Brett Favre

How much money has been taken out of Aaron Rogers' pocket due to Favre's selfishness. Dude would likely have either already gotten an extension, or scored a big free agent contract this offseason if not for Favre's indecisiveness. If the Packers knew Favre would've been playing through 2008, they wouldn't have drafted Rogers, who would have been picked somewhere else and had his opportunity. Now, dude is going to be a free agent with zero resume behind him.

Forget about slapping, if I'm him, I stab Favre in the throat with a broken beer bottle. Management too, since they're as much to blame.

And if A-Rod 2.0 brings Pac Man Jones along, he could totally get away with it!

I could picture that scene - A-Rod 2.0 is stabbing dudes right and left, while Pac Man is making it rain in the background while also acting as Rodgers' hype-man.

That's what I need - a hype man.

I am not saying Brett went about this even remotely close to the right way, but what's so inherently selfish about wanting to continue his career? Aaron's getting shafted, for sure, but he doesn't owe anything to Aaron Rodgers. And who cares if the Packers would have known Favre would have continued playing? Yeah, all signs pointed to "no," but what does that have to do with anything? This is a logo forum, so let's say, for the sake of argument, you're a senior level designer. Your company hires a younger designer, right out of school, and after a few years, they think he can perform the job as well or better than you. Do you step aside because it's fair to the younger guy? No. You may like the other guy just fine, but you do what's best for you and your family.

Not to mention, Matt Schaub got a sweetheart deal and never really got the chance to show his stuff, and Rodgers was better thought of coming out of college. Rodgers will do just fine wherever he goes.

All fair points, but Favre did step aside - with a tear-filled press conference and everything. Taking into account all of your points (including the "he doesn't owe anything to Aaron Rogers - which is absolutely correct), if I'm Rodgers, I don't care. I finally got my shot, and the guy came back and took it away from me. In the past, they had to have plans in place for both situations - with and without Favre. This time, he made it official, and they only made one plan. They (at least they said so before they turned into little capitulating p*ssies) said they don't want him, but they'd be willing to trade him. For Favre not to accept a trade is selfish and unacceptable. If they release him, they set a precedent that anyone with a contract who is unhappy with their situation can just fake a retirement and get released. Plus, he has some value, so he's screwing the team twofold.

So...Brett retires and then wants to come back. Forget about all the other drama. That's the bottom line.

Michael Jordan

Magic Johnson

Reggie White

Lance Armstrong

Roger Clemens

George Foreman

Bob Cousy

All athletes that retired, only to come back. Big deal. This happens all the friggin' time. Besides the "they said, he said" crap, that's really all this is. Why is he so selfish?

It's tempting to just say hey, if you don't get it, no way I can explain it to you. But what the hell, I'm all for lost causes, so here goes...

Are any of those athletes quarterbacks? No. The only one close to being a comparison is Jordan, and I don't know or care enough about the NBA to say for sure whether that compares to Favre or not. Favre is the center of the Packer universe. If he's there or not there, the franchise's entire course and future plan changes PROFOUNDLY. The Packers have bent over backwards to accommodate him for the last several years. Their draft, free agent signings, EVERYTHING depended on whether he retired or not. They can't afford to sit around twiddling their thumbs until he makes up his mind at the beginning of training camp every damn year. Favre has got to realize that, and to realize just how many people he's jerking around, but does that stop him? Personally I think he gets off on all the attention and drama of the whole thing.

My dream outcome would be for them to release him or trade him somewhere and for him to come out and throw about 20 picks in the first 6 or 7 games.

You're not much for differing opinions, are you? I've seen you play the "if you don't get it, no way I can explain it to you" card several times before. Not so much conducive to creating a dialogue. And don't talk down to people like that.

Lance Armstrong and George Foreman don't belong on that list, as they're not team-sport athletes.

In the other cases -

Magic Johnson "retired" because of AIDS. There was no year-to-year "is he or isn't he?" thing. Reggie's contract was up, and he's a defensive player, so if he changed his mind, it's much easier to work him back in. MJ wasn't really wishy-washy about it either, but in his case, the team was built in a way that he could just slide back in. Unlike the Packers who had decided to "move on", the Bulls went on in a way that he could fit right back in. Again, despite his status as one of the top 2 or 3 players of all time, he still isn't as important as a QB.

Roger Clemens also isn't a good comparison, because 1. he was on one-year contracts, so he basically had all of the power over his own career, and 2. he's one of five starting pitchers. If he decides to come back, oh well - the #5 starter (who in most cases isn't a MLB-caliber player anyway) goes down to AAA.)

I don't know nothing 'bout no Bob Cousy.

Let's talk about another "cornerstone" athlete that pulled this. I'm not saying that there is not one, but I can't think of anyone who would make for a fair comparison here.

Was it you every time? If so, there might be a message there... B)

But seriously, are you saying you would have been more receptive to my response without that first part? OK, I regret "talking down" to you and withdraw it. Will you address my points now?

Watch Rodgers wear a Bears jersey after this season. :P

McCarthy was to meet with Favre, then the team and then finally with the media tonight about the QB plan. The press conference was canceled because the meeting with Favre is still going (2-1/2+ hours).

as a wisconsin native and partowner of the packers and season ticketholder, if i was GM i would try to get rodgers to sign a 2 year extension on his contract, since this is his last year of the 4 year deal. if that gets signed, you tell brett hes the starter, but this is the last year no matter what. if he comes back u trade him or cut him.

by the way the national media doesnt know the whole story. if we let brett play and we have the possiblyty of losing both next year and then were :censored: out of luck. i can totaly see both sides of the thing. im my heart i want brett back in my brian i want rodgers. its just getting very old and im sick of it

Another agreement from the meeting was that, despite reports to the contrary, there would not be an open quarterback competition as even Favre felt this would not be in the best interests of the locker room. Thus, Aaron Rodgers is the team's starting quarterback.

Translation

Favre: You mean I gotta WORK to get my job back? I ain't automatically startin?! OH. NO. TRADE. ME.

I'm really starting to think you're serious about that broken bottle thing. We might need to alert some crisis intervention agencies.
