JayMac
I'm in a New Jersey suburb of Philadelphia... 1. Eagles (not a fan but they are the only team ever talked about) 2. Phillies (a distant second) 3. Flyers (my favorite and they have a loyal following but many consider hockey a niche sport) 4. Sixers (depending on who you talk to - Sixers are so bad that there is hardly any following. During the Iverson years, they may have been 3rd) 5. Union (there is a strong following for the team but they are still well below the top 4) @BringBackTheVet, since you are in the city, let me know if this assessment is correct
Magnus
Sudbury is nearly an even split (about 49-49) between Habs fans and Leafs fans, with the odd sprinkling of fans of other NHL teams. But we all get together behind the hometown Wolves, even in their worst of seasons.
kroywen
This is really tough in NYC, but let's see if I can give this a shot (and I'm sure plenty will beg to differ): 1. Yankees. 2. Giants 3. Mets 4. Jets 5. Knicks (if they ever become a top contender again, they'd shoot up this list) 6. Rangers 7. Nets 8. Islanders 9. Devils (not very popular in the city, though North Jersey is obviously quite mixed between the Devils and the Rangers) The Mets/Jets/Knicks portion is really tough - I gave the Jets the nod over the Knicks by sheer virtue of football attracting more eyeballs than basketball, but it's tough to say. wildwing64
Billericay's a small town, so my list based on my own observations extends beyond the area into the rest of Essex and suburbs of East London. 1. West Ham United 2. Arsenal FC 3. Tottenham Hotspur 4. Manchester United 5. Chelsea FC 6. Liverpool FC 7. FC Barcelona . . . . . . 64. 4_tattoos
I live in Washington, DC. Here's how I see it only ranking the local teams (there's a lot of transplants in the DC area). Redskins Capitals (because they're still alive in the NHL playoffs) Nationals Wizards D.C. United Mystics Lately 2 and 3 rotates between the Caps & Nats because both teams have been in the paper champs category many times in recent years. No matter how bad they are the Skins are practically cemented as the number 1 team in the area. Hotter Than July > Thriller

This is a fair assessment as to where things stand now. I would say that the Mets can and likely will (or have already) passed the Giants as they're on the upswing at the Giants have fallen on some hard times (and embarrassing moments) of late. Back in the 80s, specifically 1984-1990, when the Mets and Giants were both great, the Mets were clearly more popular than the Giants and the most popular team in all of NYC. It's doubtful the Mets can get back to that level now with what the Yankees have accomplished between 1994-2012. That's a big body of work. The Jets are easily more popular than the Knicks. If they ever win a Super Bowl they can at least be equal to the Giants in popularity, but not until then. The metro area is probably 55-45 Giants over Jets right now. The Devils don't even belong on this list (my team) they are styled exclusively as a NJ suburb team, they have never for a second tried to expand that appeal into New York. They're Jersey and only Jersey. Islanders are probably more popular than the Nets. Nobody cares about the Nets, nobody wants them around.

The thing about the Leafs that's awesome is there is another Borschevsky goal/moment on the horizon. It's guaranteed, unless the team never again wins a playoff series ever, which not happening. @2001mark

4_tattoos
So UGA is more popular in Atlanta than Georgia Tech? I could understand UGA being more popular statewide since it's the flagship, but I would have thought the school actually located in the city of Atlanta would be more popular there at least. Yeah, the Devils really have zero appeal within NYC itself, except among a handful of fairly younger Jersey transplants who moved across the river. Looking across the metro area, the Devils have decent support in Jersey (and minor support in Rockland/Orange Counties, probably), but the Rangers still probably do better among 45 and over fans in NJ. The Nets are tough to figure out in terms of support. How many Jersey fans did they maintain? How many (actual) fans have they picked up since the move to Brooklyn? (And not just people who watched for the very first month, and then forgot the team existed around the time Jay-Z sold his stake.) Really tough to tell right now. But barely anyone in NYC seems to notice their existence, so I'm guessing their fanbase is still quite small. Should they become a winning team, I can easily see the Nets' support exploding, though. Still, I think I'd put the Nets' level of support over the Islanders' just based on the fact that basketball tends to be more popular than hockey. NY (AL) has only won 1 more World Series than the Mets since 2001, and they haven't won a pennant this decade. Their current team is a mess and their farm system isn't exactly bursting with can't-miss prospects. They may need to suck for awhile before they become serious contenders again, unless they try patching things together from year-to-year by adding free agents which is basically how they got in this mess to begin with. Meanwhile the Mets are coming off a World Series appearance and should be in great shape the next several seasons with their young pitchers coming into their primes. They are a much more exciting team to watch compared to that team up north and will be for the foreseeable future. Besides, it wasn't like they were fielding terrible teams when the Mets owned the city in the 80s. The Mets were just better.
