Boom. Done.

Can't do it. That symbol and motto have been grabbed by a political movement a lot of people find heinous.
I disagree. With that logic I guess Alabama and the A's have to get rid of their elephant logos since the GOP uses an elephant as their mascot.

Then we claim it back. It doesn't belong to them.
Yeah, they started using the Gadsden flag in, what, 2010?

:censored: the Tea Party, anyway.

EDIT: My B, I didn't see Ice_Cap's post until just now. I'm done, I promise.

Still, point remains...

No more politics, ok? Ok.

It isn't a discussion of politics as such; it's a discussion of logos, dealing in this instance with the question of whether a particular design element is appropriate for this logo in light of the associations and the meaning that it has picked up recently. Analogous topics would be the University of Hawaii's act of changing its sports logo to remove the rainbow, most likely because of the strong association of the rainbow as a symbol of gay liberation, and the Houston Astros' decision (eventually reversed) not to include the gun on their Colt .45s throwback jersey.

The comparison is not valid. A mere depiction of an elephant does not in itself call to mind the Republican Party. The imagery can easily be used by other entities without creating references to that in people's minds. By contrast, the image of the snake with the "Don't Tread on Me" motto, notwithstanding its having been created centuries ago, is nowadays known by most Americans only from its recent adoption by far-right groups. The association is extremely strong; this has become that symbol's primary meaning, and "taking it back" would be practically impossible.

I know that the flag is used by libertarians in some capacity, but I'm not sure how prevalent it is. And honestly, until this thread, I had NO IDEA the Gadsden flag was used that heavily by the Tea Party.

No, it is a discussion about politics. Someone brings up the Tea Party and calls them "heinous." The inevitable result is a Tea Party supporter taking issue and suddenly it's not about the DTOM logo or its appropriateness.

It would be one thing if we could have this discussion rationally and maturely. Many members here are capable of that. Many other members, however, are not. It's because of this that we like to nip politics in the bud, save for the rare instance where it becomes unavoidable.

This is not one of those instances.

Continue to discuss potential emblems for the USSF. Comment on the feesibility of the DTOM snake given its current political associations even. Do not, however, use that discussion as a means to get on your soapbox. There are plenty of sites out there for you to do that. This isn't one of them.

I just don't think it's a very good logo for a national team and/or association.

My problem with it aesthetically is that it looks too much like a polished logo. I prefer my national team soccer crests to be be more coat of arms or badge-esque.

Sorry, I realize I wasn't clear; I was talking about the "don't tread" snake logo.

So was I. It looks too polished to me.

Hmm... Not feeling this. Nothing says soccer about it

I'm OK with it, but I, too, fail to make a connection with soccer specifically. I actually like the current logo, and feel it could just be tweaked a bit. Maybe lightening the letter weiht a bit, or flipping the colors, or...
