Prokhorov: Nets to change name for 2012 Brooklyn move

Knights seems super-generic because it's probably the most self-evident sports team name not represented in the four leagues or with any college programs of significance. "Wildcats" is the next one on the list but there are a few of those in the college ranks.

So knights is generic because no one uses it?

No, it's used by major-junior hockey teams, AAA baseball teams, a handful of college teams (I can't think of which offhand but I know there are Knights), and numerous high school teams. I'm sure there are tons of Vikings and Panthers out there, but those at least have a big one that's top of mind.

I know what he's saying. I feel like every single sports movie ever (that doesn't use real teams) has a team called the Knights. Can't use a pro team name, what do you use? Knights! Wildcats! It does just feel generic.

That said, I think Brooklyn Knights is a great name, and thats what they should go with. I don't mind generic if it works.

Edit: Knights is my preference if they are changing names. But I still don't see whats wrong with the Brooklyn Nets. It rhymes with Jets and Mets!

Jets and Mets are at least aren't named after equipment. That's the difference.

And your point is...?

Nets is a fine name. There's no rule against being named after equipment, just like there's no rule against being named after aircraft or after an abbreviation of "Metropolitans."

Knights is a better name (although it depends whether a Brooklynites pun is a plus or minus) and Nets was kinda lame from day one...but now it's established and Brooklyn Nets is as good as New Jersey Nets.

A lot of it comes down to total rebrand vs continuity.

I still argue that the current color schemes is great for Brooklyn but awful for New Jersey or New York Nets. The New Jersey New York Nets identity was the gaudy stripes and bright r/w/b, not the more subdued colors they currently use. A Brooklyn team's identity is old timey nostalgia, mainly about the Dodgers. The current gray, darker blue, and a touch of red happen to be colors of the Brooklyn Dodger's uniforms.

Bring back the gray alternates/ road - take a simple template, throw on a blue "Brooklyn" baseball style cursive wordmark, and you have a perfect road uniform or alternate (that is practically a Brooklyn Dodgers crossover concept.)

On the topic of colors and wordmark, this promo for Jay-Z's announcement is currently on the Nets' website:

The "MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT" font and black and blue color scheme has been used previously on billboards around the borough, and the Nets' Brooklyn website.

Hopefully they change their look to something thats really unique in the NBA. I think a light blue and navy would really help them stand out from the rest of the league.

"Nets" would be a silly name if it didn't come about to match the Mets and Jets. Within this context, however, what else would you call New York's second basketball team. I like it, and sometimes lament that we couldn't name the Islanders the Pets. Bearing this in mind, "New York Nets" is the only sensible name, as any other location scuttles the continuity of the B-team nomenclature, and you're better off casting a wide net (ugh) over the tri-state area and not trying to milk the Brooklyn nostalgia teat dry. Also, "Brooklyn Ballers" is stupid.

Admiral, "Brooklyn" is too valuable, monetarily, not to use.

I also think you're wrong as to why that is. It's not nostalgia. If anything, it's capitalizing on the hipster trend that's made my particular borough a marketable quantity in its own right.

There was a Forbes report a while back that said when they put "Brooklyn" on the jerseys, their marketability goes right up near the top. Another "New York" team wouldn't necessarily do that, certainly not as dramatically.

If at all. There's already way too many logos with "NY" in it. But there would only be one "Brooklyn", so there's absolutely no competition on that front.

And like you said, Brooklyn's a big name right now. Hipsters and gentrification is one thing, but its also a huge name in hip-hop culture, and conjures up the most borough pride out of all the boroughs in NYC. So they would be dumb to not to take advantage of that.

all of that is worth considering...but is it too much to ask to at least have an actual NET in the damn logo???? Maybe I'm reading a little too much into the name, but if they are going to ignore the net then please don't include a rim in the new logo...thats all I'm saying

Sarcasm, right?

Well maybe they could distinguish themselves from the other teams Lights Out mentioned if they added an all black alt.
