Glendale will be fine if we lose the Coyotes. Especially Westgate, we have a new outlet mall next door that should bring in jobs and cash. Plus if the casino is built, that should bring in more money towards the Westgate City Center. The only thing that worries me is if Prop 457 does go through. 1/3 of all police officers and firefighters will be cut, no more festivals that could bring in cash and the 2 of the 3 libraries with the Primary library being closed 5 out of the 7 days.

Firings, or layoffs? Layoffs would be standard practice for a team facing a long lockout.

Meanwhile, the mayor of Glendale is starting to admit the inevitable: http://www.azcentral...?nclick_check=1

Glendale has been cranking out budget scenarios to show where the city would stand considering different variables, such as keeping or losing the sales-tax hike and keeping or losing the Phoenix Coyotes.

It's the latter that has caught the attention of Mayor Elaine Scruggs.

No immediate cuts would be needed, according to one scenario that assumes the city keeps the tax hike but loses the hockey team that plays at the city-owned Jobing.com Arena.

Scruggs highlighted the no-cuts scenario at this week's council workshop and called on council members to rethink the Coyotes deal.

The mayor said handing out $71 million to the team as proposed in the next five years would mean city employees would lose jobs and services would be cut.

The mayor said that wasn't acceptable. She added she would rather keep popular city festivals that are in danger of being cut than pay millions to keep the Coyotes.

"I don’t want to turn off the lights in Glendale," Scruggs said, suggesting the hockey and concert arena could attract other events that would keep visitors at Westgate City Center, the nearby shopping and restaurant complex.

:suspect:

Reason why we Scruggs is the outgoing mayor. We have Manny Cruz and Jerry Weiers as the mayoral candidates of Glendale and already killing each other and how much they would cut in budget. Both seem wrong imo as they really haven't brought anything to the table that would fix the city.

THEN WHY THE :censored: WOULD YOU DO IT? HOW THE :censored: DO YOU SEE KEEPING A HOCKEY TEAM AS MORE IMPORTANT THAN CITY SERVICES?

I'm now awaiting the statement from Joyce Clark calling the Mayor a "Mexican-Canadian Sympathizer."

Damn those dirty brown taco-eating syrup-chuggers! Damn them all to hell!

These are the only events they have scheduled that aren't hockey games. Arena Management Fee!

Often, there are events and conventions that are purposely not listed on the arena's published calendar. These can range from schools playing scheduled games or large ceremonies to big-name businesses renting the building for a convention, etc. There are many events that take place at Philips Arena that aren't listed on the arena's website. I can almost guarantee that there's some sort of events taking place in Jobing.com Arena that simply aren't listed or advertised.

And it's tough to blame the folks running Jobing.com Arena for few events outside hockey taking place during the season. For one, those in charge of the arena have to assume that the full schedule gets played, and also have to assume that their team could be playing hockey when the Stanley Cup Final takes place. Secondly, there are some shows and concerts, etc., that simply don't like having ice on the floor. Thirdly, there are other options in the Phoenix area (the arena where the Suns play, in particular) that are in competiton with Jobing.com Arena for hosting events. Fourth, many shows and conventions and concerts are planned out 8-12 months in advance. It's not very often a show/event can get squeezed in on very short notice.

In other news, the Abbotsford Heat announced a $1.87M loss last season that the city of Abbotsford, population ~170,000, is on the hook for. That's about $11 per person.

Why is this team not Phoenix's farm club? They'd be perfect together.

well it's only fitting that the Flames take a scorched-earth policy to everything concerning its farm system.

I read a report somewhere once on this thing that the Canucks are negotiating to buy the Heat and the arena they play out of, which is a pretty logical idea, which is why I don't know if it's true or not. If so, I guess Chicago is the next town to have hockey ruined by Calgary, and if this is indeed the case, sorry Blackhawks fans, you guys are boned.

I think the Wolves would sooner go indy than take on a Calgary affiliation.

Fun fact: AHL teams do not have to have an NHL parent.

Then how the hell would the NHL team call up players?

Well they better hope some other team is willing to do a dual affiliation.

Because Maine.

I haven't been to a Portland Pirates game since the Coyotes became the parent club. I hate the Coyotes this much.
