Prokhorov: Nets to change name for 2012 Brooklyn move

I've always gotten the impression that of the nine New York teams, the Knicks commanded the biggest percentage of the market. Even the Jets and Mets fans I know like the Knicks. I know Isles fans who like the Knicks. The Knicks bring everyone together.

I think the Yankees might have something to say about that. I could be wrong, but that's what ive noticed anyway.

I meant per sport. If you made four pie graphs, one for each league, the Knicks' share vis-a-vis the Nets' would dwarf the respective shares of the other three A-teams.

Not even close to the Knicks. Mets Yankees is much more like Jets Giants, both are more geographic in nature (Brooklyn/Queens/LI as opposed to Manhattan/Bronx/NJ/CT etc. As mentioned earlier, the Knicks pretty much dominate, but the Nets are set to gain Brooklyn once they're established there for a decade or so.

Because of the Yankees success they've gained a larger percentage of the market to offset some of the regional differences. But the Jets own Long Island.

I don't see what a patriotic RWB w/ stars theme has to do with Nets, though I accept the nostalgic charm of the uniform in question.

Its team history and tradition. Its branding that carried over from their origins as the New York/New Jersey Americans, playing as the flagship NY team of the American Basketball Association, which was a league that was known for its patriotic flair (with R/W/B basketballs and all)

Its similar to the Oakland Athletics being represented by an elephant, or Vancouver Canucks having a whale/shark thingie on their logo. The nickname doesn't have to always match the branding. If there is history or real life meaning to the branding, it still works.

perhaps a sneak at the BK Nets unis (from NBA 2K12):

Wizards won't have that logo on there court, just the script. Maybe fan made?

Are you sure about that, though? I mean we saw the practice court, but are you completely sure that they're using that as the regular court? With all of the trends that are constantly being set in the NBA, I wouldn't be surprised if a team chose to have different practice and regular courts.

I imagine that's because they were the only basketball team with New York in their name (after the New York Nets moved to New Jersey, that is). No one who lives in New York would openly admit to rooting for a team named New Jersey. So even if the New Jersey Nets are in the same metropolitan area, the New York Knicks were the only team to root for as a New Yorker. The move to Brooklyn should change that.

Hate that they stuck with the Nets name though. It worked when you had an alliterative name like New Jersey Nets or New York Nets.. Brooklyn should have a team name starting with B, like the Brooklyn Ballers.

According to the NY Daily News the Yankees are #1. 32% consider the Yankees their favorite team while the Knicks were at 5%.

He means where the Knicks rank among NY's pro basketball teams, not against every single pro team in every sport.

Sorry to threadjack, but I am confused by your post. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the article stated this about the Yankees:

Twenty-eight percent ranked the Yankees as their favorite sports team
Among baseball teams, 83% said the Yankees were New York's team, compared to 12% who listed the Mets

Also, I couldn't find any references to the Knicks, Nets, or basketball.

Exactly. But that's about to change.

I don't know about that. The Knicks are (somehow) one of the most storied franchises in the NBA. They are starting to get their act together again. Sure, the Nets will get some buzz, and sell out a lot of games if they can get out of their perpetual rebuilding stage, but they aren't going to take any significant market share away from the Knicks. It would take a few generations (and super-Dolanian acts) to put the Nets closer to the Knicks longterm.

The Knicks are a moribund franchise if there ever was one. The only reason they still control the market is because they don't have any competition.

I can't tell you the last time I heard anybody talking about them. Even my basketball-crazy friends are more likely to talk about football during the season.

I see Knicks gear around town, but not much. I see more Lakers/Celtics/Hornets caps etc. collectively than I do Knickerbockers. I suspect the Knicks stuff I do see is as much about fashion as anything, as are a lot of the others.

Will the Knicks come back? Certainly. But there's a whole lotta room for a new team to come in and claim a significant percentage of New York. The die-hards will remain with the Knicks, but I think the Nets can carve off a significant percentage of the existing casual fans, in addition to whatever new fans they can convert.

Doesn't make much sense to use the recoloured logo on your court when you can use the script or the alt logo. I think they'll go the Jazz way and just keep the old one as official primary so they don't have to pay the fee.

There sure was a lot of buzz about the Knicks when Stoudemire was signed, they went on that 13-1 run and had that crazy game with the Celtics, traded for Melo, and for the first 2 games of the playoff.

I definitely do not see more Celtics/Lakers stuff than Knicks gear, but I have have to say there is a lot of Charlotte Hornets gear, but nowhere near as much as Knicks gear, but I don't remember the last time I saw nets gear. I don't think there are that many casual, easily swayed knicks fans, because MSG was always loud even during the Thomas era. Adding to that, the Knicks play a much more enjoyable brand of basketball than the Nets, since most of their games are 110-104 shootouts.

There were a lot more Knicks jerseys back in their glory days (even with no championships) back in the 90's, just like there were actually a lot of Nets jerseys in the early 00's when they were good. Yes, even in NYC. NY'ers are notorious bandwagoners in most parts (there were plenty of Mets gear in 2006 and almost none today for example), perhaps due to having more than one team in most sports, so polls taken today don't really matter much IMO. Things will probably change once the Nets move to Brooklyn, although a lot of that would probably depend on whether they continue losing

Seems like it would make financial sense to use the Brooklyn name/script on the front of every jersey (home, away, alt, etc.). I don't see people outside of New York going crazy to buy stuff with Nets on the front but if it says Brooklyn, it will be a top seller.

Any ideas if they will go this route and only have Brooklyn on the jerseys?
