2020 NBA Offseason

GS got a player and OKC got one of their favorite types of guy: a draft pick.

No Klay and declining Draymond means we get to see what Steph can do on his own this year. I'm real sad Klay is hurt, but I am excited to see what Steph can bring solo (-ish).

For all the hate that the Warriors get, the one dude who I think most people at least kinda like is Klay. I mean, how could you not? He’s so delightfully weird. I’m bummed for the Warriors chances, but it doesn’t even compare to how bad I feel for him personally.

As someone who's hated the Warriors for the past few years, the only players I actually hated were KD and that jerk who purposefully injures players, I can't remember his name, but he's the one who got Kawhi hurt that one year. I really don't have anything against the others and I'm looking forward to Steph's retirement tour in his hometown.

That would be Zaza Pachilia. He was such an inconsequential part of that team, and then the whole Kawahi thing happened. I still think it wasn’t as intentional as some people made it out to be, but I’m more than happy to let that nobody journeyman shoulder the load of the blame for that 🤷‍♂️

I'm all for this if this paves the way for an NBA team to end up in Tampa some day.

(Though not quite in the same way the OKC Hornets thing end up turning into the Thunder. That would be harsh.)

Any future Tampa NBA team would have to be owned by Lightning Owner Jeff Vinik.

Being facetious here, but they could take some of the poorly-supported teams and temporarily relocate them to Canada and have a Canadian division like the NHL is probably doing.  Give the (once again) Vancouver Grizzlies, Winnipeg Hawks (they have the Thrashers, why not the Hawks?), and Quebec Pelicans a chance to outdraw their regular home crowds and the winner gets an expansion team.  The Quebec Basketball Nordiques has a nice ring to it.

I think it's very likely that the NHL, MLB, and the NBA expand by two teams each - and relatively quickly - to recoup some of their claimed losses.  Given that there's few municipalities that are going to fork over tax payer money for arenas, it's likely that the teams would go to markets that already have a facility* to go along with an ownership group.  Seattle will have the arena, and I'm willing to be there's no shortage of billionaires that would want to be the hero that brought the Sonics back (unless that name is now permanently owned by the Thunder, which would be very unfortunate.)

Is KC still looking for some team to play in the Sprint Center?  Not sure what the ownership landscape looks like there, but if there was someone that wanted to bring NHL or NBA to that market, now's the time to make the push.

*except MLB since no non-MLB city has a stadium.  No idea how that expansion would work, though I have a feeling they already know what two areas they'd target.

If Tampa now jumps the line over Seattle for a new or relocated franchise I'll explode.

I once had a thought that if Tampa Bay had a NBA team, they would be called the "Thunder".

Unfortunately, OKC stole that name.... and the Sonics.

I saw, I came, I left.

KC would probably be some consortium of local businessmen....and Patrick Mahomes. Seattle should have Todd Leiweike as a minority owner (due to his involvement in the Kraken), but also probably Russell Wilson (and his wife Ciara) and MacLemore.  But I would not be surprised at all if Las Vegas was interested, because it's Las Vegas and they are not content with only having 2 major league teams.  There will be calls for the NBA to have more POC owners once they announce expansion.

As for MLB? I don't see them expanding until the 2030's because I don't think the stadium issues that the Rays and A's have will be settled anytime this decade.  The A's claim that by next year they will have their stadium issues resolved.  I don't buy that.  It's going to be the same stadium stalemate in Oakland and Tampa that we've had for the last decade and until both issues are resolved, I don't think MLB will announce expansion, but COVID might expedite that.

I don't know if we'll see 34 teams in the NHL.
