If there weren't any doubt on previous ones, the one in Texas, with a 2-3 double play attempt where the catcher clearly caught it and then bobbled it in his throwing hand after cleanly taking it out of his glove, is flat out ridiculous. It's a judgement and should be left to the umpires on the field, not someone sitting in a room hundreds or thousands of miles away. The rule has always been a clean catch is a catch, and once the catch is complete, then the process of removing the ball from the glove is a separate action. Now, without any previous notice or clarification, whoever is in New York doing the review, seems to be allowed to use their own personal judgement on a call. The rule now states that a clean catch includes both the act of catching the ball and transferring it cleanly to the throwing hand. The rule was designed to take judgement calls away at plays in the infield (e.g. at second base during a double play). Umpires are calling these "drops on the transfer" as no catches as the rule states. Yes, there have been some egregious results from this rule change (mostly in plays in the outfield -- which I assume is the source of your rage), but the umpires on the field and in New York are calling and enforcing the rule as it is written.Fangraphs article on the subject. Last year, not a single one of these would've been ruled a dropped ball and it was said the rule was only "clarified" recently, meaning calling them as outs was not incorrect. Elliot Johnson for Cleveland mad a clean catch, took 6 steps, hit the wall and maintained the catch and only dropped it when going to take it out of his glove.
