It was 85 degrees and cloudless, which is just my kind of weather. The other bookish introverts I work with tend to coo over fall and sweaters and pumpkin spice, but I actually have the brain of a caveman: me like when hot because not cold and cold bad. And bouncing around from neighborhood to downtown to neighborhood to neighborhood and back, I was reminded of my conviction that as long as the weather isn't horrifying and no one is smoking crack cocaine in my train car, Chicago is the greatest city in the world. I was blissfully oblivious to the Bears game today (I actually forgot they were at home until I saw everyone boarding the train) other than catching a glimpse of the Bears up 21-7 near the end of the first half. But the point is that it was a glorious day full of people wearing Bears stuff, and it made me outraged at the Bears fans who hate Chicago so much that they want the team to move to Arlington Heights. Notwithstanding the fact that Soldier Field is mildly inconvenient and sort of a dump, notwithstanding that the bars in Lake View can put the game on TV equally well if the game were in Arlington Heights instead of downtown, the idea that so-called fans want to take this team away from what's basically the nerve center of the entire Midwest and stick them in a walled-off suburban parking lot/strip mall is just repulsive. Those people are horrible fans. They're pig people. They're snorting, squealing pig people who appreciate nothing of meaning and only want what they mistake for maximum comfort and consumption. Those fans don't deserve Chicago, but they don't deserve Arlington Heights, either. They deserve farmland west of Huntley and they deserve every hilarious loss this team takes, from the ones on the field to the ones where the McCaskeys get owned by the mid-level bureaucrats they didn't bother to learn the names of. Also, he has undoubtedly shown a pretty big improvement, and it feels like he’s growing up a lot.
