It’s hardly “a handful of pissbabies on Buzzfeed.” It’s appreciable enough.

There's no place for measures that draconian short of some massive institutional failure like Penn State child rape or using the entire organization to launder money for organized crime.

Fair on that front. I wouldn’t have minded seeing the Astros treated like that after what happened.

We're only talking about unfashionable aesthetics here, a cause which, let's not forget, the Indians already acceded to by getting rid of the logo everyone hated so much.

No, they didn’t. The name had to go to, especially since their brand would have zero direction since Wahoo’s deletion. What can you do with “Indians” that wouldn’t immediately be controversial?

Maybe the Indians really are taking their time to get it right for 2023, maybe they're taking a calculated risk that America will burn itself out on constant race warfare by then and get distracted by something else, I don't know.

The “calculated risk” is the worst choice.

Neither one really causes me much anguish. It's more important to me that Cleveland gets back to being a strong baseball town again, which wouldn't be a direct function of changing their name.

I would say that not changing the name is a black mark on the sport and I hope Cleveland loses over 100 games a year until the name changes. Being “a great baseball town” with a name like Indians isn’t a good look for the sport.

Just play it safe as they have been the last couple years. No Native iconography or references to scalping, just the trappings of a baseball team that's been around forever. Ban headdresses and war paint on ticketholders as the Blackhawks do and kick some money to people who need it. But I'm fine with admitting that they've been the Indians for 100 years and people are gonna call 'em that, so as long as they don't do anything tasteless to escalate tensions -- I don't think "Indians" in and of itself is tasteless -- it should be more or less fine, and I strongly disagree that the Cleveland Indians being any good reflects poorly on the entire sport of baseball. If anything, I think it'd look much worse if the Indians were incompetent every single year.

I just think the identity as it is now is terminally boring, like a tv commercial team. The connection to Wahoo is too powerful to keep the name. No strict code of conduct will change that.

It’s still a Native American mascot without tribal approval. It’s odious. It needs to go away.

But it does need to change, regardless of the reason. Just like Washington NFL needed to change. Just like the Atlanta Braves, Kansas City Chiefs, and Chicago Blackhawks should adapt. Like so (I don’t fully approve of these designs, but I like their direction away from Native American mascots):

A historically marginalized people are not appropriate mascots. They never were, and never will be. You can complain about "CANCEL CULTURE" and "ESS JAY DUBYAS" all you want, but the fact remains that there are Native Americans who are not in support of the name. If one person is uncomfortable with the name, it must be changed.

Speaking of teams that had to change their names, UND should also drop the neo-Nazi’s name from their arena.

Engelstad was a controversial figure. He raised accusations of being sympathetic to Nazismowing to his collection of Nazi memorabilia stored in a private room, which he referred to as his "war room", within his Imperial Palacehotel-casino. After discovery of the memorabilia, Engelstad agreed to sell it rather than put it on display. In an apology letter to the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas, Engelstad said "I now feel I have done what I can and apologized for what I cannot do". In addition to the memorabilia he stored on display in his "war room", a printing plate was found within his hotel that was used to make bumper stickers that read "Hitler Was Right".

Except that Native American organizations disagree with you.

How appropriate this is about a baseball team because...

swing and a miss!

You've made your point on this matter numerous times. We get it.

Can the Guardians wear these the rest of the season?

I like what I’m seeing.

Obviously not what I would’ve done (my Spiders concept is elsewhere on the boards) but overall pretty nice.

I do hope they use the standard block numbers. Not that the fancy numbers look bad just that they’ve never really been associated with a custom font.

But honesty that’s a nitpick.
