FiddySicks
Washington offered him more money, more years, and IMO is a lot better of a fit for him, so he chooses the Cubs. Why? It's going to be really entertaining if the Cubs still don't win anything. On 11/19/2012 at 7:23 PM, oldschoolvikings said: She’s still half convinced “Chris Creamer” is a porn site.) rams80
Ehh, last time Cardinals missed out on retaining a big FA it ended up working out OK for them (right Angels?) Granted Heyward's considerably younger, but I kind of feel hesitant about 8 year deals. We'll see how it goes. Cujo
I'm pretty "meh" on $184M/8 for Heyward. Would I have preferred the Heyward/Lackey money go towards Zack Grienke and bringing back Fowler on the cheap? Without a doubt. However, I pretty much trust Theo & Co. at this point. In two seasons, they went from a 96 loss-team to the major's best "on paper". And there are still moves to be made involving Baez, possibly Soler and so-god-help-me Schwarber. I bet it's still not going to work. "Throwback, curse believing, Bartman obsessing bleacher bum" would completely side with you. However, this edition has a much different vibe to it. How can anyone NOT trust Theo Epstein and Joe Maddon leading the way? Considering their previous turnarounds, past successes and what they've done for the Cubs in this brief amount of time, the immediate future on the Northside is damn bright! CS85
That lineup is absolutely horrifying, but the Cubs have painted themselves into a corner now - they have a 2-3 year window where they should win the championship, and if they don't do it soon, they never will. FiddySicks
That's kinda how this feels. The Cubs really didn't need to make this move, but decided it was enough of a positive inclusion that they were willing to sacrifice future payroll flexibility to do so. I disagree with that sentiment, and think the Cubs are going to regret this move sooner rather than later. It would be one thing if they didn't have so much young talent, but sooner rather than later they're gonna have to lock all that talent up long term, and I think they just kinda hurt their chances there a bit. It's not a bad move to bring in Jason Heyward, as he's a fantastic player. But this feels like they just shortened their window quite a bit. Better get it done, Cubs. And better get it done quick. Kramerica Industries
26 year olds don't hit free agency too often. They're actually paying for Heyward's prime years, theoretically. Heyward would've been a brilliant acquisition for anyone even at an eight year term. And I'm really thrilled, once again, to not have to be dealing with Theo doing this with the Red Sox. CubsFanBudMan
I think "windows" are always smaller than we think. The Cubs clearly jumped a year early when they went and got Maddon last year. It worked, if you subscribe to the idea that getting into the postseason consistently is the goal. One down. Now everything appears to be lined up for another three years. By then, some of these prospects will fade or be traded, veterans will be injured or washed up, and the core will be paid as new pieces -- prospects and free agents -- are added for the next four-year window. A new window funded by expanded Wrigley and playoff money (but hopefully not disappointment). By then, if a championship has been won, nothing matters. The minute a Cubs fan starts complaining after a World Series championship...(EDIT: 2004 Red Sox vs. 2007 Red Sox come to mind... not all of these Cubs will be here in 2019... and that's all part of the plan, more or less.) tigerslionspistonshabs
It's not often that the "team of the off-season" goes on to win the title, in any sport. Last season everyone and their mother picked the Nationals.
CS85
A Letter to the Non-Cub Fans Moaning in Anguish At the 2015/16 Offseason:The Cubs haven't even won anything yet but a lot of fans from all over the web are already groaning about "Oh no, here come the unbearably smug Cubs fans, here to ruin our lives like the Red Sox fans did."Screw you guys. Screw all of you (these other assbag fans; most of you around here are okay. Sorta.).The Cubs haven't won DICK in over a lifetime. Cubs fans have been enduring implosions and heartbreak and failure for decades. Red Sox fans suffered their own plight, yes, but when they had their run of success they were absolutely privileged to embrace it. I envied their fans for having the legitimate championship hardware to earn that kind of mentality. All these fans that are setting the table for enduring the braying success the Cubs are apparently going to have with their 3 straight world series is establishing a precedent of disdain before the team has even won anything.I hope all the Cubs fans you know, old timers and new ones (I'm sorry, "bandwagoners") just make all your lives miserable as hell if they win a World Series. I hope they paint your lawns blue, run W flags up your gutters, and sing "Go Cubs Go" around you for all hours of the day. I hope all the things you like about your more niche and recently unsuccessful teams are ruined by this. I hope your teams all suck. I hope they suck ass. I hope they ruin your year. And when the Cubs succeed, I'll be with them embracing the moment and being as obnoxious as possible because god damnit, fans have earned that right. "NONONONONO YOU CAN ONLY BE THAT WAY IF YOU'VE BEEN A LONG TIME FAN," yata yata. Blow all that out of your respective asses. The Cubs being good is better for baseball than if any of these crummy small town, piddly market teams succeed. The Cubs are the eternal underdog that finally has the window, a REAL window, to succeed, and I'm not going to let you downer dickheads dampen it for me by poo-pooing the Cubs title celebration years before it happens, if it ever happens. FiddySicks
So, your team wins the off season, and you want fans of the "losing" teams to NOT complain about that? FiddySicks
Is it wrong though? That whole "Screw youz guys! I hope you find us to be SOOPER obnoxious!" bulls**t is basically the blueprint that Red Sox fans followed, and it's to the point where the Yankees are more endearing than them now. Please. We implore you. Don't become that. ESPECIALLY considering that you haven't won dick yet. On 11/19/2012 at 7:23 PM, oldschoolvikings said: She’s still half convinced “Chris Creamer” is a porn site.) FiddySicks
Oh, by all means, be as happy as you want about it. But don't expect me or any other non Cubs fans who lost out on those free agents to join you in that happiness. My team has won quite a bit in the last few years, yet the top free agents in the past two off seasons have looked at our nine figure offers with complete and total indifference so they can go play Ferris Bullers Day Off with Joe and Theo. Just understand that people naysaying success or potential success is simply the nature of the game. You have two choices here. You can just kinda humbly accept it and realize that it's worth the success you'll have/hope to have, or you could be a Red Sox fan. Don't be a Red Sox fan.
