If we're to ban steroids and amphetamine-laced coffee for health reasons, it's irresponsible not to ban tobacco. Not every personal choice is worth fighting for.

I'm not usually one to take such a hardline stance on personal freedoms (I often times think regulation is for the best), but the difference between tobacco and the substances you just mentioned is that amphetamines and steroids are classified as performance enhancers. Baseball players shouldn't chew tobacco during games out of common sense. But the culture has been there for such a long time and just cutting it off completely in one fell swoop is going to be more difficult than simply banning it, especially considering it's history in baseball and the fact that it's an addictive substance. The fact that the minors ban it is good because it helps to create change in the culture of the game. Less players will use it if it's not so common from young ages. But due to the strength of the union (which I previously mentioned) and due to the fact that these guys DO have the right to personal choice, it's not that simple.

And trying to shame egotistical adult males into not doing something is pretty much the least effective way to establish change.

The thing about "personal choice" is kinda misguided, IMO. I have the personal choice to chew if I want to. But I cannot just walk into a meeting spitting brown crap into a cup. It's not professional. Ballplayers are at work and should look professional. Spitting out big wads of tobacco juice does not come across that way. Few people are allowed to use tobacco while working. Why is that different for one profession that happens to have a lot of people watching?

Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse."

Yeah, trying to equate tobacco use with drug abuse is a bit of a stretch.

And really, I'm not even arguing the merits of the rule. I'm just saying that it is what it is. They've tried to strike the use of smokeless tobacco before and it was met with some pretty heavy resistance. It's not just a simple as banning it, no matter the health concerns.

Absolutely. Baseball doesn't have a right to tell players not to use chew on their free time, but teams absolutely have the right to tell them not to do that while they're visually representing the organization on TV. Baseball isn't a "real world" job, but they have as much right to dictate how player can look (chewing) as my job does to dictate how I can look (not wearing jeans).

On that note, my job is casual on Mondays and Fridays. They update a memo from time to time on acceptable casual wear, and make sure to highlight that bib overalls are not allowed. It always makes me laugh because them putting it on the memo means that at some point, somebody thought it was appropriate to wear bib overalls to an office job.

The Brewers played the Cubs today. One team was dominant on the mound, striking out the other 15 times and pounding home runs with aplomb. The other was atrocious, showing no life and unable to remotely get to the opposing starter.

The lifeless team was the Cubs. Fiers was untouchable while the northsiders had no clue what to do.

Certainly one strange ending to today's Angels/Giants game; the Angels' baserunner on first base got hit by the batted ball to end the game as a 5-4 Giants win.

I didn't see it, but apparently the Dodgers game ended the same way.

This is why I absolutey love baseball. According to an ESPN radio segment I just heard, that's only happened three times in Major League Baseball history (hit runner to end the game). Twice today. Unbelievable.
