The Lightning are toast. That was their chance and they blew it.

Not that wiping a good goal off the board helped any. They never looked the same after that. The damn offsides rule has got to go. Drouin for all intents and purposes was onsides, provided no unjust advantage to Tampa by his placement, he held up to allow the puck to move forward ahead of him, which is the exact purpose of the blue line, and physically most of his body was behind the line except his back foot was in the air.

The rule is meant to prevent full body cherry picking like this:

But 95% of the time it's being applied to wipe good goals off of the board, in a league where low scoring is always a concern, because of ticky tack bullcrap like this and it's been awful all playoffs long

Downgoesbrown (I think it was him) had his twitter followers go back and look at some of history's greatest goals and determined which ones would've been disallowed if these rules were applied to them. Turns out, A LOT!

As far as Bay Area teams go, you figured one would be on the brink of a Conference title -- just that nobody had that team being the San Jose Sharks.

Goes to show amazing things happen when expectations are lowered!  Ftr, I still have the Blues winning in 7.

The Lightning have the best goal song in the league.

The standard song is great, but some of the individual player songs are good too:

- Stamkos = Hammertime (Stammertime)

- Callahan = Going Back to Cali

- Tyler Johnson = Johnny B. Good

Theres been a local blog recently trying to get Smooth Criminal by Alien Ant Farm played for Kucherov, but we shall see if it's working or not.

In the NFL, their rules changes serve to make things needlessly complicated.

In the NHL, their rules changes are actually worse than the previous rules. I would find it a lot more hysterical if it wasn't my teamthat just got burned by it last night in...oh, a potential clinching game to go to the Final.

(Not that it's any excuse for the overall poor game they played. Need to be much better, especially since they did the exact same thing last year against the Rangers. But...jeezus did it take no time to realize this rule sucks, and having it influence an enormous late-round playoff game was plainly inevitable from the start. It kinda sucks when, as a fan, you have to now train yourself to really wait for "was it onside?" before you can really celebrate. It's the NHL's version of yellow flags, and that sucks enough watching football. Football/hockey fans are really taking it in the ass now.)

You're right. What sucks about football is you can never trust that a scoring play was actually good until you see the replay or if you're at the game you have to frantically search the field for a flag. I'm never certain a touchdown is actually a touchdown in football and for me it's always been that way. The thing that's always been great about hockey is if the scoring thing happens, if your brain sees the thing go into the thing, then you're trained to be happy/sad about it. There's never been any questioning about it until now and like football, that sucks.

Sure, there's disallowed goals on kicks and interference that have been waived off before, but usually if a goal like the one Drouin scored happens you can be certain it was a good goal.

Also, obviously I can't prove this, but I'm very certain that if that's Crosby and the Penguins then the goal stands due to "insufficient video evidence to overturn the call on the ice".

Also, re: kicked in goals - there's some level of intuition involved there in that, even in real-time, we can generally see the puck was kicked in (generally...sometimes scrums make it difficult), and depending on how it was kicked, we can sometimes discern, with reasonably good accuracy, whether it was a clean goal or not. Sometimes a stunner comes in, and the rules were broadened a few years back, but we know how to react to those.

On a sequence like Drouin last night...you think anyone thought, in real-time, "offside?". Outside the Pens coaching staff maybe, no. So, as a fan of the scoring team, especially in such a game, you are ecstatic as can be until the review is announced, then the replay showing the most insignificant of infractions  (though, per the rule, yes, an infraction) appears, and it's just a terrible feeling to know that it's going to be wiped out due to something that had zero bearing on the actual goal.

Review is good! Not wanting offsides goals, in theory, is good. But that goal, a couple StL goals, and others, are not in the intended spirit of the rule. At all.

Too true.

This is going to be a long 20 minutes. Blues have started chipping more shots in there but they still look a bit off.

Btw you owe the Sharks an apology for publicly disowning them for good following the reverse-sweep.

Nah. We're pretty chill here in the bay. Most of us don't take things way to seriously. Only SoCal hates our guts and vice versa.
