Tampa Bay Buccaneers to wear orange throwbacks in 2009

I know its been mentioned before, but I find it real funny that so many people glorify the orange creamsicle jerseys as if they were such treasures now that they are long gone. When I was growing up I couldn't find any one of my friends, family, neighbors, or anyone else that I came across that didn't describe these uniforms as "horrible" and "a complete joke". Everyone said that they needed a huge overhaul.

I really like the overhaul, but we should all keep in mind the context.

Yes, people in the 1990s thought at the time that the Bucs' uniforms were terrible. On the other hand, I don't think we'll all look back on the 1990s as an era with particularly sharp fashion sense itself, so make of that what you will.

So I just read this on pewterreport.com and found it interesting.
Bucco Bruce is back! Bucaneers co-chairman Ed Glazer introduced the orange jerseys and throwback uniforms that the team will wear on November 8 in a home game against Green Bay. The Bucs are committed to wearing the throwbacks at least once per year over the next five years
.

So it looks like the throwbacks are here to stay.

Here's the article

Will the Glazer family even own the team, or even ManU, in the next five years?

Why not? They've owned the Bucs for over a decade already - any indication that they're looking to get out?

After the season ended, there was a huge uproar on the team's message board wanting them to sell the team. Mainly because we were all expecting them to immediately fire Jon Gruden. Obviously they did after about two weeks, but during that time period, a lot of people thought Gruden was staying and they took it as a sign that the Glazers cared a lot more about ManU than they did the Bucs. Plus, there were rumors about DeBartolo wanting to buy them.

Thats OK. On a mission to see if their is actually a difference in the color shade of oranges. From your photo taken with a flash from your camera, the jersey looks just the same shade as the ones from the 90s.

I got these pics from NFL Shop. Hope these help.

What they're using now

Warren Sapp throwback.

Thanks, but not really... I need someone who has a orange jersey from the 90s and has bought one of the new "1976 throwback versions" to photograh the two jerseys togather side by side or overlapping a little. It would not make good since to go out and buy a new jersey if the color of the new ones their selling are just like the ones from the 90s. The team stressed that they wanted to perfectly match the 1976 version so their is suppose to be a different in the shade of oranges.

Thats what I was thinking, so for an authentic someone would just be dishing out an extra 100$ for the weight basically.

Either that and/or the customization piece.

I have a Williams from that era, and the screenprint on mine (made by M&N, by the way) isn't all that different from the screenprint on most replicas--it's just a heavier application of the screenprint (so that no holes are visible). The jersey itself is a bit heavier, but, again, not by much.

So yeah...save the $100 and stick with a replica. Besides, the only people out in public who might notice the difference are those of us up in here. ;)

I have the Steve Young M&N, and the screenprint is quite heavy (no holes visible) and I also think it's quite a bit heavier than your average current NFL replica.

I also have a 1980s Ravens Knit Steve Young replica, and a white Creamsicle gamer from the 90s, but I don't think either of those are going to help those that want to color match.

Yeah but you have to realize that replicas back then... And still today really, have some pretty serious inaccuracies. Unless you we're able to get a game jersey from then and an authentic from now you couldn't really judge it properly.

Here's the article

Will the Glazer family even own the team, or even ManU, in the next five years?

Ownership has nothing to do with it. From the article:

===

The home game vs. the Packers won't be the only time the Bucs sport their throwback uniforms. Now that it has officially gone through the process and had it approved by the league, Tampa Bay is required by the NFL to wear its throwback uniforms at least one time over the next five years.

"Yes, the NFL says that if you elect to change your uniform or wear a throwback, you have to wear them for five years," said Glazer. "You can wear them up to two regular season games and one preseason game. This year we are going to wear them for one regular season game, and next we will probably wear them for two. We'll see, but they will be here for at least five years."

===

Thanks for posting that link btw, there were a number of interesting tidbits in it. For example:

===

The 1976 Bucs only wore their orange jerseys one time, which was for a preseason game.

===

And get this, their uni supplier in '76 was a sporting goods store and they finally found an original '76 jersey...on Craigslist!

===

The process took longer than the Glazers would have preferred, mostly because the Bucs ran into problems trying to match the exact color of the 1976 orange Bucs jerseys. "When the NFL sent us a box with the old orange jersey from the 1990s I realized this process wasn't going to be as easy as we originally thought," said Glazer.

Ownership's long search for an original 1976 orange Bucs jersey that was still in mint condition finally ended thanks to an advertisement the Glazers found on Craigslist, which was posted by the son of the original owner of Bay Sporting Goods, which supplied the Bucs with their jerseys and helmets in 1976.

===

Good stuff.

And I finally found a pic where Bucco's visible (the helmet logo, not our CCSLC boardmate B) ). In almost every other shot, the player is holding the helmet in a way that obscures the logo. Ruud even has one where the helmet is sideways to the camera but he has it tilted back so Bucco's not visible. Check out the link at the bottom of the article. It leads to a gallery of pics. Looks like Ruud even decided to grow a '70s mustache to go with the throwback look. :D

Despite their 'creamsicle' moniker, the color of those jerseys always make me think of those big marshmallow peanuts:

That's a shame. It will be neat to see the ugly orange uniforms once.

But, to continue to have to trot them out for 4 more years, when they mean nothing and are a sore spot with the history of the franchise? Lame.

Plus, it means (I think) that a black or pewter alt jersey (both of which would look REALLY good), won't be able to be added. That's too bad.

I actually agree with you. That's disappointing news. I was hoping this would be a one time thing that we'd remember, but seeing it twice a year for the next 4 years will diminish the special novelty of these uniforms.

Whenever I use the Bucs in Madden I like to put them in the never used black jerseys and it is a really attractive football uniform. They'd have to reserve them for later in the season or for night games due to players qualms about wearing black during hot day games, whether any of you buy into that is up to you.

The solution to one stupid rule is another: have a creamsicle-orange Buccaneers jersey drive drunk, and then Roger Goodell will suspend it for four years.

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

I most definitely buy the "black during a hot day" thing. It's awful.

I have to disagree with that. Just knowing that the creamisicles will keep the Bucs out of black or pewter jerseys for at least the next five years makes me like them a little more already.

I just got my throwback replica and I have to say, the orange is WAY lighter than any other Bucs throwback jersey I've ever seen. It reminds me a lot of U of Tennessee's bright orange, but with a shade more yellow.

Ehh...I think you mean a tab bit more magenta. ^_^

But yeah...as soon as I got mine, I went and matched it up right next to all my old Buccaneers stuff (the old stuff I have from them days and the M&N memorabilia)...and wouldn't you know, my M&N stuff is damn near an exact match with that jersey. Which tells me Reebok had a clue what they were doing.

(I can get past the razzle-dazzle fabric material, if only because the orange stands out THAT MUCH MORE in the sunlight.)

*Disclaimer: I am not an authoritative expert on stuff...I just do a lot of reading and research and keep in close connect with a bunch of people who are authoritative experts on stuff. 😁
