New Orleans Pelicans to get pitches from 5 cities vying for Development League franchise

As I suspected, St. Tammany Parish is out; they have no facility.  Jackson has an antiquated coliseum- I can remember going to a rodeo there in 1968 when I was 4 years old.  Shreveport is planning a new arena...

Still think Biloxi would have been perfect; not sure why they didn't pursue...

Bring back the Mobile Revelers, please...only this time give them a proper logo:

It may be a moot point now since in all likelihood any Wizards D-League team will end up playing in their new practice facility. However, there's a local venue that hadn't even crossed my mind regarding the D-League until literally this morning, The DC Armory. (Did anybody mention it earlier in this thread?) It's official capacity is listed as 10K. They could easily lower that number by making it's upper deck/balcony seats unavailable. Also depending how floor level seats are configured. It's located at the same metro station as RFK Stadium. Though I don't know the Armory's parking situation for those that wouldn't want to take Metro. It's also an old venue, opened in 1941.

Here's a couple pics to give you all an idea of how events looks inside the armory. No clue what that basketball event pictured is/was.

It crosses the mind of locals, too; in passing.

Because it IS an old venue and by looking at their calendar, it's apparent that nobody is really interested in staging an event there.

Between the new(ish) convention center, Verizon Center and other newer venues in the area the armory doesn't get a lot of events. Could probably be rented out cheaper than most of the nicer venues though. But let's be honest a Wizards D-League club will probably be allowed access to the new facility for free. Even if the Wizards don't own the D-League club themselves.  Free > Cheap

So that story says it's the 27th team. Who's left? I've lost track. Denver...

I don't think Portland has one, either.

Hell, I know it wouldn't happen quite like what I just experienced, but if that happens, I'd like em to stumble upon me...I got a whole identity ready for em.

News on the Pelicans G-League front:

Shreveport, Pensacola finalists for Pelicans G League team, according to Shreveport mayor

Plans for potential home of Pelicans' G League team to be unveiled in Shreveport Tuesday

Eh, I figured something like this would happen. The desire to go with the new and shiny (new arena in Shreveport) will trump any sense about attendance or proximity to New Orleans (advantage: Mobile).

As I said on Tuesday..

Follow the Money.

Oh I'm sure on the name. Plus the Agua Caliente band is in that area and is a big Clipper's sponsor so not shocking. Still disappointing. We have a bunch of Native American bands down here with Casinos in and around SD that could have put their names on the team as well. Barona Clippers, Viejas Clippers, Sycuan Clippers, etc...

Shreveport City Council votes against building arena for Pelicans' G League team

So, if the "finalists" were Shreveport and Pensacola as reported earlier, does this mean it's gonna be Pensacola?

If so, use the same nickname. "Pensacola Pelicans" works well for that Gulf and bay-side area, and the alliteration sounds good.

They voted unanimously against it, too...that's damning. Good for the Shreveport CC for not being wasteful with their money.

Why can't they just work out a three-way deal with the Pelicans, the IceFlyers, and the city to give Bay Center some renovations? I haven't been there in almost a decade, but it seemed serviceable enough.

1. I'm having trouble finding attendance numbers.  Is this league really a big deal that cities have to compete for teams?  I did see that there was one game that drew 15k people, but what's the average?  Maybe it's because I'm in an NBA city, but I've never heard of this league outside of these boards.

2. Have there been any noteable players that truly "developed" in this league and then moved up to bigger and better things?  It seems like this is more just a place to keep crappy players fresh incase a team needs a short-term injury replacement rather than somewhere for inexperienced-but-promising rookies to get experience prior to being called up.

3.  I just read about the Sixers team, and it said that they had two noteable callups in '13-'14 year - except that neither of them was called up by the Sixers.  One was Lakers and one was Celtics.  How does that work?

Their attendance figures were pretty hard to find. I forget where I came across them, and can't really hunt, since I'm out and about and in phone. What I remember is that they were pretty underwhelming. A few cities stood out, like Sioux Falls and Portland, ME. The league is still relatively obscure, compared to the AHL and AAA baseball.

The thing to understand is that the league is still, essentially, in its infancy. Sure, it's been around since 2001, but the majority of its growth has been in the past 5 years.

As I understand it, more than a third of NBA roster players have played at least one game with the now G-League. Some have been conditioning, for lower level draft picks, and some have been brief rehab stints, to either knock or keep the rust off. The G-League system of call-ups appears to be a lot less formal than in its contemporaries, which is largely why it goes so unnoticed.

I can't think of any notable player I would truly attribute as having been "developed" in the G-League, but that's hardly surprising. Hockey takes up the bulk of my attention.

On a side note, I love minor league sports, and I'm planning on catching a couple NAZ Suns games whike visiting friends, in Prescott.

I'd say Hassan Whiteside, Danny Green and Jeremy Lin are the the most successful current players to come out of the DLeague

Those three are good examples, but not recent.

Yogi Ferrell and Jonathan Simmons are more recent successes.
