There are five sports - football, baseball, hockey, basketball, auto racing, and curling. The rest are just glorified leisure activities. 🙃

That's six, 'Red. 😄

I never liked soccer until NWSL announced LA was getting a women's team and I liked the branding.  So I checked out women's soccer in general and I like it.  It's not as serious as men's, less injuries, less drama.  Anyone who doesn't like soccer should check it out.

I had a discussion with my father-in-law about weather golf was a sport or not.  While it's not an intense physical competition, it does take some physical conditioning to play.  He used to play, and he said it takes a toll on the body, it's not as easy as it looks.

I'm not a fan of basketball for the sport, I mainly watch for the cool uniforms.  I recently started watching LIU softball for the mono powder blue uniform.

No's for me:
Lacrosse
Golf (mini golf is cool)
Tennis
MMA/UFC/Wrestling/Boxing (I used to love WWF, but that was more for the personalities)
Any motorsport
Horse Racing
Snow sports outside of the Olympics
Rugby
Bowling
Curling

Fencing

Rowing

Volleyball

Oh, and POKER IS NOT A SPORT, ESPN!  😡

Devil's advocate:

What should it be considered then?

I'm not a particularly big golf fan. I really only like playing with my dad and uncle and my interest in the pro game is mild to none but I still think it's a sport so I'm curious as to where you land on this one.

As per the other games @Ferdinand Cesarano mentioned i'd also include ten pen bowling, outdoor bowls, curling, coights, and anything similar.

I always went with a personal observation of "if anyone can do it casually (or while drinking a beer), it's not a sport, it's a hobby"

It's not hard to casually pick up some darts and throw it at a static wall, or pick up a ball and roll it towards static pins, or pick up a club and swing at a static ball.  (Doing it well is a different matter).

When there's some sort of athletic skill to even do the core basics of a game, then you reach sport territory.

Personally, things like Golf, Boxing, Bowling, UFC....none of those are interesting to me at all.  I honestly cannot see why people get so excited to watch millionaires walk around a park and swing a stick at a ball and then get paid insane amounts of money for the privilege to do so.

This is 100% true, these games are a drinking game at most.

Who plays a SPORT where you hit a ball and go and  get it themselves anyway?

I don’t know how anyone can say it’s not a sport who hasn’t played and thus appreciate how difficult it is to play, much less play well. Then you have pros that just make it look easy to hit a ball 300 yards straight, or even make a 10 foot putt.

I'm not anyone but i posted it and others agree.

This is the whole concept of Golf summed up:

You get a bent stick and hit a small pebble like ball along a paddock until you get another bent stick and hit it into a hole, the person who does it with the least amount of whacks wins and you walk 10 miles to do it in the rain or super hot conditions.

I mean you could sit in the club house playing darts or pool with your friends while having some nice cold beers or Hennesey watching real sport on the tv.

I'll be crossing your name off the invite list for my summer BBQs because you're not coordinated enough to play football, baseball, or basketball with a beer in your hand.

How could anyone not play baseball while drinking a beer?  They build that capability right into the equipment:

curling

As a curler myself I challenge you to try the sport and say this. (Not in an angry or mean way. A friendly challenge).

I don't really care about the golf topic enough to get into it (tl;Dr walking and swinging a club seems like exercise to me) but curling is not nearly as easy as people think. I won't go off as no one really cares to hear me get that defensive but it's not just pushing a rock as hard as you can

Sports are not games, curling would come under a similar category to outdoor lawn bowls, bocce, pentaque etc. It's more of a gathering of similars who are invested in a game of closest to the pin wins like darts or horse shoe toss.

Nest you'll be telling me stone skipping is a sport.

For the record i represented my country in Lawn Bowls, still don't think it's a sport.

No. Stone skipping is not even close. You just flick your wrist. Lawn bowling, fun as it is, is just tossing a heavy ball accurately.

Curling requires core strength, the ability to slide with the shoes (as a hockey player too...yes I'm super canadian in that regard...it's harder than skating as one shoe is designed to be stationary ((stop you)) and one is designed to help you slide). You have to push a rock which requires core control as well as leg strength control (too fast can be bad, too slow also can be bad) plus sweeping hard requires arm strength while sliding.

not to mention just turning (aka curling the rock) the rock properly when delivering the stone but not leaning on it too hard...I frequently sweat a lot and "Feel it the next day" after a game.

I get it. People think it's Lawn bowling on ice. It's not. When I started curling I thought it would be a piece of cake....it's not at all. It's also something that you need to experience to really get it but it's a very physical endeavor and is a sport 100%.

Sounds over complicated.

Must be a sport.

okay actually I lied, I do in fact care immensely about skateboarding and motocross. I just don't really think of them as sports first, if that makes sense.

The only sports I've ever tried to enjoy and couldn't were motorsports and golf. There's plenty else that I don't care about or pay attention to that I've at least enjoyed at some point like MMA, boxing, lacrosse, tennis, and a lot of Olympic sports.

Oh look it's the semi-annual dumb and annoying gatekeeping of the word "sport" thread. And right on time here's the part where we get reductive about certain sports while not getting reductive about others. Classic. Let me know when we've declared that auto racing isn't a sport because "the car does all the work" and then we'll have played all the dumb guy hits.

F***ing simples.

Those are very much sports. The level of difficulty and risk of personal injury is basically beyond any other sport I’ve done. People who don’t see things like skateboarding/snowboarding/bmx as sports usually don’t have any experience doing them.

In a world in which poker, darts, and video games get coverage as though they were sports, it's difficult to single out golf.

So let's not single out golf!  The truth is that none of the aforementioned games are sports.

Those games didn't get sports coverage until cable TV was a thing and ESPN was reaching as far as barstool racing for content.  Major golf tournaments have always gotten network coverage as long as I've been alive. That's why it gets singled out.

How the hell is golf actually a spectator sport, anyway? Even with bowling and how I'd rather do it than watch it, I can understand why people would watch that. My idea of hell is where there's nothing to do but watch golf.
