Rejected Bucs helmet

Guys, guys, guys (and I realize some of you are gals who read this board, and when I say gals, I mean female) - you have to admit a couple things, no matter what logo you liked the best:

1. No one else uses pewter, making it a totally unique color, which gives them instant logo recognition

Just to quibble a bit - they don't use pewter in the logo. The "totally unique" thing is the helmet color. Its use givesthem brand recognition, not necessarily logo recognition.

I like the current look, although some of these alternates might be better than what they chose. Thank goodness they didn't go in for some of the funky helmet striping patterns that were presented.

It's where I sit.

Remeber how most people hated the Bucs' uniforms/logos when they originally came out?

Yeah, i'm one of 'em. And I still do. Frankly, I don't think the pewter is distinctive enough to be a discernible brand identity for the Bucs. Esp. since other teams utilize metallic gold helmets that aren't that far removed from the pewter the Bucs use. Just looks tacked on, I feel the set would have been more aesthetically pleasing with a different colored helmet.

That white helmet looks badass, and part of me wishes they still had some creamsicle elements. The current look is superior though, but it's still really interesting to see all those variations. Some of them look like thye'd make great alternate logos, like the skull and crossbones wearing the hat.

They wear the pewter pants, too, which I really don't like. It just makes the look seem "dirty" when they wear them with the red shirts. I don't mind them so much with the white jerseys. Compare:

The red/white looks really sharp, in my opinion, much better than red/pewter.

-_- Red on Pewter much better. When you have three different colors for your team unis, it looks a little weird.

College sports as we know them are just about dead. The lid is off on all the corruption that taints just about every major program and every decision that the schools or the NCAA make is only about money, money, and more money. We'll have three 16+ team super-conferences sooner rather than later, killing much of the regional flair and traditional rivalries that make college sports unique and showing the door to any school that doesn't bring money to the table in the process. Pretty soon the smaller schools are going to have to consider forming their own sanctioning body to keep the true spirit of college sports alive because the NCAA will only get worse in it's excess from here

BINGO!!! Finally somebody who agrees with me. Nothing is worse IMO is when the helmet, jersey, and pants are all different colors. Uggh.

Yes! They should have used it instead of that goofy pirate ship, which is unrecognizable from more than 2 feet away. Look at the pics in recent posts and if you didn't already know what it was, could you tell?

The skull would look badass on the jersey sleeves.

I wonder how much they worried about getting Al Davis up in arms. He likes to unleash the litigators...

P.S. Re the pewter, just because it's "unique" doesn't mean it's good. Maybe there's a reason only 1 team in 32 uses it. :P

I must admit that I do like a lot of the designs that they came up with and I agree that the Bluto, image is a bit much. However, the peweter does give the Buc's, a distinct character as mentioned them being the only team out of 32 to utilize it! I am old fashioned even at age 26 so the kid in me yearns for the creamsicle day's of years past. I don't know the owners gripes about using it as an alternate but I can bet they wouldn't mind gaining some revenue off of replica jersey sales and such I mean take a look at the Mitchell & Ness throwback Steve Young and Doug Williams...it's just something about that d**n color! But to be honestly speaking at this point I'm glad they went the route they did but I would have voted for the long flag helmet in white if anything cause' you already have the Falcons, in black so that would be pretty dumb! I say let's be the only division ( I think...feel free to correct ) to have each team with a metallic shaded helmet. And yes Bruce, the pewter / red / pewter combo does look best as does also the white in that same order. Why white pants? I dunno'????

Speaking of unique colors, some of hte images it almost apears they were looking at some darker red or maroon options. A very underused color in pro sports. Lets see you have the old phillies....current Cavs (kinda)...Canton Bulldogs? I'm sure there are others but as much as you see bright red, you don't see Maroon too much.

1. No one else uses pewter, making it a totally unique color, which gives them instant logo recognition

2. If you look at at all of the logos, you can see why they chose the eventual winner - it combined all of the basic elements in a way that said what they needed - skull & crossbones, sabers, flag, etc.

3. I'd have to say that this is pretty impressive as a possible logo - don't know if the black helmet is best, but I like the logo: AltBucsLog4.jpg

Although, I think "TB" would have been better than just "B" :D

I have to agree that this is the best of the possible logos they had available. Also agree that the pirate ship on the sleeves does not work particularly well. It does turn into a blob at a distance. Then again, I'm not fond of the whole logo on the sleeves thing, anyway.

Avalanche, Coyotes, Thrashers (a little bit), Astros?, 49ers, Redskins.... There's not that many, but I don't really like the color.

And as far as the pewter argument, I love the way it looks, especially with the red shirt and pewter pants. I'd still like to see a black alternate shirt to go with pewter pants as well.

This is cool...

I kinda like the skull and the longer flag logo on the white alternate helmet better than the current logo. Who need an image of a football on a helmet? We all know it's a football helmet. The longer flag gives it a sort of 3-D look, like the new Vikings horn on the helmet. It'd look great on the pewter helmet.

Time for me to chime in on this here... (y'all knew it was coming!)

I myself never got to see any of the unifrom rebranding concepts except for one. It was a red jersey, with white numerals outlined in orange and black, the same as now, only in a different font (the one the old Buccaneers wordmark was written on), with that white helmet you saw first with the elongated flag and white pants to match. Funny part? That stripe was also on the pants. IF I can remember exactly how that looked (i'd have to look hard to see if I still ahve that sketch somewhere), I can try to conjure up a concept for your visual pleasure (or not)...

The pewter thing. Perfectly and exactly NO other major-level sports team used that color before the Bucs, so there's instant uniqueness right there. Yes, it is dark and dreary, but have you ever looked at the sky during a violent thunderstorm? What color is it? EXACTLY...and plus, with the Tampa Bay area being the thunderstorm/lightning strike capital of the world (which is also hwo the hockey team got its name for those who ain't know), it's a perfect tie-in. Plus, most older cannonballs are also that color (only darker). So what does a cannonball have to do with all this? PIRATE SHIPS! (Anyone who's been to RayJay during game day knows all about this..."FIRE THEM CANNONS"!)

The red? Short and simple...BLOOD. Aside from black, it's also the most intimidating color most people think of. It was also a part of their color scheme anyway. The team wanted to move away from the "losing image" (read:CREAMSICLE, much to my dismay in them days), get meaner, tougher, more agressive, and boy did they get THAT down! That red flag just really POPS out against that dark dreary pewter. Hell, every color on that pewter (black, orange, whatever) pops out against that neutral color. It's a sublte way to add flash.

To add to all that, I'll say this...short of the Ravens' failed try at it back in '96 with the black pants (at that time their home unis were black domes over purple shirts with the black pants with that wide-ass white stripe), no other NFL team, at least as a primary anyway, has a dark helmet/color jersey/dark color pants combo. The Jags do now with the black dome and pants when they choose to wear their unis that way, but right offhand I can think of no other NFL team that does that.

And, as if THAT weren't enough, recall that at the time my Bucs rolled out this new look, damn near every other team in the NFL, if now all of them, was white-shod. The BUCCANEERS, folks, were the ones responsible for bringing the black-shod look back into such widespead vogue. (Shod="shoe" for those who may be confused by that.)

Yeah I think maybe a modest refreshening may be in order...just so long as no funky Falcons/Vikings/Cardinals piping permeates the thread and fabric of my beloved Buccaneer uniform sets...or half-colored striping either.

OH...

And as for that pewter alternate I wish the NFL would let the Buccaneers go ahead and produce and sport...well...Photoshop Phantasies strikes again!!!

I'd assume the elongated flag was dropped by Mr. Glazer due to the hint of creamsicle orange in the folds of the flag.

Well, orange was included in the final choice.
