Question: If a pitcher/catcher's doing an intentional walk, is it legal for the batter to take a hack at it anyway, like if the pitcher screwed up and didn't go outside enough?

Madison Bumgarner just hit a grand slam. You read that right, a pitcher hit a grand slam.

5 RBIs for Bum, and the first grand slam hit by a Giants pitcher since 2000. What a beast!

Giants offense this year has gone off to a really hot start so far...

Hopefully their defense can step up now too!

Same to half of our pitching rotation. Bumgarner is stellar, Cain has been struggling badly as of late, Hudson's pitching spectacularly, Lincecum is struggling here and there, and Vogey's alright.

The Giants can live with a few rough pitching performances here and there from Lincecum, Vogelsong, and even Cain. It's a long season, so those kinda days are to be expected. But what they absolutely cannot live with is Pablo hucking a slow grounder into the fifth row when there's a man on third and two outs. That crap has gotta stop. One thing people don't take into account is just how important defense has been to the Giants. In 2010 and 2012, they won World Series titles just as much on stellar defense as they did on pitching. They're not gonna hit the cover off of the ball, so they've gotta play Tom Emanski style when in the field. The 2011 team (Well, Miguel Tejada, mostly) cost them so many wins due to shoddy defense, and last years team wasn't much better.

So the Dodgers shut out Arizona for the 1st time in Phoenix since 2003.

Carry on...

When was the last time a pitcher connected for a grand slam in an MLB game anyway? Or is the factoid brought up by Bucfan the most recent.

I think Travis Wood got one for the Cubs last season. Not positive of that, though.

I know that Bumgardner is only the sixth or seventh Giants pitcher to hit a grand slam.

EDIT: Yup.

Everything's fine as long as the batter's feet are in the batter's box.

Angels beat the Mets on a walk-off hit-by-pitch in the 11th.

Ibanez got on with a single, got to second on a wild pitch, got to third on a groundout. Mets then intentionally walk Kendrick and Shuck to set up the play at every base. Hank Conger gets up goes up 2-0, swings at two bad pitches at 2-2, and takes one in the ribs for the win.

That baseball. Something new every time.

(Angels also had 17 men left on base. Soooo yay?)

Thank God the rain has come in over St. Louis. Let it flood the place, anything to keep Edwin Jackson from re-taking the mound. Outside of Jeff Samardzija the Cubs pitching staff is riddled with utter trash. Couple good young guys but nobody near ready. Jackson, overpaid as hell, serves no purpose on this team. Much less against a bunch of talented pricks like the Cardinals.

Reds couldn't hit the broad side of a barn if they fell out of a boat with a tennis racket.

Google Image Search had never let me down until the day I queried "barn floating in an ocean."

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫
