MLB 2021 Season Thread

I love watching Jake Arrieta eat fart after fart after fart.  I haven't hated too many Phillies as much as I hated him, so watching him load the bases with no outs in the top of the first then give up a grand slam makes me happy.  Now hopefully the Phillies don't blow this in some embarrassing way.

When a team puts up a lot of runs in an inning, why is it called a “crooked number”?

Because typically numbers like 3, 4, 5, etc have more bends in them when written then 0 or 1.

Is that really the reason?  Wouldn't 2 be a crooked number too?  If so, it's never called that way.  They usually start calling them crooked around 5 (by my completely unscientific estimation.)

Another reason could be that in the age of manual scoreboards, it was hard to keep the numbers straight when the scorekeeper had to keep quickly changing the number higher for the inning.

First Place Brewers and the second place Reds begin their 7 game home  and home series with the All Star break in between. Reds are  games behind the Brew Crew. First four in Milwaukee, followed by the All Star break and then three in Cincinnati.  This is gonna be a huge 7 games for both teams.

Unvaccinated players that get covid should be suspended without pay, be forced to publicly apologize, and (if they're bad players anyway) have their knee caps broken.  Selfish morons.  How the Phillies won today is beyond me.  If it turns out that whichever of the idiots got it and spread it was unvaxed, I hope he's punished as hard as they're allowed to.

Yep.  The managers/coaches are vaxed, and claim that they've asked the players to get educated, but I'm not sure how a bunch of uneducated idiots are supposed to act educated.  Guys blaming their crap performance on a vaccine is amazing.  I also loved Hector Neris saying over and over again "it's just a personal thing".  Yeah - being stupid is personal... unfortunately it affects everyone.

I've had very little respect for the intellectual maturity of many pro athletes for pretty much ever, but covid has just solidified that most of these guys shouldn't be looked up to by anyone, even their pets.   If Brandon Kintzler's dog graduated from obedience school, it's probably smarter than its owner.

These athletes depend  on medical science to be healthy enough to be on the field of play, and yet, they still can't trust the medical professionals enough to get a vaccine.

I saw, I came, I left.

I was wondering why the Phillies second baseman was still playing with a mask on when they played the Reds about a month ago.

I wish baseball had taken a hard line stance against the unvaxxed the way the NFL did where they said "the Vaccine isn't mandatory, but your life is really going to suck if you don't get it". Instead in MLB there's no consequence to not getting it (save for the risk of contracting covid), which allows Anthony Rizzo to walk around maskless spewing bullshirt about personal choices and other invented worries and hogwash about a needle prick that is so harmless it makes the mountain these idiots are making out of this molehill even more infuriating. I, not a professional athlete (though in pretty good shape now thanks), took both shots and put in full days at work. That was 10 weeks ago and I'm still here with nary a side effect. These babies can't do the bare minimum to help us move past this pandemic.

I'm not sure who that was.  Luke Williams (rookie) doesn't wear a mask.  Maybe Ronald Torreas was filling in - I think he still wears one.   Didi Gregorious only recently stopped wearing one - he had been wearing both in the field and while batting because he has some kidney thing that puts him at risk, but he seems to legitimately be an exceptionally bright person, so I would imagine he got his shots (but I don't know for sure.)

It was Ronald Torreyes. He hit a home run while wearing a mask and while he was rounding the bases I thought about how weird that would've looked 2 years ago. Google image search looks like he's no longer wearing it.

I think the Angels have finally addressed their pitching needs.
