They're simply going on the umpire's ruling/ejection. So, obviously, there's noooooo way any umpire would ever dare use this unilateral judicial power for any kind of personal vendetta or vengeance... right? Huh? They don't even have to prove it's Spider Tack or something illegal? Why can't pitchers just use nail files or sandpaper like in the good old days? Makes me remember this clip from when I was a kid - they even used the bags to put the doctored balls in kinda like they do today: "The views expressed here are mine and do not reflect the official opinion of my employer or the organization through which the Internet was accessed." Selig may have been a douche, but at least I never questioned that he loved the game and wanted to do right by it, the fans, and the history of the game. He may have messed up on occasion, overlooked roids, etc..., but then he also made some very smart moves that improved the game on the whole I think. Manfred I'm still not convinced has ever watched a baseball game, nevermind likes it. I'll never forgive Selig for the Expos screwjob, but Manfred is a clown. DCarp1231
Watching Angels-Yankees and I have a question- So this is the first time I’ve watched Ohtani pitch and he’s in the lineup as the Pitcher, but not DH. Once Ohtani got pulled, they still allowed the relief pitcher to hit instead of getting a pinch hitter. My friend told me that an AL team can forfeit the DH if they choose to allow the pitcher to hit and it’s always been a rule. If that’s the case, why even make the DH a thing? In my head, there’s no point to the DH if that’s the rule. The position is what separates the AL from the NL yet you can forfeit it to allow AL pitchers to hit against AL teams? Angels starting pitchers have a habit of not eating up very many innings, so keeping Bundy in there was likely an effort to save some of the bullpen, as they've thrown far too many innings. Also, they've been short on position players on the bench lately (at one point last week, they literally had 2 available for a game), so not pinch hitting in this situation saves the use of a bench player for a single AB. And third, sometimes Joe Maddon makes weird decisions.
AnPheitseog
No AL team is required to use the designated hitter. Technically, I suppose, the default lineup for both the AL and the NL is to have your pitcher batting. Teams playing in an AL park have the OPTION, but are not required, to name a player to hit in the place of the pitcher. Hell, before they closed the loophole, Earl Weaver used to name the next day's starter as the DH and then pinch hit for him when the spot came up. AL teams have forfeited the DH before as well, notably when the DH is a backup catcher and the starting catcher gets hurt and needs to leave the game.
