Of course the league can't get out of their own way right before the season is about to start. Pride tape was never a mandatory thing, like the warmup jerseys, and there have been zero controversies related to players not using it. People were real quick to defend the players' freedoms when it came to not wearing the jerseys, but now they don't have the freedom to use multi-coloured tape?

I'd be curious to see what happens if a player decides to use it anyway. Or if a goalie decided to paint a pride flag on his helmet. I can only imagine the bad press that would come out if the league starts issuing fines to players for supporting the LGBTQ+ community.

This is a great call. Keep politics out of sports.

What exactly is political about showing support for the LGBT community?  It's not like he's wearing tape that says "no national healthcare!"

Were they savvy enough to say "no tape that isn't white or black" for visual-distraction reasons, or did they just straight-up say no one's allowed to have gay tape?

Given the demographics of the league, I wondered if they also want to preempt blue and yellow Personal Opinion Tape on teams that don't wear blue and yellow, but I don't think people care as much about that now.

Doesn't look like there's been an official statement released, but I've seen this paragraph verbatim on multiple articles:

"The updated guidance reaffirms that on-ice player uniforms and gear for games, warmups and official team practices cannot be altered to reflect theme nights, including Pride, Hockey Fights Cancer or military appreciation celebrations. Players can voluntarily participate in themed celebrations off the ice."

So it seems like the league specifically said no gay tape. Though knowing the state of journalism it might have just been a bunch of sites just copying the same article.

I've got a dribbble, check it out if you like my stuff; alternatively, if you hate my stuff, send it to your enemies to punish their insolence!

The NHL, as usual, has stepped in it again. After saying he would pay the fine to wear the mask in warmups, the NHL threatened the Wild with double secret probation or something. Now, we get to see what the league will actually do about it.

Amazing mask, btw.

So we have two instances of the NHL attempting to enforce this mess of their own, then pissing down their own leg within hours and doing nothing because it would be monumentally stupid PR, even by NHL standards.

If I'm a player, and especially if I'm a player agent, I'm definitely pushing the edges of any other of the league's softer rules/dumber traditions and daring them to do something about it. They've proven themselves idiots and cowards twice.

In related news, taking a full swing with a windup at your opponent and cracking against his skull with your stick carries a maximum allowable punishment of $5,000, apparently. Todd Bertuzzi must be quite surprised.

Maybe they'll announce Quebec City as the arena site, and that they've already settled on a name - Centre Vidéotron.

It's crazy that the Coyotes just realized they weren't going to get taxpayer money for an arena. No one cares whether they're there or not. Multiple municipalities have flat out told them they don't want them. They might have the least leverage in history to get taxpayer money to build a stadium and it's crazy it took them this long to realize that.

It's pretty crazy they haven't moved to either Quebec City or Houston. Both have arenas already ready - so that saves them $1B-$2B right there because they're not getting tax money in Arizona. They also would already have a built in fanbase in Quebec City or be in the 3rd largest city in the US in Houston. Teams also make most of their money on franchise valuation and having a popular team in either market would have to increase the value of the franchise a ton.

Alex Meruelo can't run casinos in AZ if the team moves out of state.

He would be a complete moron to care about that. I won't pretend to know how much he makes from running a casino, but I can confidently say that he is leaving money on the table.

The Coyotes are currently the least valuable team in the NHL, valued at $675M. Let's look at the value of teams in similar markets to those he could move the team to.

Calgary, Edmonton, and Winnipeg all average out to a valuation of $1.2B.

Dallas has a valuation of $1.1B.

So he is essentially leaving half a billion dollars in valuation plus roughly $1.5B he'll have to spend to build an arena if anyone in Arizona let's him. There is no chance his casino is making a number that even sniffs an amount to be worth losing $2B off the bat and more and more every year.
