Does Penn State's and Memphis' losses hurt Temple? Do they have any shot at one of the major New Year's Day bowls (where they'd likely get destroyed)?

If they're the highest ranked Group of 5 team, they would get in. Those won't hurt them... but, they have a game with Memphis in two weeks and a potential match up with either Houston or Navy in the American title game. These two games give them a chance to get that golden ticket.

That Arkansas game last night was great, but is there a reason the lateral wasn't considered a fumble? If it were, Arkansas wouldn't have been able to advance the ball to get the first down since you can't advance a fumble recovery on fourth down.

Because it was clearly a lateral

Which hit the ground, making it a fumble. Had the defense recovered it would have been scored as a fumble recovery. That kind of play is the reason for the rule that you can't advance a fumble on 4th down in the first place.

Intent was a lateral. Rules =/= stats.

Iowa is... pretty high, aren't they?

Their win against Pittsburgh appears to be their only "big" win of the season.

I think Oklahoma State should be higher, they're undefeated and they beat TCU. But like all of you say, the only poll that matters is the last one.

Iowa rose to #5 because Barry Alvarez and Tom Osbourne essential bullied the other 10 in the room since both their teams lost to the Hawkeyes.

The way the commitee is supposed to work, anytime a Big Ten school is discussed, Alvarez and Osborne have to leave the discussion. Pat Haden was the one in charge of presenting the Big Ten argument. Since he's gone, I'm not sure who took over.

That is incorrect. Note the Recusal Policy. Alvarez is permitted to answer only factual questions about the institution from which the member is recuse, in his case, Wisconsin.

These rankings are nothing but a TV show, intentionally volatile to get people talking.

A Clemson-Notre Dame rematch? Please. But at least the team the Irish lost to is ahead of them.

Alabama 2? Whatever. Gets the people angry that Alabama gets a mulligan. Last year at this time the narrative was "Could the SEC get THREE teams in the playoff?!"

Iowa at 5? Well, they beat two of the current top 25 ... on the road. Anyone else got that? No? Put 'em in there and...

...embrace debate. (And keep trolling the XII hard.)

Previously noted, however Alvarez/Osbourne are easily running the committee's narrative through Jeff Long's comments.

Week 1 Long was emphasizing offensive output, but Baylor and a FR QB gets no credit for his first start, but ND staying the course with a backup QB, who has lost moves up they factor in weather. Alvarez/Johnson/Ty/Osbourne will change the narrative in the last two meetings (or three if they must wait for afte Army/Navy).

So Clemson is in first place right now, and I think it would be awesome to see them win the title this year. I was talking to some friends the other night and a drunk girl told me that Clemson would get absolutely wrecked by a team like Alabama or Ohio State. I beg to differ, and a wise man once told me never to take sports advice from a drunk female. I think the Tigers are legit and I predict that they will win the National Championship this year. What do y'all think?

Notre Dame is criminally high, like they always are. No way that team beats anyone else in the top 10.

Their last three opponents are pretty weak (Syracuse, Wake Forest, Gamecocks), so they'll probably be undefeated going into the playoffs. That means we'll most likely get to see them play someone else in the Top 10. I'd love to see them crush the Buckeyes, but maybe I'm just a little too hopeful.

And dude, but Rudy! How could Notre Dame not be sick? :therock:

DIdn't the Big XII backload their schedule this year? Oklahoma State-TCU was really their first big game in conference play. Since they don't have a conference championship game, their best plan-of-action is to try to get their biggest games at the end of the year for that "lasting impression" for the playoff committee.

The Big XII saw what happened last year. Since it was highly unlikely they'd have 12 members this year (remember, a lot of these conference realignments took a couple years to complete), they didn't want another case of TCU being #3, winning their last game by 50 points, and drop three spots in the playoff rankings. They needed that final moment like the other conferences have with championship games.

Their only loss was at now #1 Clemson by two points in Kizer's third game, racking up over 100 more yards than Clemson. They also only lost by two points even though they committed three more turnovers. I think they're a pretty good team.
