Looks like my alma mater is getting a new look after all... Not sure I like it. Definitely miss the old logo already.

NAU just posted this on their Instagram: http://instagram.com/p/nQgx9xsoIg/

Who is the manufacturer? I like that uniform a lot, and the logo looking like an ax blade i like a lot too

The uniforms look like they belong to a AFL team.

I'm assuming Adidas based on the gloves, but I have no idea. The axe logo is just boring IMO, doesn't really fit the school either.

Feels very templated and generic.

Would've liked to see them actually appreciate the history of the team by bringing a gold helmet back and using some unique striping (http://i1109.photobucket.com/albums/h439/doughouvener/Big%20Sky%20Rebrand/NAU1.pnglike this concept I did 2 years ago...)

EDIT: thanks for posting that, Matt. I can handle the word mark without the axe, but that lumberjack logo is BLAGH.

Check out the NAU website for the rebranding. The football uniforms look more like Michigan's alternates when viewed straight on. The other sports have the adidas logo on them

That's a great look for the Lumberjacks. Much better than the look they had before. It almost makes me wanna head up to Flagstaff for one of their games next season.

If Nike's to blame for anything it's that they created this current market for new, flashy, recruit-friendly uniform designs -- not to mention the idea of clubs having an entire multi-component, mix-and-match wardrobe.

That's all on them.

As for the rest of it, they're culpable, but their clients don't have to say yes.

I know we've had this discussion over and over... who's to blame, the manufacturer or the client, blah blah. And I've said this before, but I'll say it again. YES, we know the school has the right/ability/responsibility to say no to any design that doesn't work. But in a real world situation, think about it. You hire this major corporation, supposedly the best in the world, to handle this for you. You TRUST them to do this right. And they ARE the experts, right? If Nike (THE name in uniform design) comes to an AD and his coaches (who are obviously NOT experts in the aesthetics of sports design) and tells them this is what you need is the school really to blame for believing and trusting them?

The analogy I've used before... let's say you hire someone to handle your wardrobe, pay them a ton of money because everyone says they're the best. And then they dress you in a lime green tux, and tell you its the next big thing, you're ahead of the curve (lighter, faster, the kids will love it). YES, ultimately its your own damn fault for leaving the house like that. But can you honestly say the "expert" is totally without blame.

Nike has created their own mythology... they've made a world where something is an awesome design just because they say so. And, sure, you can say that's their job, to perpetuate their own brand. But shouldn't their number one concern be to meet the needs of their clients? Why is that so crazy? Part of me feels like giving all the blame for bad design on the schools is like saying a nice looking woman who gets harrassed is "asking for it"... why can't they trust Nikadidasarmor to just give them their best?

Nice try on placing the blame on Nike and not the client. I don't give a rat's behind whether it's the next hottest thing, or whatever someone tells you, the client has the FINAL say so, and it is the CLIENT'S fault if they look stupid. If someone tells you that looking stupid is the next hippest thing and you do it, don't blame the person for your lack of intelligence in being able to think and figure out something looks stupid. The client is responsible for how they look, and that's where it begins and ends. You hire a firm to design something for you, if you don't like it, you don't have to accept it. There is something called an "out clause". The biggest problem in college sports, is you have unimportant people making important decisions and that is the biggest problem in life also.

I dont think so man, thats very one sided. OSV had it right, Nike is the expert here ( i say that loosely) and are hired because if their skill and knowledge that the schools dont have. Or at least the design is turned over to them because of the contracts. Nike is not executing orders from the school, they are creating new things based on what the school is looking for. It is absolutely a partnership and Nike is creating what they feel is best for the school.

Looking through everything now, there's 3 things I dislike:

- The home jersey. Not a fan of the shoulders on this one, it throws off the color balance for me.

- The axe shape around the wordmark. The wordmark itself is solid, and I like the nod to the Peak there, but the axe seems forced to me.

- The lumberjack logo, because duh.

The soccer/volleyball/track applications look solid IMO. Just feels like they missed a good opportunity for football. Every alum I've talked to today said they weren't a fan of the new look because it didn't feel like NAU -- suppose they're just looking to appeal to a bigger audience with this change.

Indiana State just unveiled their new look for 2014 today.

For comparison, here's the style they've used the past few seasons.

So they went from being Illinois to UCF?

Also, they couldn't have just put the uniform on an actual player instead of on a computer rendering?

i got some bad news...

kiw1yuqmpx82omfc.jpg

numbers are on one side of the helmet

what is the honest issue with the numbers on one side and a logo? Can someone please explain it without ripping me a new one?

It's not so much a case of a bad visual as much as it is a case of an unnecessary one. Extraneous helmet numbers don't do anything besides take up space where your primary identifier should be highlighted.

Has anyone heard anything about Oregon's 2014 set? I'd imagine they'd be based on the Alamo Bowl set since they also introduced a black uniform as well. I'm also wondering if the thunder green (these looked pretty bad after the mallard numbers were banned) and white 2 uniforms will be retired for this literation especially if the military uniforms are worn again.

From what was said at the unveil is that the two uniforms would be added to the existing set, probably my replacing the black and white unis, no news on if they will be creating a full new set for all the possible combos with the new template but i honestly dont see them not making new uniforms. The mallard numbers weren't banned as far as I know, and all their current sets should transfer over to the new template without too many issues

Rutgers had the template before UCF copied it . I hate the cookie-cutter template also .
