2023 MLB Season Thread

maybe if we all mass report them for constantly disrupting the topic at hand with their opinion-as-fact posts something will be done?

It’s quite problematic that every page has them complaining about the matchups. At this point they’re in such a repeating loop of the same lines of thought that maybe they’re actually a sports forum AI?

Do not abuse the report button, folks.

Believe me, I get it, but....As annoying as he is, Unocal is not breaking any rules that I'm aware of. If dumbass opinions were against the rules, a lot of us would have been banned years ago. He is what he is. Proceed accordingly. There is always the ignore option.

If you want to call me a troll, you can't call me a troll. I'm not stopping anyone from voicing their opinions about me. Opinions are opinions.

I just feel strongly that the 5 team MLB playoff format of 2012-2021 was perfectly fine and didn't need to be expanded on.

If they keep it at 6, they if nothing else should reseed highest to lowest seed in the event of upsets.

Like 6 didn't even have to play 1! Usually lowest seeds have to beat the highest seed on deep playoff runs.

There's an old saying- if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

And let's not forget the new best of 3 WC format created little drama compared to the 1-game WC showdown decade where we had a lot of memorable moments.

OK. You're a troll. You know it, I know it, and everyone here knows it. You can contribute and state your opinion without being a disagreeable ass about it. Try it sometime.

My instant reaction to both last night’s and tonight’s games was “whoa! What the heck! This is crazy!” in the most positive way. It’s definitely one of the more bizarre WS matchups I can remember*, and I love it. Plus, it’s a matchup I can just sit back and enjoy. I don’t have a horse in the race and I don’t dislike either of the teams left to any degree at all. This should be fun all the way through.

*Red Sox/Rockies in 2007 comes to mind, but even then, that was far more one-sided bizarre towards the Rockies than anything; both because “Rockies win the pennant” was somehow a legitimately truthful sentence, and because they went from “sudden surprise inevitable buzzsaw” to “we suck again.gif” in the span of what felt like a few short days. They were like Pinocchio in Shrek 2 when he’s a real boy for two seconds but changed back to wood by a ricochet spell. One of the weirdest pennant winning teams I’ve ever seen.

That Rockies run to the post season and then the World Series is still the strangest run I’ve ever seen from a team. They had to win like their final twelve straight, and the Padres had to totally collapse, and even then it took the Rockies best player sliding into the plate on the final play just to get them in. Then they rode that momentum to the World Series where it immediately died. Becket struck out the side in the first and Pedroia took the first pitch deep and you knew it was already over. Fastest sweep I’ve ever seen. Hands down the worst World Series I can remember.

In an alternate universe, Cleveland wins game 7 and Colorado actually has a shot to win

Because many of us want mediocrity rewarded?

Diamondbacks, Heat, Panthers

2023- the year of the lowest seed. And god it sucks.

Strongly disagree, this is why we play the games. I love an upset.

Phoenix proper or the whole metro area?

The whole thing. I'm in Tucson and we hate going to Phoenix because of the heat.

Because nothing screams 'Exciting' like Dallas' least popular team vs a team that basically had a worse run differential than the 06 Cardinals that literally would have missed the playoffs every year prior to last year

Why bust your butt to win your division when being barely mediocre is good enough to go to the World Series?

If a barely mediocre team is good enough to sweep two division winners and the team that beat the third one... well, you aren't making the point you think you are.

Jtfc, you griped about the pitching clock too, didn't you.

If I weren't a mod, I probably would have replied with " and :censored: you while we're at it", but I am a mod so I didn't. 🙃

C'mon, 'Red. You're the people's mod. We want you to go :censored: .

Btw a little bit of weird trivia. Randy Johnson killed a bird in 2001 and the Diamondbacks went to the World Series. 22 years later Meryll Kelly kills a bird in spring Training and the Diamondbacks are again going to the World Series. It's like they're sacrificing birds for titles

Luckily, the Cardinals aren't in the Cactus League.

Had the Reds won their final two games with the Cardinals, they would've taken the Dbacks spot in the postseason.

See Diamondbacks? We did you a solid. (Please don't sacrifice us to your World Series Gods🙏)

Snakes Alive! Congratulations to the Diamondbacks on making it to their second World Series. If they are successful, they will join the Toronto Blue Jays and Miami Florida Marlins as the only ballclubs to go 2-0 in the Championship. No pressure though!.

I wonder what the oddsmakers had in mind for a Texas-Arizona World Series at the start of the season. Chances are it was a low or nonexistent percentage. Either way, this should be a fun series. I hope it goes to Game 6 or a Game 7.

The last two NL pennant winners would have missed the playoffs in every full season in the history of Major League Baseball prior to last season.

Good job, Manfred.

Don't think it's his job to win their games for them.

Those teams didn't have negative run differentials

You said they wouldn’t have made the playoffs in a previous season and then I provided two examples where, yes actually, they could’ve and now run differential matters.

I’m not expecting intellectual consistency from you, but if you want to do the run differential thing then the Rangers should be your team - They were 36 runs better than both the Orioles and Astros. They also have a top ten payroll, which should quiet the “what’s the point of even trying?” alarm bells.

So, again, I’m really not sure what you want other than to endlessly :censored: about every possible outcome. You even pre-bitched about an “inevitable” Astros-Marlins World Series before the playoffs began. I sincerely suggest finding a third hobby since sports and posting here clearly makes you so miserable.

Two things: 1. The Reds also blew a 9-0 lead to the :censored:ing Pirates in the penultimate series. I can think of about six more games they lost that easily should’ve been wins. That’s our fault, not the Dbacks.
2. the Reds pitching was a mess in the last two months and like two starters were healthy. They wouldn’t have gotten out of the wildcard series.

So basically, "had x happened, team wouldn't have made the playoffs!" (but x didn't happen)  "had team not won in the playoffs, they wouldn't even be in the world series!"  (but they won in the playoffs) "if run differential meant anything, team wouldn't have even gotten there (but run differential doesn't mean a damned thing).

Dude - we get what you're trying to say.  I agree that logically, 80ish-win teams aren't championship teams, but this isn't 19 dickety 7, and the format is what it is so I applaud anyone that leverages it to their advantage.

EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOUR 5,000,000 POSTS IS THE EXACT SAME THING.  You bring nothing but negativity and complaints into every single thread, and frankly, we're all tired of opening a thread just to see the same :censored:ing and complaining.  I don't think you're a troll, but maybe there's some other things that need to be dug deeper into - but that's not for any of us.  You're unequivicobly the least-contributive member of this forum, and we'd all appreciate it if you'd stop with the negaspam (if that's a thing.)*

Infrared/mods - can we just give him his own thread?  Ignore doesn't work, because someone will quote him, or you'll be tempted to peek at the car crash every now and then.  I once got 7 days (without technically breaking any rule... and actually interacting with mods who said nothing about violating any rules) for arguing for just a few hours with people that were complaining about the Patriots beating the Rams and that Matt Stafford sucks.  This is far more egregious than that, because it derails nearly every thread.
