Is anyone objecting to the black thread because it's period-inaccurate?

I thought we were objecting because it's ugly and looks cheap.

For some, it's because it looks cheap. For some, it's because it's period-inaccurate. For others, it's both.

For all the people complaining about New Era taking the easy way out by sewing the front-pannelled with black thread instead of using white, New Era has been doing this for awhile.

Exposcooperstown.jpgWhiteSoxcooperstown.jpg

Expos and White Sox Cooperstown Collection caps, straight from the Lids website.

Disgraceful. How can they not do anything about it after all the gripes they have undoubtedly heard by now? And another thing - why do they have to put the annoying NE flag logo on the side of all the Cooperstowns? The current on-field ones they sell don't have that. That really bothers me.

Agree entirely. It just goes to show that New Era's bottom line is more important then the quality of their caps. For 34-36 dollars, I expect better.

Also, New Era needs their logo on the side of their non-current-gamers. I mean, who else makes the fitted authentic MLB caps? How would you know it's them? [note the sarcasm]

The White Sox never wore the full logo on their caps. They just wore SOX.

Regardless, the point is still valid.

I actually have an original white sox panel and an original Blue Jays white panel and they actually used clear plastic thread on those.

So perhaps this is a more recent trend for New Era?

Yes, New Era is incredibly cheap when it comes to their caps. They can't bear to part with a few more cents to use white thread for the white panel.

As for the logo on the side, it doesn't bother me too much. Although you could use a seam ripper to take it off, or at least this is what others have been able to do.

You're preaching to the choir, Quillz. New Era has to know that it pisses people off.

Not everyone (like me) has a seam ripper, and either way it's still New Era infringing on a classic design immortalized by the Cooperstown Collection for some useless logo creep.

If you have two dollars and those things called stores in your town, in sure you could locate a seam ripper quick enough.

I think I'd prefer it without the black stitching, but it doesn't really ruin it for me, I still love the new cap.

For the record, the Orioles very first white panel, made by AJD Cap Company, did indeed have the black stitching:

This was used from 1975 to about 1978 or so, 100% Nylon.

This Roman Pro, that they used for a year or two, did not:

But it appears that the stitching on the black panels may be white, too. This one is 100% wool.

And finally this New Era, which was used from about 1979-1988:

Also 100% Nylon, this one actually had clear Nylon stitching throughout.

I took the NE logo off of two caps I have, and I have used a seam ripper before for stripping jerseys to have them recustomized. Not only was it VERY difficult to do, as there are many curves and small parts, but you can clearly see the full outline of where the logo used to be. I actually ruined one of my caps by putting the tip of the seamripper through the wool a few times. As for the other cap, I wet it and have worn it since, but the material still shows where the logo was. Also, the material behind the logo is very thin and worn out due to the stitching process.

Haha, probably. I've just never had the need too, until the New Era logos on the Cooperstown Collection and MiLB caps started annoying me recently. I'll purchase one soon enough. :)

So the stitching has never been really consistent on the Cartoon Bird caps. Interesting.

You know, New Era could just make it easier for all of us by not freaking including their freaking logo on 99% of their caps.

Von Glitschka's take on the Orioles logo. now this is how its done! http://drawsigner.com/2011/11/23/fowl-ball/

Wow. Now I won't be able to look at the original without seeing all its problems.

Huge upgrade all around. Particularly the squatchee. And the orange line separating bird and cap is organic, not tacked-on like the white one.

But since he was fixing the mistakes, did he really have to keep the apostrophe catastrophe?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who looked for that.

This is a really nice fix/update to a logo that just shouldn't exist. :P

Interesting redesign, but to be fair, the Orioles new logo, in its embroidered form on the cap, looks much better than the graphic version, as more lines show up in the detail of the raised embroidery:

I like the orange hash separating the cap from the head and the lower beak outline. Everything else is worse.

you've got to be kidding? you don't see the terrible line weight consistency and botched perspective in the current one?

lol, i'm all for detail, but no. Maybe I don't want to because I just like what it is...

There's something charming about the fact the Oriole's eyes are exactly the same size. Perspective botched? Sure. Does it detract from the logo? No.

That is very nice! Makes the new logo look too simple.

Sometimes simple is better for a logo though.

At first glance, I thought it looked really cool. But the more I look at it (and looking at it side-by-side with the real one), I think I like the one they went with better. But good effort.

I like aspects of it... the brim of the hat, the button, the eyes not being the same size, but then again, I also like the eyes being the same size on the real one. For some reason, it works. Also, I like how the real one looks more like the old versions, but still different.

I don't know... it's hard to describe what I don't like about it... it almost looks too kid-like, kinda reminds of this guy in that way:

Nothin' beats ol' Crazy Eyes though!
