2010-11 NHL Season Thread

Still MIGHTY

Recommended Posts

I don't think I've ever been more pleased by attending a Blue Jackets game, which is made even better by the fact that the night started out about as poorly as it could have.

A group of guys (about 10 dudes) who I know from college and who are still in college texted me at 3:30 and told me they were going to the Jackets game that night. They all live in Athens which is about an hour and a half drive from Columbus. I made plans to meet them outside the ticket booth and we'd all go to the game together.

The morons that I call my friends left in three cars and all without tickets. One car made it to Columbus at a reasonable 5:45, the other two didn't leave Athens until 5:45 so only three guys actually made it to the 7:00 puck drop. Even if they had managed to get from Athens to Columbus in an hour and fifteen minutes there wouldn't have been any cheap tickets at 7 left to buy.

My work went long so I wasn't able to get to the arena until 6:45. By then all the tickets were gone. With most of my buddies at a bar on the other side of town, being downtown 30 minutes from home, and not being able to sit with the guys who were in the arena I decided that I still wanted to get inside. I bought a ticket from a scalper (something I've only done once before) for $40, which I thought was a steal for where the number on the ticket said.

this is where I sat

So I sat alone and felt admittedly lame for being by myself, but the people around me were incredibly knowledgeable about the game and were fun to talk to. They were completely understanding and were honestly more fun to watch the game with than my friends would've been.

The Jackets quickly buried themselves in a 2-0 hole within 8 minutes and were getting it taken to them by Phoenix. They responded with 5 unanswered goals. 3 by Matt Calvert for the natural hat trick and the Blue Jackets won a big game 5-3. The building was packed and the atmosphere was incredible. It reminded me of the games from the pre-lockout Nationwide Arena.

The W (briefly) moved the Blue Jackets ahead of Anaheim and with a win over Nashville on Sunday they'll join the 70 point party. This team is on fire, something I don't think I've ever been able to say about them.

Just got back from the Anaheim Ducks-Minnesota Wild game. Theodore was really good, Dan Ellis was good in his Ducks debut, but the Ducks were so disappointing.

The Ducks are a pathetic team saved by a very, very good goaltender who isn't playing. You trade for an average at best goaltender, sign a headcase for a goaltender, trade away a defenseman, and killed the chemistry you had. Great moves. It's no wonder they signed their GM to a 4 year contract extension!!! Can y'all not do anything right? Seriously? I have tickets to the last two games of the year (Kings at Ducks and Ducks at Kings) and I was hoping they'd be fighting for playoff positioning or even as luck might have it, be locked into playing against each other so I could see this rivalry blow the roof off the rest of the NHL and hell a couple line brawls would be nice. I wouldn't mind seeing Kevin Westgarth knock that ridiculous porn mustache off of George Parros... oh wait, Kevin Westgarth has no clue what he's doing let alone what friggin' sport he plays! Never mind on that last thought.

I think its a very good, shrewd move by Sather, giving up a marginal prospect and a draft pick for some veteran help for the youngest blueline in the league.

To NY Rangers

D Bryan McCabe

To Florida

F Tim Kennedy

3rd Round Pick

Florida now has 10 picks in the upcoming draft.

Considering what the Leafs got for Beauchemin, Panthers got ripped off.

McCabe is UFA after this year, Beauchemin has another year left on his contract. I think that explains the difference.

I know he returned the the Kings lineup on Wednesday, but is Sturm really 100% healthy?

Says the conditioning is good just getting back into game shape I guess is the thing.

Well, he did miss a boat load of games due to knee tendinitis in the knee he just had surgery on. So, I doubt he's 100% healthy. I don't think he'll be 100% healthy until next year. Can he play? Absolutely. He had 9 points in 17 games and played well. So it's a good pick up of a role player for the Caps.

Leafs lose to the Pens in a shootout, but are now only three points out of 8th in the East with a Carolina loss in regulation.

However, Leafs fans will eventually need to find a new excuse for wanting Brian Burke dead after the Leafs go 82-0 in any of the upcoming seasons....

The Avalanche haven't had a game were they allowed less than 3 goals since January 14th against the Wild (A total of 17 games). And in that stretch of games they've only won 3 of them (2 against the Blues and one in OT against the Canucks). Their goaltending/defense is just pathetic.

If I'm a Blue Jackets fan, I'm pissed about that absolutely horrible call today. Utter BS. The puck was clearly in, the side net bulges, its in! 9 minutes later and Toronto decides that they cant see the puck so its not there. Ridiculous. Only in the goddamned NHL.
