Mac the Knife
The Cleveland Browns have hired Eric Mangini as their new head coach, signing him to a four year contract. Sheesh.
LEWJ
Great.I was hoping for Shanny or Spagnuolo. But no.And is it me, or does Mangini chew tobacco? Or he chews an overly-excessive amount of gum. Every clip I see of him he's chompin' away at something.I personally, can't stand the guy.http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/article.php?id=9357 Oh, and is it about time for an NFL post-season thread? scottysprings
As a Jets fan, I dislike the decision to fire Mangini. There were a few questionable decisions he made down the stretch, but I don't think he deserved such a harsh punishment. The players' :censored:ty performance down the stretch was the reason the Jets missed the postseason.

He got a raw deal in NYC, and i'm glad to see him land on his feet.Yeah, why all the hate for the guy? It's not hatred, just frustration. The new Browns have operated over the past decade as the Arizona Cardinals/Detroit Lions eastern rivals in terms of making bad moves, particularly when it comes to management. Romeo Crennel (sp?) was a bust, as were those before him. Browns fans were hoping for Cowher, but when he exited the picture other names (Schottenheimer, Shanahan, and a few others) were hoped for, as they have proven track records of developing - and maintaining - winners. Though I hope he does well in Cleveland, Mangini doesn't fit that template.

After 9 years of watching the "new" Browns flounder I am exercising my option and filing for Fan Free Agency. I am acting as my own agent so here is what I am looking for.Let's start with the teams I won't play for...The Steelers: For obvious reasons. The Cowboys: Because they are already filled with front runner/bandwagon fans and "fashion" fans. The Patriots: Because I am not exactly fond of Boston sports teams. The Eagles: They already have enough problems. They don't need to add me to them. The Redskins: Somehow I don't think my native American relatives would appreciate me joining Redskin nation or whatever they call themselves...The Colts: It would look like a total front runner move. The Raiders: Maybe after Al Davis finally realizes he's been dead for 13 years but not now. Then there is the little matter of uniforms so these teams are out based on looks alone...Cincinnati, Atlanta, Denver, Arizona, Seattle (lose the monochromes at home and we can talk), Tennessee, and Minnesota.Buffalo gets an exemption. Despite the fact that they wear some of the most hideous gear in the history of sports, they have some of the best fans in all of sports and they were awfully kind to Browns fans for the three years we didn't have a team.Let the bidding begin... -ing Browns anyway... Though I hope he does well in Cleveland, Mangini doesn't fit that template.I think that the jury is still out on him as he was fired after three seasons, two of them winning. I do think that even thought Thomas Jones had a solid season that the Jets did not get the ball in the hands of Leon Washington enough. On the other hand, the Jets did made some terrible personnel moves aside from trading for Favre. Getting of John Abraham, Vilma, Mawae (his first season) hurt the team. The Browns are another story as it looks as they want to be Patriots West (Phase II). The interesting thing to me is that George Kokinis may be the GM since I have had to deal with him in a former career. But blowing that wildcard game at PIT really set the team back to where they are now and the QB shuffle that Butch Davis made did not assist any healing. For Lerner to redo a New England coach and Baltimore personnel guy seems the oddest part to me, even if both have connections to the "old" Browns. Didn't work before, why should it work now so close to an uncapped year?
See Red
I don't think Mangini's that good of a coach. With that schedule, I think the Jets underachieved. I mean, they got the AFC and NFC West, very easily the two worst divisions in football, so I'm not going to give him a pass for playing in a tough division. I'm not among those that was terribly impressed with either New England or Miami, as I think their records are a result of playing those two divisions as well. The Jets were a late TD against the Chiefs at home away from being swept by the AFC West. I'll give Mangini a bit of a pass because Brett Favre sucks, though. Not the best choice, in my opinion. Shmee
Let the bidding begin... -ing Browns anyway...While I am a loyal Giants fan and think your allegiance would be well placed with my favorite team, I get the impression that you don't want to risk being thought of as a bandwagon jumper. Now would not be a good reason to take up the Giants' cause, then. For that reason, I will avoid suggesting them.In addition, my entire college education is currently being paid for by University of South Carolina alumnus and Texas billionaire Bob McNair. You may recognize this gentleman's name, he is the owner of the Houston Texans. Let me begin my sale. The Texans are the league's newest team, the sharpest dressed (as long as they don't wear their blue monochromes), and one of the teams with the brightest future. Their logo is brilliant and their jerseys are awesome (and fit the more classical cut you seem to prefer). You won't be accused of being a bandwagon jumper and they have no rivalry with the Browns that could get in your way.Do the right thing. Go for the Texans![/end of sale] The world's foremost practitioners of professional tag-team wrestling.

Sport
Let the bidding begin... -ing Browns anyway...I'd go with the Panthers, They're my favorite NFC team. They have awesome uniforms, it appears that in the NFC south you're guaranteed a playoff appearance at least once every four years, they've actually been to a Super Bowl, and they have a competent owner with a good front office that is actually trying to win and they have a likeable QB. Plus, if you ever want to visit for a game the drive isn't unmanageable from Ohio and they still have very nice weather.

Those big threads make it so that it's not easy to tell if something has already been discussed (so you get some graveyarded topics) and there are multiple conversations going on at the same time, which adds to the confusion. There's no problem with a generao "offseason" thread, just to talk about teams improving or declining or whatever, but big moves deserve their own thread.I'm begging that we put a stop to those 100+ page cluttered threads.Thanks.
