Good Lord.  This is a massive amount of bitching over something that really doesn't warrant it.

The Rams are temporarily going to wear a uniform in which the jersey will have a color that doesn't appear anywhere else. They are doing this because they want to refresh their look for their new market in the short time before they move into their new stadium, and the NFL won't allow them change twice.  When they move, they will make a more permanent and cohesive change, and everyone will stop thinking about whatever they wear this year, or next.

What most of you seem to be forgetting is that the Rams have looked like garbage for years.  It's not like they're dumping something awesome for this.

Try to get over it.

All they needed was the metallic gold pants. These were not garbage, and much better than the overrated royal and yellow set.

Ill agree with this. Problem is, they haven't looked like this in YEARS. They ditched the gold pants a long time ago.

I can't say I'll start to miss the gold and navy years for the Rams once they're back to royal and yellow, because I already miss the gold and navy years. What they had prior to this season was an absolute shell of their original G and N set, and then actually looking good in G and N set sail YEARS ago.

OK, I get it... an NFL team is coming out with a new uniform, and there's a color on the jersey that doesn't appear in the helmet or pants.  That's gotta make every one crazy, right?  What a disjointed mess it is to have a piece of the uniform carry an extra color... it's gonna ruin everything.

I mean, just look at it...

That dark gray is only on the jersey!!!  What a mess!!

Wait, that's not the uniform everyone is upset over?  Huh.

We understand the reason why. That doesn't change the fact that they look like a high school football team that only had enough money to change jerseys one year or vice verca

But that is just a number outline, it's not number outline, shoulder stripes, and logo on the sleeve all having a completely different color than what appears elsewhere in the uniform. Not just a darker color that already a part of the uniform that is only being used to help make the numbers clearer to see.

I guess saying the Rams' Millennium Blue and New Century Gold set was " much better than the overrated royal and yellow set" should go to the Unpopular Opinions thread. :)

This is very true. The Nike changeover did them no favors (pale gold, toilet seat collar), and getting away from the gold pants was a huge mistake.

Before Nike took over and ditched the metallic fabrics in favor of beige, the Rams had a very nice set.  But even those were inferior to the throwbacks.

And yet I'm not sure anybody had a problem with the white in this set.  It's the number outline and shoulder stripes, and the white doesn't appear elsewhere on the uniform.

So this is really a Rams tradition, an extra accent color thrown into the jersey that you don't find on the pants or helmet. :P

The complaining is justified.

The team has in its uniform arsenal the classic-coloured throwback that matches the fans' clear preference.  The team could therefore opt to wear those throwbacks full-time.

This would defy the NFL's rules; and so the team would be fined for every game in which it did this.  Solution: pay the damn fine...and look like the L.A. Rams are supposed to look.  The amount of goodwill that this act would have earned amongst fans is enormous.

Instead, the (temporary?) move to white horns on the helmet creates confusion by casting doubt on whether the ultimate result will indeed be the uniforms represented by the throwbacks.  This is an insult to a fanbase which identifies strongly with blue and yellow.  And the use of the white-horned helmets with jerseys that retain gold highlights creates an aesthetic mish-mosh that muddles the brand.

To make matters worse, the opening of the new stadium (and, therefore, the debut of whatever the permanent new uniforms will be) has been put back another year.  So fans will have to put up with the eyesore of this ridiculous hybrid kit for even longer, instead of seeing the real L.A. Rams uniforms that everyone wants.

So it is fair to say that the team has completely botched this.

Saw this weird hybrid uniform between the 2000-2016 uniforms and the Throwback unis on a Nike poster at a sports memorabilia store. This has been around since last year, but I've never gotten the chance to take a picture of it.

Probably doesn't mean much, but it's weird that they had chosen to display a weird hybrid uniform that the Rams never used.

Do you know this or are you just assuming?  I've never read about a fine.  Maybe there is, I don't know.  But it isn't like the NFL is an outside entity dictating rules to subordinates. The NFL is 32 teams, with owners that decide together what they want to do. The Rams owner is a member of this group... what, is he fining himself? They obviously decided they absolutely didn't want to make the final change until the new stadium was ready.  Maybe the Rams decided the rules make sense in the big picture, and decided to work within them.  Also, maybe when informed they could fiddle with everything but the jersey, they took it as an opportunity to play around a bit, involve the fans in some choices... temporary stadium, temporary uniform... works for me.  Sgt. Hulka says lighten up, Francis.

If you like.

But yes, there are any number of circumstances under which teams can be fined or penalized. Because the NFL office is separate from the owners themselves. The owners choose the commissioner, and can remove him at any time, but agree to abide by his decisions until that point. The owners might be his bosses, but the teams themselves are indeed subordinate to him.

We see teams losing draft picks for various rule infractions, and don't consider that to be the owners taking picks away from themselves. Why should we look at fines any differently?

Even the royal and yellow unis we're all pining for don't feature any white on the helmets while the other elements do. And in the 90s the helmets were a dark navy blue while the jerseys were royal. I don't like the weird mish-mash of eras the Rams are going to use this year, but I think people often make too much of colors appearing somewhere without appearing elsewhere on uniforms. Not every element of a uniform has to be the same on every piece to work well together.

I'd hazard a guess that people on this board generally like this Ole Miss uniform despite powder blue only appearing on the helmets, and gray and navy only appearing on the pants.

EDIT: The facemask is actually gray. Whoops. But their normal navy helmets do not have gray facemasks, which are then paired with gray pants. So there.

Maybe that's a photoshopped pic from their Color Rush photo session.

No, I get all that.  Obviously I'm being facetious in suggesting teams can't be fined or penalized. It just seems to be a little ridiculous to try to see the Rams as victims of NFL policy here.  Without a doubt, they're doing exactly what they want to do.
