GB television reports Thompson and team counsel met at Favre's house until 2:45PM. Apparently, trade talks with the Bucs have become serious.

My god, this could be a soap opera. So whos gunna be the one who goes into a coma?

Probably you cause it's looking like Brett might not be a Packer much longer, and that he quite possibly could be the starting QB for your Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Dear God, PLEASE break the wings off of Favre's plane mid flight if this happens :(

Oh man, I forgot about that.

Assuming a trade with the Bucs falls apart, if the Packers aren't releasing Favre, does that mean his unofficial trade deadline comes at the end of the preseason, when the teams have to get down to 53 players, or would the Packers place him on that 53-man roster, and essentially cut a guy that should be on their roster? Or is there some list they can place Brett on so they don't include him on their 53-man roster, like the PUP list?

I pretty much can't stand John Madden, especially when it comes to the raging boner he has for Favre, but I heard him make a good point today - the league should never have allowed the "personal services contract" (or whatever it was called) to go down, because it opens all kinds of doors. For example, if a team with unlimited funds is going into a season with a great shot at making it to the bowl, what's to stop them from just paying all of the top free-agents not to sign with their competitors? The money wouldn't count against the cap, right? I know it's extremely unlikely that something like this would ever happen, but you don't want the precedent to be set.

He would have to go on the 53-man roster. It's likely QB Matt Flynn would be placed on the practice squad until a trade were worked out. Now if Favre becomes a discipline problem, there might be something different for that.

These type of contracts happen often. The reason behind Favre's contract is certainly questionable. I'm sure this situation will be scrutinized after the season.

as a wisconsin native and partowner of the packers and season ticketholder, if i was GM i would try to get rodgers to sign a 2 year extension on his contract, since this is his last year of the 4 year deal. if that gets signed, you tell brett hes the starter, but this is the last year no matter what. if he comes back u trade him or cut him.

by the way the national media doesnt know the whole story. if we let brett play and we have the possiblyty of losing both next year and then were :censored: out of luck. i can totaly see both sides of the thing. im my heart i want brett back in my brian i want rodgers. its just getting very old and im sick of it

And if Im Aaron Rodgers I laugh hysterically in your face before flipping you the bird and walking off.

And after I laugh, I stab you in the throat with a broken bottle.

wow, god dam it you are cool. why wouldnt he take it. hes ganna get paid to sit on the bench and a guarenteed starting spot for at least 2 years. money talks unfortunatly in this day in age. but it might not even happen now if favre gets traded

Most players have a small window in which to enjoy a career. Rodgers potential is too high to linger on the bench that long. There's is no way he'd go for that deal. Never.

Actually, money can't talk, but it can spell, and use capital letters. Now then...

No competitive athlete wants to sit on the bench. Especially when that athlete could sign somewhere else and immediately start putting up stats that would get him a much larger contract by the time his time would come with the Packers. There's also the fact that he's in a spot where he can't trust anyone there, and would look like a complete bitch if they offered him another deal with those conditions and he capitulated.

Now that there's speculation that the Packers may not have backed off of their commitment to Rodgers, I may be ready to back off of them a bit, but as of right now, they (and Favre) all look bad.

Oh, and by the way - I am that damn cool. Thanks for noticing!

As a Packer shareholder (yeah, I know; if anything I'm a Browns fan, but when the chance to own part of any NFL franchise comes up, you take it), I've obviously followed this for a while now, and I can honestly say that if traded, in the final analysis the Packers are going to come out of this looking like geniuses while Favre will come out looking like a selfish prick.

The Packers handled this the best way they could under the circumstances - the guy retired, they moved forward. Then he decides to return, but at 38 (he's less than 24 hours older than I am) you can't build a long-term plan around him; plus they'd already started doing so around Rodgers. Yeah it was handled badly by the Packers, in much the same way the 49'ers screwed up with Joe Montana with their "designated starter" crap when Steve Young was moved up to the #1 slot on the depth chart, but in time those things will largely be forgotten.

Favre's behavior during all this, however, will not. He's been portrayed for the most part as a petulant, selfish player who decided to take a scorched Earth policy, testing the Packers to see just how far they'd be willing to go. And now, he's found out - they've placed him on their roster, and are obviously fully prepared to let his ass sit on the bench, honoring their contractual commitment to him at a cost of $12 million a season while at the same time honoring their commitment to Rodgers to keep him atop the depth chart in 2008.

Oddly enough I have a similar situation going on with my softball team right now - a guy who played with us for several years decided back in April he didn't want to play anymore. I replaced him with a 23-year old phenom who grew into his defensive position nicely and is a comparable hitter. Now come August, the veteran, now age 37, wants to return. He's welcome to do so, but he's also going to be either riding the pine or playing a different position.

If he's traded, it's a win-win for everyone involved and an end to this sorry episode. Otherwise, I personally think the Packers should just go ahead and keep him on their roster - even after the cutdowns. Favre has taken a scorced Earth policy with the Packers, so there's no reason they shouldn't do the same with him.

The issue with making Favre ride the pine is that it's not fair to Aaron Rodgers. First bad game he has will lead to a QB controversy the likes of which we've never seen before. That's a lot of pressure on a first time starter -- not only being the man that has to replace the man, but also having that very same man breathing down your back on the depth chart.

I think it just boils down to Favre wants to play in GB, but McCarthy and Thompson have to go. He lost this battle before it started.

Yeah, Favre's pretty much done in GB.

I just hope he goes down to Tampa and causes all sorts of bull :censored: down there. The Falcons might be able to sneak a win or two against those guys. ^_^

The 2008 Green Bay Packers season.

Or the 2008 Bucs season. Not sure at this point.
