started. Calm down.

3- See #1.

4-While you play who you play, four of their 11 wins came against the following: Detroit, Oakland, St. Louis, and Kansas City.

Matt Ryan had a very good rookie season, but he is with Cutler, Romo and Palmer in terms on where they fit. Meaning, there are a group of QBs who I would take or trade Ryan to get: Peyton, Eli, Brady, McNabb, Brees, Rivers, Roethlisberger and Warner. That's 25% of the league.

White and Turner also have to prove that they can repeat their performances from last season. There is change with in their division, so they may run onto the field with the better talent at least six times a season.

It totally depends on the defense. If Brent Grimes ends up as a starting corner, they're screwed. Brent Grimes is 5' 10" and that's generous. The front should be good, depending on how Jerry ends up being. The linebackers are solid, even without Brooking and Boley.

If the defense is good, this team's winning the division. If not, we're eking into the playoffs.

Either way, that whole thing about "no back-to-back winning seasons" SHOULD end this upcoming season.

They did very well last season, although it was noted they lost every game in which they didn't score first. (And held true in the playoffs, when the Cardinals scored first and defeated them.) I think they have a good chance at winning the NFC South this year, ahead of the Panthers.

If it helps, don't look for much of a challenge from the Buccaneers this year... <_<

I believe the Falcons will win the division. I think they are a better team than last year. I don't know about Super Bowl, but I think they have a great chance to go deep into the playoffs this year

I will be happy with 9 wins this season, even if that means no playoffs.

I absolutely hate that distinction....

Factors helping the Falcons-

Weak division.

Fairly stable team.

Decent coach.

Good young QB

Good defense

Factors counting against the Falcons

A lot of unknowns in their division (Will the Saints get hot this year, will the Buccs come back stronger this year, can the Panthers move forward?)

No major upgrade to their team. (Someone will probably shoot me down on that one, but I am not sure they have really moved the tream forward so far this off season)

A lot of sophomore curses working against them!

A tougher schedule for 09 than they had in 08

Overall I find the Falcons one of the hardest 2008 playoff teams to predict going forward.

Personally my feeling is that the Buccs have done badly this off season, but the Panthers and Saints are both in a position to challenge the Falcons in the Division. I think the 9-7 not in the playoffs call might in the end be a good one.

I gotta tell ya, I feel the same way. 9-7 no playoffs = happy TFoA. 9-7 w/ playoffs = ecstatic TFoA. Division winners = TFoA has heart attack. :P

But seriously, I just want them to have a wining season. For the love of God, end this damn streak!

The Falcons added Tony Gonzalez, which can only help the offense that was already pretty potent last year.

The Falcons didn't make that many moves in the offseason, but at the same time, the Falcons didn't need major upgrading. Plus, no team in the NFC South made major upgrades, at least none that are coming to mind.

I'm not worried about the schedule, since the division plays essentially the same schedule.
