The Coyotes are getting out of Glendale. Moving to a more central part of the city will help a lot. 

It's still not downtown PHX, but it's much more central than before. Plus, as you mentioned, it's closer to the money side of town. This should make a big difference in attendance, especially on weeknights. I'm moving to northern Tucson, so I'm a lot more likely to make the trip up.

 

Now, if they could just do better than dead last.

This project is actually two arenas. ~16,000 for the Coyotes and ~4,000 that will serve as the home for ASU and the practice rink for the Coyotes. I'd assume really big games will be played in the main rink as with now at Gila River.

This is the second major mixed-use project which ASU has wanted to replace the Karsten Golf Course, since 2010.

For a few years, they attempted to convince USA Basketball to move their headquarters there along with an Omni Hotel.

So the Coyotes seem to possibly want:

Control of the university land, the university to float the bonds after state approval, student fees and university donors to pay too.

It's going to be on the corner of Rio Salado and McClintock? My goodness, that's basically on the ASU campus (sort of). Right across from Tempe Marketplace, which is basically empty other than a water treatment facility (and a spot I always wished had something there). I'm shocked to say this, but the Yotes look to finally be making a good move with this one. That would've been pretty cool to have while I was there. 

 

Also, if I'm not mistaken, that's smack dab on the new light rail line, too. Why didn't they do this a decade ago? That basically links all of the major entertainment options in Phoenix on the public transportation lines. 

 

 

 

Now watch the D Backs murder it all by moving out to Queen Creek or something.

Theyre right next to each other downtown. About a 15 minute drive or a 30 minute light rail ride west from the ASU campus in Tempe.

It was a former Superfund site after decades of being a landfill. 

 

I still believe that the Coyotes want the Arizona Board of Regents to buy the bonds since they've got better credit.

It's pretty perfect, right? Not that I didn't already go to plenty of Yotes games when I was there too (because they were cheap as hell and I had family within shouting distance of Westgate), but if I could have walked (see: drunkenly stumbled to and from) or taken a cheap cab? I would've sprung for season tickets lol

 

Two blocks from ASU, right next to the Marketplace, right off the 101/202 interchange. (No new light rail there as far as I can tell. There's the Tempe Streetcar coming in 2020, but it doesn't go that far down Rio Salado. Stays in the Mill District. Unless you know something I don't haha.) It's almost all you could want from a demographic access standpoint. College kids (plenty from the Midwest too), majority of the population, majority of the hockey-watching population. If the Coyotes can't make THIS work, then they'll have no one to blame but themselves. No other excuses at that point.

I'll take the under since the parcel of land is university owned, not by the city.  The state legislature is required, not the city.

 

The negotiating agreement between developer and the Coyotes did not require approval from the Arizona Board of Regents.

Yeah, I was trying to picture in my head where the light rail line is and it's further south where the line veers off of University onto Apache. I always get that stretch of Rio Salado and University mixed up because that's where Rio Salado starts to get a little weird. 

 

And you can basically insert any Phoenix outskirts town for Queen Creek (Carefree, Gilbert, Avondale, wherever). Point is, if the arena gets built there, all of the Phoenix teams have a pretty good spot they call home (even the Cards out in Glendale, because that actually works for them). But it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if the D Backs turn right around and hold some other dopey suburb hostage for a new park nobody wants to drive out to. 

 

 

Oh, and for the Chicagoland folk, it's right across from Portillos.
